in Planning Travel, Almost as Good as the Real Thing on Almost Fearless
Great post, as usual! I liked your example about the Art History course. That's one of my favorite things about visiting Europe a few years ago. It was right after I took an Art History class in college and then I visited the British Museum, the Louvre, and Rome (which is pretty much like an open-air museum anyway). I have so many dorky pictures of myself posing with various statues and frescoes and who-knows-what in the British Museum because I was so excited to see that stuff in person.

I do agree that over-planning can be a problem. But when it comes to dreaming and living vicariously (especially now that so many of us can't afford to travel), there's no such thing as too much. :)

in The Economy is Falling Apart, Should I Travel? on Almost Fearless
Great post Christine! I linked to it in my last blog post.

Unfortunately, I don't have any travel plans, but if I did, you bet I'd still go. If only to save money! You can live very comfortably in SE Asia, South America, and Central America on $25 a day. Here in the US, that doesn't even cover my rent and utilities.

in Waking Up on a Different Continent on Almost Fearless
I love your travel mad lib -- "Madrid was (adjective). I like the (favorite noun) and the (another noun). If you go there you should try (active verb that ends in -ing)." LOL! The irony is that sometimes this is all I can come up with myself, because those aspects of traveling that are most meaningful to me are most difficult to put into words. So thank you for putting your travels into words so skillfully! :)

in Traveling Safe, as a Woman on Almost Fearless
I've traveled solo quite a bit, and it's always good to be reminded of some basic safety tips. I also agree with what everyone has said--keeping your wits about you, as they say, is really the number one rule for me. Try not to look too much like a tourist, be aware of your surroundings, don't put yourself in situations that you feel unsure about. I stay in hostels a lot, so it's easy to meet people and tag along on a night out. It's nice to have some safety in numbers when exploring a strange city after dark.

in The Truth About Skype on Almost Fearless
Hi Christine -

I've been following your blog for a while and really enjoy it.

I thought I'd jump in here because I've used Skype and find this review really interesting. I think that when traveling, Skype can be a really useful tool. A lot of internet cafes have Skype installed on their computers and headsets available, so if you use it to call for free (computer to computer) it can be a real money-saver. That being said, I agree with you that I would never use Skype as my primary phone, or for important calls.

Keep up the great blogging!
