1. I'm a software engineer. Have been doing it for almost 20 years and am considered quite skilled by my peers. I *must* interrupt myself constantly or I go batty. It doesn't take me more than a moment to reacquire my train of thought.

2. I take it the authors of the study have never performed magic, danced, juggled, or played basketball/soccer/lacrosse/hockey/etc. Hell, you need to multitask to play most musical instruments, not to mention the added complexity of singing a melody line while playing rhythm.

3. I concur with @Josh G. One does need to have some level of experience and practice with the concurrent or context-switching tasks.

4. @Jim Hill, I agree that people drive quite poorly on their phones. But it's not because they're doing two things at once, as anyone who carries on a conversation with a passenger while driving is likewise performing the same two tasks. Studies have shown that while talking on the phone we try to picture ourselves in the scene with our interlocutor. It's not the talking and driving; it's the talking on the phone that takes us (partially) mentally away from where we are.

I defense of the foul black stuff, it's a *fantastic* source of umami. I'd never eaten or used it before a few months ago when I saw this recipe for turkey burgers. It's impressive how meaty it makes them.

Since then, I've taken to adding it to soups and other dishes where I want to increase the richness and meatiness.

You should see if you can find it in another library in your state. I don't know for sure, but your library can probably do an inter-library loan for you. At least the ones in CT used to do that when I was a wee lad.

A few weeks ago a shrill feminist was very angry that the line is "choosy moms choose Jif" and wanted to know why it couldn't be "choosy parents..." I pointed out that had poor meter. She didn't appreciate that.

Thanks. I'm not trying to shame anyone into reading, reading immediately, or even liking what I produce. People like what they like and that's fine with me. This is a more general complaint, exacerbated by being tired and having busted my ass last night...producing original content.

It's not just this chapter I'm talking about. I find it's true of all the writers' output at TMC, my drawings (not that they're great or anything,) and original poetry, stories, etc. from a variety of people. There's an oft-repeated sentiment that Tumblr is just a circlejerk of reblogs of cat pictures and the like...but for the most part that seems to be what people really want to see.

It takes me a lot less time to find an old picture of Lynda Carter and post it than it does to write or draw something. I do it because I'm compelled to do it but I get massively irritated when I later hear people - people who follow me - complain that there's no original material on Tumblr.

Sorry for venting.

That sucks. And is why I so frequently jump jobs, trying to get a breather from the soul-crushing reality of doing something I hate for a third of my waking life and having it encroach on my thoughts unbidden, unheralded, and unwanted in the other 2/3.

But the jump is temporary. There's the brief honeymoon of a new *place* but it's the same old thing.
