Thanks Jared, that article really resonated with me. You may have inspired yet another post upcoming about what I put in the management category and what I consider creative. I'm not sure I'd consider my social network activity management... I'll have to percolate on that a bit.

That is so true. I'd dump it if I could but it is still the tool of choice for many of my friends and family who aren't as "online" as I am.

Exactly! I tend to be away 24/7 now on IM, which I don't like, but it means less interruption (usually) and less unexpected pj-clad Skype video calls ;)

Yes I know what it means. ;) I should have typed "CLEARLY opt out", thinking of the average, non-computer savvy user. Remember the See All @ Replies debacle? A highly useful, favorite feature that was also set to off and yet still caused a stir because that wasn't clear, and so we all lost a fantastic feature.

I 100% agree with you, Chris. Though I don't do auto follow, I manually approve each person as I get time. Often I will approve people so they can DM me only. I don't have a problem following my stream because I manage my stream using groups, clients, my mobile phone, columns, tools and a judicious application of my attention. By starting filtering techniques early in my social media use, it scales for me.

I get annoyed when people announce their following system or following changes, on various services. Social Media is by design an a la carte system. It's very individual. What works for me may not work for others, and that's ok. But announcing a mass unfollow, or blogging endlessly about the "reasons" behind every addition or subtraction to a stream often smacks of attention mongering to me. It's definitely in my social media "pet peeve" column, right next to "follower systems" that get people 19,500 followers and the like, auto DMs and invitations to stupid quizzes and apps... ;)

I disagree with Robert that a follow is an endorsement, but that's because for me it is a utility. For me, recommendations on Linked In and sitting on panels with people are endorsements. Sending out a note on Twitter, Facebook, etc that people should listen to someone on a topic is an endorsement. For me, endorsement requires a conscious act, not a passive follow.

To add to that, for what it is worth, any apology by a company can be considered an admission of fault. In this case where Apple is clearly not at fault (act of nature) and no one was injured why would they open themselves to a lawsuit where it was obvious there was none coming? I get appalled at how apple handles legit claims like MacBook Pro damage under Apple Care warranties, but this? Not ringing my outrage or innapropriate bells at all.

Seriously. I'm not sure what the people expected, and I don't mean that antagonistically at all. Also not sure what the size of the company has to do with acts of nature? I'm surprised the claims department even called back, but I guess the one thing Apple is always proactive with is law suits *grin*. I guess it wouldn't have even occurred to me to write a letter in the first place for something that was wind related, unless I was writing to suggest they change the store design according to region due to possible future incidents. Would a reply have been nice and gained them brownie points? Oh, sure, absolutely. Should it be required or expected? I don't think so. I guess I just don't see the cause for outrage in this case.

Interesting thing I've discovered about Qwitter, it is busting the spammers and marketers who follow to get the initial email sent to you then unfollow right after. I've gotten a few of those. It's a bit annoying, getting both emails, but it did amuse me a bit. I still think it is not a great service and can breed much negativity, but it seems it does have a use after all: busting the smarmy types out there. lol
