If it were up to me, I'd have quality forum software with dedicated topics for each storm. This would give us persistent, searchable resources and much better multimedia. It's crazy chasing storm conversations across multiple blog posts (though Disqus is good for just that -- article comments).

Re: Gordon Closing in on Mississippi-Alabama Coastline by Bob Henson | Category 6

I'm in historic Warrington. Sadly, a child has been killed not far from me after a tree fell on a mobile home. We've still got an active tornado warning near Milton. There's a recent report of another tree on a house on Jackson in Pensacola. About 11k without power in Escambia County so far. It's still blowing.

Re: Gulf Stories Moment August 6th

That Catherine is still there and a popular dive destination. As Dr. Bratten pointed out in the podcast, Mother Nature periodically covers and uncovers sections of the wreck, sometimes revealing things we haven't seen before. After one storm, we were graced with a display of beautiful copper sheathing which covered parts of the ship below the waterline. I was a little surprised to hear the ship's compass was salvaged before the ship broke up -- I was under the impression that the stern was first to disappear. But some years ago, I was diving just southeast the the hull when I noticed a glimmer in the sand. I fanned the area and found myself nose-to-nose with a sea monster. It was, in fact, a stylized sea creature that adorned a leg of the Catherine's compass binnacle, which had been hiding in the sand for a century. After some discussion topside, we covered it up again, took some measurements so that it could be relocated, and contacted the Park Service. They referred the matter to the Florida Department of Archaeology, who called in UWF's Department of Underwater Archaeology. Long story short: A few weeks later, we joined both agencies to document and raise the binnacle. It was conserved at UWF and is now on display in the archaeology museum. No -- the compass wasn't with the binnacle, so perhaps Dr. Bratten's recollection is correct. That's a younger version of me in the photo with Shelby Mitchell of 95-KSJ, who was with me on the discovery dive.
https://uploads.disquscdn.c...

Re: Buckle Up MAGA-Nerds, Alex Jones and Matt Gaetz Are Beefing

Challenge accepted: Obama *knew* Matt Gaetz looked “like a possum ate a pile of crap," but failed to do anything about it because his Deep State puppetmasters knew he'd eventually attack InfoWars from within. Totally agreed on that. I do, however, keep a couple urban-style bike helmets in the closet near where we shelter in weather emergencies. They look a bit like BMX helmets and are mostly solid. Plus they have cool skull and crossbone reflective stickers for some storm swagger. ;-)

Re: Irma Slams the Keys; Florida’s Southwest Coast at Risk of Major Storm Surge by Bob Henson | Category 6

Totally understand your point, but I think they're speaking to people who are already sheltering in place and might have things around the house that could help protect them. Plenty of room at last report. We're out of harm's way for now, and the Bay Center is a pretty pleasant place as refugee centers go. It's a short walk to downtown, with dining and things to do.
