Let that adventure develop gracefully.

Mircea Eliade (now no longer with us, but once the foremost scholar of Middle Asian Shamanism) - who wrote "Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy" called the Shaman a "psychopomp." The connections to Pentecost go on, don't they? ;-)

Thanks bro,
Phil

Re: Pentecost and the Way of the Shaman (1st Place Winner: Culture)

Dan,

Perhaps you should move into a yurt, and offer blessings spoken while beating a skin drum. That might help your friends break out of the rational. Okay, kidding aside - I feel as you do. These experiences do not happen often enough. May they increase and bring you both challenge and peace.

Phil

Re: Pentecost and the Way of the Shaman (1st Place Winner: Culture)

Mark,

If relating your deepest spirituality with a Buddhist friend is dabbling. Then like Paul with the first century Pagans - by all means dabble.

I identify with your difficult balance of being intellectual and being mystical. Radically be both!

Phil

Re: Pentecost and the Way of the Shaman (1st Place Winner: Culture)

Thanks David,

Sounds like you part of a Wiccan ritual. There are many pieces of the early developed Gardnerian and Alexandrian rituals, which have their source in the episcopi vagantes of the 19th century. It looks decidedly like a variation of mystical/liturgical Christianity at times.

Re: Pentecost and the Way of the Shaman (1st Place Winner: Culture)

Hey Brian,

Dang! There are times it is all show, and no go. Although the shaman is a psychopomp who typically pomps for the benefit of more than himself.

Re: Pentecost and the Way of the Shaman (1st Place Winner: Culture)

Hey Iggy Quill,

Driven!? Then something will happen which will cause someone (maybe me, maybe you, maybe another) to default to their safety positions, and get defensive. When that occurs all we can do is hold on to the ideal we hold in our hearts, and slowly work back toward it.

In heaven when we have a perfect balance we won't need the web, we can just transport places together.

Re: Pentecost and the Way of the Shaman (1st Place Winner: Culture)

You read the Wittenburg Door?! That is a pretty decent, but complex definition. Unfortunately, a complex definition is what you will get here.As you read it, do not think that I am saying Jesus is a Shaman, but remember that I am only saying that I think He appears to fulfill many of the roles of a Shaman, and in some way does it more perfectly than any Shamans who have since lived.

Re: Jesus as the Archetype Shaman

Oh Yeah!

Matt you are seriously on the track of missional thinking, which drives the direction of where this is all headed!

Re: Salem forum: Witches more popular, less scary

I want to apologize for some of those who say they are of my tribe - the Christians. What is our part in this political environment? What is God asking me (not the other) to be and do. Thanks for framing this in that manner.
