My wife and I were talking the other day about how prevalent infidelity is these days. It's EVERYWHERE! Our worship leader revealed to us a few months ago that he's been cheating on his wife. I just don't get it....

I definitely think the industry would be much more successful if there were real radio stations out there that played diverse tunes.

It's sort of like how MTV was cool for a couple years and now it's crap. They need to get back to their roots.

Interview w/ Obama yesterday by Relevant Magazine Editor Cameron Stange.

Strang: Your plan specifically prohibits discriminatory hiring policies based on religion. Do you think faith-based organizations that would want to join this program would bristle at the limitation that they can’t hire a staff that reflects their organization’s values?

Obama: I think it’s important to distinguish between people who are hired as part of a church to carry out that church’s mission or ministries, or administer the church. There’s always a religious exemption there from Title VII. It’s important for us to make sure that a Christian church can hire Christians or a Jewish church can hire people of the Jewish faith. That’s different from programs that are specifically funded by the federal government and offered to the public.

I’m going to have my Council on Faith-Based Partnerships review all our policies, review relevant law and regulations, executive orders and court cases. But the simple principle is that we should not discriminate against faith-based organizations in being able to carry out terrific programs [funded] by the federal government, but we want to make sure that those programs are run in a nondiscriminatory manner.

And that’s not going to encroach on the ability of those faith-based organizations to do what they need to do when it comes to their core religious mission. They are going to be able to hire and carry out those functions of a church, or synagogue, mosque or temple, but they can also participate in federal programs as long as those are done in a way that is not encroaching on a separation of church and state, is open to the public and is not involved in proselytizing.

Strang: Not being able to proselytize through a program that receives funding—how would that be enforced?

Obama: You know, the truth of the matter is, a lot of faith-based organizations currently are doing a great job on this issue, and they recognize that when they are administering federal funds, their priority has to be to provide high-quality services and they are not interested in discriminating or proselytizing. Obviously, there may be some who try to use these funds in inappropriate ways, but I think that’s the tiny minority of those who really just want to serve their communities and do the right thing.

At first I was disgusted. Then I realized that there was no way in the world it wouldn't evenutally hit the internet. (I'm actually surprised we haven't seen that Steve Irwin video yet).

I think the video actually helps people realize that this dude was a lunatic. The more people call him a loser and moron, the less likely someone will want to do the same. If they were saying stuff like he was a genius, then we might have some problems.

I don't know. That sure was a tough decision, but I'm sure it was market and publicity driven.

I had a similar experience waiting for my boy to arrive. He wasn't adopted, but my wife lost our first baby halfway through the pregnancy, and then she got pregnant a few months later. It felt like she was pregnant for years.

A very close friend of mine just told me that he had an affair. Actually, he was more than a friend, he was one of the two men in my life that shaped me to be the man I am today (the other being my father).

My first instinct was to go home and love on my wife and son. I vowed to never take them for granted again.

Actually I was thinking about this last night as I watched the NY Governor talk about his downfall. It just amazes me how rampant this is in our society.

I always credit Third Day, an atheist, and a Pearl Jam message board for my spiritual 'awakening'.

Your Offerings albums were hugely successful and could easily have been a formula for easy financial windfalls in later albums. How hard was it to move past that and do music you felt you were led to do vs. what the masses were wanting/expecting in the later albums?

First, congratulations on the recent news and godspeed on your journey brother! My wife and I are in the middle of training for adoption certification, and we look forward to a similar call in the near future!

Second, the second paragraph from your buddy is really where I'm at these days. We need to start looking for a new way to abolish abortions. I wonder if most people even know what would happen if Roe v. Wade were overturned. It would go to the states and then we'd still have legalized abortions in some states. This issue needs a real solution, not just another way to garner votes for either side.

We also need to start thinking in terms of "whole" life. Life begins at conception, but it doesn't end at birth. A recent quote from Rob Bell sums this line of thinking up nicely...

"The Church has missed the heart of God by speaking out against abortion while keeping silent about war. Both are forms of violence used to preserve prosperity. Abortion is prenatal war against the powerless child. War is postnatal abortion that destroys innocent life. The kingdom is life for the fetus and life for the civilian. The church embodies this life in a world of expedient and preemptive killing."

I too grew up in this mold, and I too am now enjoying the freedom of a church that gets it. For the most part now I dress down a little more than I normally would to 1) prove a point to those christians still stuck in 1945 and 2) to make the guests feel more comfortable.

This weekend on vacation we visited an old-school denomination that broke nearly every rule I hate about churches in one single service. Among them was a couple of old hens behind us complaining about how informal someone on stage looked.

Fumes.

I've been featuring a Relevant article on my blog that involves discussion by Colson and Claiborne. It's been interesting to see all the different sides to an issue.

As for your question, I'm still trying to wrap my head around all the different sides of "the church" right now. For too many years I've just been a christian with my head in the sand without really engaging my faith. More or less a time-card christian.

These days I've really been trying to search for truth wherever that leads me. And I'm finding it leads me away from a lot of what I thought truth was.

Fell asleep during Polar Express, and I'm not a big animated fan so the Star Wars didn't get a look (the storyline in the previews wasn't very captivating).

Good question.

I'm assuming you are referring to only paid staff though. We only have one paid staff at our church, but we don't have any policy in place either way.

I understand what your concerns are, but I'm not sure I'd want to be part of any policy in that regard. It's sort of akin to the Catholic church deciding what's proper and what's not in my opinion.

I can see "official" church blogs being under some sort of scrutiny in what they produce, but blogs of church officials should never be under the same limitations.

We can't help but be human and make mistakes, but if your leaders don't have discretion perhaps they shouldn't be leaders, right?

I've read all of the comments so far and love the discussion. I agree that a discussion about blogging is healthy for a church, but I'm almost positive I would have no part of any official policy on my personal blog. If I were staff I would probably consider resigning before I entered into a censorship agreement.

Blogs are simply a reflection of the person behind it. If we are "filtering" our blogs from the real person behind it, we are only faking it to the world. The world needs to know that Christians fail often but keep trying to get it right.

First, Amen to Jeff Miller.

Second, I think there is reason for discussion on this topic for the same reason kids need someone to talk to them about MySpace accounts. For some reason we all think these things are private or something. Sometimes we need reminders that these are public and permanent. You may delete something, but it's always out there in the cyberweb archives.

A reminder of that is a good thing.
