in Should Your Company Have a Social Media Policy? on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
I just wanted to remark that point 1 of 1. WHY have such a policy? wouldn't be considered legal in many different European countries where the privacy of the employee is protected by law...

In Belgium for instance you (as an employer) can only actively monitor my Internet access (as an employee) if you suspect me of breaking the law....

Also, it is worth collecting all social media guidelines in one place and this list is one of the first I discovered years ago: http://bit.ly/smpolicies

in 2008/12/29/brand-reputation-monitoring-tools/ on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
Hi Dan,

Thanks for the list - here are my thoughts:

1) You need to combine these technologies with humans who know how to use RSS, who understand social media and the impact these can have on their brands and business... Technology alone is not the answer here...

2) There are different ways to use these tools; are you a media relations person who "monitors media" ? Or are you a marketing professional who want to analyze online buzz about a product launch ?

3) I worked with Attentio (their CEO is Simon who commented above) for one major reason; they are based in Europe and understand the "monitoring challenges" of this market; multilingual, multicultural and different attitudes towards online information and social media.

4) At the end of the day, I am still missing Klipfolio (no Mac version and I just converted) - this was my favorite monitoring dashboard when I was a PR manager at IBM. But then again, you have to understand RSS and know what to monitor for and where to do it...

in The 22 Step Social Media Marketing Plan on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
Tools don't make the plan indeed... I see this on a regular basis; companies who jump on tactics & tools and then become totally frustrated because the tools do not deliver.

Like any other business planning, also social media marketing plans need to start from the business and communications objective. What is your issue, who do you need to reach, what change do you want to achieve etc... All crucial questions to ask BEFORE looking at tools and tactics.

Could very well be that social media are not at all part of the solution for your enterprise... Let's get back to basic planning, testing and implementation - where and if it makes sense - and stop the hype...

in The iPhone Ads are Incredible and Makes Me Want to Buy It on The Nokia Blog
I'll play around with it during my holiday in the US in a couple of weeks but one thing that I see as a big gap in the iPhone is GPRS support... It is almost never mentioned in reviews but here in Belgium (Europe) I do connect to the web with my N93 via GPRS and not WiFi or EDGE.
