Np on the lanosd thing, it was a pretty sad deal, I really liked glterm for instance. I don't know if he's changed his mind since.

I'm not a fan of the slide in/out transitions. However there are transition features within Growl now, where you can write your own. What I really want is a display creater, to create themes that you then just choose. So for instance you have a display that's green and on the top left and has a swipe transition, and uses the bubbles design, and has some preferences, you can have that. Basically a theme would be a set of preferences, and you could reuse the display styles over and over again. That's the kind of work that I think should be done, giving the user some more power, while not taking away the simplicity if you just want some simplicity.

You know you're welcome to send in patches right?

LanOSD died because the developer felt lied to by Apple about the whole ppc vs intel thing, so he pulled lanosd, glterm, and a few other apps. We had one other competitor at the time, I don't know if they are still around. Growl prospered by catering to Developers, which was part of the whole game plan.

I don't think it should be a pref if it's right, but I also think there are bigger issues. We've had quite a discussion about this recently on the Growl Discussion lists.

I agree, that usage can be a bit wonky, but for me it's pretty rare.

nevyn I agree that the time shouldn't be a preference; it should by default be much, much smaller. Don't remember who it was but someone tweeted, "find an animation interval that feels right. Use a quarter of that." or something similar. I get frustrated a lot with the long transition when I'm on a relatively small screen and there's an app that shows several growls in a row (colloquy when joining a server, e g). It's especially frustrating when a new animation pops into the newly freed slot and covers whatever it was you wanted to click under the growl, as I describe in the article. This is not just me and another 20% of the user base either — it's everybody at my office, and most of my friends who are pro Mac users, they've all installed my patched version.

It's a one line fix, not much of a patch :P I see @boredzo lowered the default in a beta, looking forward to that becoming the standard.

I always thought the slide-in/out/up animations LanOSD used were much much more elegant than the fade-into-free-slot Growl uses; for one thing, newest notification is always at the bottom. Are there any plans to do something like this in Growl, or at least something better than the current?

Thanks for the LanOSD history lesson, always wondered about that.
