I read it in college. I didn't particularly care for it, but could appreciate how his writing style and prose was so different than anything else being written at the time and how that, in turn, really influenced writers to come. It definitely is a snapshot of a certain time and a certain movement in history. It was worth reading for those reasons alone (even if it wasn't my cup of tea).

Thanks for the shout-out Mike. I started my blog to talk about the arts (literature, film, visual arts, music) and to find people that share the same interests and tastes. I try very hard to keep my blog from being about my day-to-day life, but every now and then it sneaks in.

Since I already feel like I have too many shows that I'm committed to, and the TV is slowly zapping away all my free time, I have resisted the urge to watch any of the new shows...

However, one night I caught an episode of "Bionic Woman". It was sooo cheesy with bad acting, bad dialog, it was just bad bad bad. Actually, the only good think about it was the music.

On another night, I caught an episode of "Life" and really enjoyed it. But I haven't been motivated to go back and figure out what night it is on and set the tivo up to record it.

So, in short...I don't have any "new" favorites, but my favorite show so far this season is Season 2 of "Dexter."

Yeah...I feel like maybe the show has "jumped the shark" by bringing Tony back from the dead AND making him evil. How are they going to explain those two things? Does he have an evil twin? Gimme a break.

Other than the Tony thing, though, I thought the trailer was good and it actually got me excited for the new season.

Shawn - you're right - I think I'm actually enjoying "Burn Notice" more than "24". A fight between Michael Weston and Jack Bauer would be AWESOME! And I agree - Weston would kick Jack's butt.

Mike - "Burn Notice" was a summer series, so it's already over but they're playing re-runs. It's on the USA channel. Not only is it a cool show but it's got Bruce Campbell! You can never go wrong with Bruce Campbell! Here's a link to the site.

This is an interesting idea...if only Shawn and I didn't love to collect books, mark them up, re-read them, etc. We have run out of bookshelves in our house! I think instead of having a new home built, we'll just use the books and stack them up as walls and build us a weird bookreader hovel. lol

And to show what a complete and total nerd I am...I have written in the margins and made notes in several Stephen King books (back in the day when I started to realize that even his "regular" horror novels were all connected to the Dark Tower world) and in my Dracula and Anne Rice books (being a vamp-lit connoiseur), but did not make any notes in the Harry Potter books.

Speaking of which - what do you think about Rowling's revelation that Dumbledor is gay? There have been some hilarious and thoughtful discussions/posts online about the issue.

Also - I would be curious to hear why you think Blockbuster is better than Netflix. And seeing the amount of comments here about it, it looks like you definitely need to write that post.

Scrubs is definitely a guilty pleasure. I think the reason it is so much fun is that they have no rules and do whatever crazy thing they want. You never know where one of J.D.'s crazy daydreams is going to take them.

I hope we find out that the Janior's name really is Jan Itor (as they showed in the one episode where he was at a children's school for career day and he introduces himself that way on the chalkboard.)

Mike - your favorite episode, the one with Brandon Fraser, is my favorite as well. It's called "My Screwup". The musical show was pretty funny too.

Yikes! I hope this isn't a death-sentence for Jin. At the time, the producers claimed that the character deaths that happened right after the actors' run-ins with the law was all just a coincidence and not a punishment or consequence, but if you ask me, that was a spin. I guess we will see...

Hmmm... decisions, decisions...How can I choose? I'm a BIG horror movie buff. (Just did a post on my blog of my top 13 vampire flicks.)

I just watched "The Descent" not that long ago myself and it was pretty scary.

Things that really push my fear buttons are ghosts and haunted houses (like "Poltergeist" or the "Others"), when people are possessed or go crazy (like the "Shinning") because you can't reason with them, and when the movie effectively plays on common human phobias, like fear of the dark, clausterphobia ("the Descent").

One movie that scared me so bad, it made me physically sick to my stomach and left a bad feeling that hung with me for hours afterwards, like I was going crazy myself, was the movie "Session 9". It's an independent film about a hazardous materials crew of 5 guys who are hired to remove asbestos from an abandoned old mental hospital. The movie is definitely a psychological thriller, but it's a slow burn that gains momentum and turns into an all-out horrorfest by the end. What also helps ramp up the fear factor (other than the awesome script and acting) is that it was actually filmed on location in the abandoned Danvers State Insane Asylum. You couldn't build sets this freaky...

Loved "Millennium" - created by Chris Carter of "X-files" fame. I think it ran for 2 or 3 seasons, so it wasn't like it didn't have a chance. What sucked is they cancelled it abruptly and without warning, before Chris Carter had a chance to answer all the mysteries. He ended up writing a cross-over episode on X-files to resolve the story for all the fans.

I also loved "John Doe" and "Touching Evil" and both those shows were cancelled after the first season. At least the main actors all went on to do more successful things. Dominic Purcell (John Doe) has gone on to do "Prison Break" and Jeffrey Donovan (Touching Evil) has gone on to do "Burn Notice" - both highly successful shows.

I was an X-files geek too. I dunno about them making another movie after so much time has passed... but if Chris Carter is on board, I have hope. I saw the first movie in the theater, and will probably be standing in line for this one too.

I watched all of the first season of "Rescue Me" and loved it. I watched about halfway thru the second season and then lost interest. Mostly because it turned into a soap opera (i.e. who's sleeping with who) and they got away from the firefighting stuff, and the ghosts of the fire victims that would follow Tommy around. That was the stuff I found interesting - the challenges of being a reluctant "hero", a tortured firefighter, etc. They had some interesting tortured, complex characters. It was a shame they got ridiculous with their plot lines. Have they returned back to some of that stuff?

It's so hard to pick a favorite Jim/Dwight prank - they are all so funny. And the JD/Turk duet "Guy Love" makes me laugh until I cry every time I watch it.

In some ways, the strike was kind of nice. I didn't feel like I was chained to the TV and I spent more time reading. Although, don't get me wrong, I certainly am glad it's over. And I'm back to being a most willing prisoner to the TV schedule now that LOST is back. :)

Last night's show was a rollercoaster ride! I think the Desmond-centric episodes are the best. Desmond and Penny's plot line rises above the rest. (Hey, that rhymes!) I can't remember the last time TV was this good! Awesome writing, five-star acting. Wow.

So...we learned why no one was allowed to talk to Minkowski - 'cause dude was in the process of losing his mind! And it was cool that we learned alot more about Daniel Faraday, the physicist. It makes sense that he's sympathetic to the losties, and Desmond in particular, if he has been dealing with the side-effects of time jumping too. It explains all his weird nervous-nelly type behavior over the last several episodes.

This is ridiculous. We don't use PPV hardly ever, so that won't really effect us, but for TV shows and regular aired movies/programs it will. What if you go on vacation for a week and want to watch all the shows you missed when you got back? Or, like the hubby and I, we are busy during the week so we save up alot of stuff on DVR to watch on the weekend when we have time. I guess they'd rather not have us watch it at all, then watch it on delay?!?! Surely there's a better solution to the production companies' "concerns" about ownership, usage and advertising in regards to their shows?!?!

The big cliffhanger for me will be the wait to see if Rousseau is dead or not. I've grown to like her over the progression of the show, so I hope she lives. I think she deserves a better death scene than that - she needs to go out fighting! Also - Ben is so cold and calculating enough, that I think it was a setup - him sending them to the Temple. I think he instructed the Others to fire on Alex's crazy mommy and her annoying boyfriend, if they ever saw them again. So, Ben got what he wanted - they are out of the picture and his adopted daughter is safe with his people and is somewhat under his control again. Possessive jerk!

I agree with Nicky - I almost want to start rooting for my favorites to lose, so they can get their own contract and not be controlled and manipulated by the machine that is American Idol. Like, maybe come in 3rd or 4th, to get all the good exposure, then bow out to go do their thing without being restricted creatively.

Yep. Gerard went to art school, graduated, worked for Nickelodeon for a year, then started the band. I absolutely LOVE the comics! As you said, the story and the superheroes are unlike any I've ever encountered.

Uh... if you are a Netflix user and you want to see a movie RIGHT NOW that hasn't been shipped to you - you go online to Netflix's site and stream it. You don't even have to change out of your bunny slippers to go get in the car and drive to the store.

Btw - I got a good chuckle from this discussion and how impatient all us media junkies are - that we are actually bickering over how fast we can get our entertainment into our eyeballs. Just stop and think about that for a minute. Pretty funny, huh?

Aww...Raven. I just now am getting caught up on my blog reading and came across this article. Sorry I wasn't here to support ya! You know I totally agree with your assessment of his movies. "Sixth Sense" is my least favorite one too - and that is coming from a professed horror/thriller/ghost fanatic!!! I don't understand the hatred and disappointment people have had towards his films. Maybe our modern world is too cynical and jaded to appreciate a good fairy tale anymore... Oh well... guess we'll have to take our M. Night Shyamalan love-fest elsewhere. ;)

Last book I read was "20th Century Ghosts" by Joe Hill - a collection of horror short stories. They were awesome. He is a horror author, but also writes a comic called "Locke & Key" with artist Gabriel Rodriguez, that I have yet to read. But it's on my list, along with his first novel "Heart-Shaped Box".

I too have taken advantage of Amazon's pre-order of the final Harry Potter book with their "release date delivery" guaranteed shipping. I can't believe the series is over. :(

The Harry Potter movies have probably been some of the most successful book-to-film adaptations. I'm not sure I want to fight the crowds this weekend to see the latest installment. Maybe next weekend...

I ordered my copy off Amazon, and spent a good part of Saturday impatiently pacing back and forth in front of the door, waiting for the UPS guy to deliver it. Talk about being a big kid! I think that's part of the fun of the Harry Potter books - it's like you get to recapture part of the magic of childhood.

Great minds think alike - those are the movies I'm looking forward to as well. Gotta love Westerns and JJ Abrams.

I read the novella "I Am Legend" by Richard Matheson several years ago (when I found out that Stephen King credited that story as being influential in inspiring him to become a writer). It's an amazing story. I highly recommend it - especially if you like horror.

Unfortunately, I think they've changed the story for the movie. The disease or infection they allude to in the trailer is actually vampirism in the book.

The story was made into a movie before, in the 70s with Charleton Heston called "Omega Man." It also changed the story and made it a nuclear holocaust with mutated radiation creatures chasing him.

And yeah...I'm a geek. To much useless trivia in my noggin'.

It's hard to pick just one...but I've read "Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens at least a dozen times or more. It's a classic. You've got an orphan boy trying to make his way into the upper class of London, along with intrigue, escaped prisoners and secret benefactors, a crazy manipulative old lady who still wears her wedding dress, and Estella... who is, hands-down, one of the most interesting female characters in literature.

Stephen King is also a favorite, and it's hard to pick just one of his books, but I would have to say "The Stand" or "'Salems Lot" are a couple of my favorites.

Definitely looking forward to The Office. We've been re-watching the last season on DVD in preparation for the new season.

Have you seen the new Dunder-Mifflin game? It's called DM Infinity. (http://www.dundermifflininfinity.com/) I applied and got accepted (as a Temp) at the Flagstaff branch. :P

I received a hilarious memo from Ryan via email, about how he's taking Dunder-Mifflin into the 21st century. (Thus the name change to DM Infinity.) Let the hilarity begin...

Favorite vacation in the States: Albuquerque Hot Air Balloon Festival, being on the field with balloons launching all around you, awesome Mexican food, day trip to Santa Fe, historic churches, Georgia O'Keefe museum, dinner at sunset at the top of the San Dias mountains.

Favorite vacation of all time: a quick European trip through London, Copenhagen, Sweden. Too many wonderful things to mention, however, the highlight of the trip was listening to a string quartet play a Mozart concerto by candlelight in the historic St. Martin-in-the-Fields cathedral.
