For the record, I wasn't referencing or discussing anything to do with my employer at all. 'The Movement' is a personal opinion and very personal thing for me - I'm in love with open source and see the cultural implications beyond the business models (which is what I wanted to steer the interviewer beyond - 'cause you and I both know that only a small handful of people are going to make money here, but, I believe, the impact of the tools will live on). I highly doubt my employer (Riya.com) would even approve of my musings in this instance. ;)

What is happening here is a mass struggle between two ideologies with, in my case anyway, the very same goals. History has proven that just the sheer desire to make money off an idea doesn't necessarily mean you will make money off an idea. However, more often than not, passion and the desire to innovate is rewarded. Ask Joshua Schachter if he expected his success (although I don't know how it's paid off yet). Ask Craig Newmark. Ask Stewart Butterfield and Caterina Fake. Sure, they all wanted to make money. Who doesn't? But the big success? It came from a vision. That's all I was saying.

Interesting...I guess when I was thinking about copyright, I was thinking about it in an RIAA way - copyrights being owned by big entities. What a blunder. I didn't stop to think about individual copyright. I totally agree that your data/work/etc. is yours and only yours. I'm a 'Creative Commons' girl - and I'm one of those people who say, "Come one, come all - take it and use it freely (although I don't think I give rights to use my work commercially)".

Hmmmm...it's like a double-edged sword, isn't it? I'm going to think on this one a bit. Thanks for your thoughtful post.

Don't tell me it's going to become fashionable to bash bloggers for being consumer advocates, now. Gee, have corporations become the underdogs in this 'Consumer Power' economy?

Gadget guy, it did sound lame. Then something really cool happened. Donna started going to bloggers individually and commenting to them. It was great. I had an entire conversation with her at my own blog.

Wow...I can safely say that neither Alex nor I intended to cause such a ruckus here. I, personally, didn't even think it would work.

I'm always happy to open up interesting debates.

And, for the record, I love Memeorandum and I think Gabe is brilliant. I believe the fact that he limits the blogs in the meme is a good way to keep out spammers. Perhaps an AttentionTrust.org x Memeorandum mashup would help?

From this point forward, however, I vow to behave and never to abuse my privileges again...trust me, I'm honored to be part of the meme.

Your trolls are really bitter, but you handle them well. Oh...I guess here is me leaving a comment. ;)

Jim was pretty great at handling my (after too many glasses of wine so I was feeling rogue-ish) questions. I still wish someone would at least support the fight, if not take it up with DRM. The fact that MS is actually engaging in that conversation is impressive to me.

and, of course, there is Wine Camp in Calaveras County (CA) May 26-28th a $60 event for geeks and non-profits to come together and solve non-profit issues with technology (as well as to help geeks 'give back' to the community)...with wine! and camping!

Then, of course, you'll want to check out (or run) a BarCamp in your area. We just got back from Bangalore, are attending Toronto in mid-May and look forward to San Francisco in June.
