in Hearing tonight at Kirkland City Hall for ‘Kollin Nielsen Memorial Bridge’ proposal - Kirkland Reporter on Kirkland Reporter
Really? You would name a local Kirkland bridge after Gandhi? Of course you can always find somebody with greater name recognition, with greater contributions to mankind. But if we're talking about a local structure related to transportation, doesn't a local person, tied to an important transportation (and human) issue, make more sense?
I can't tell if you're serious or not.

Those are good questions. The real question is, what is the best sign that can be affixed to the bridge? Not, what is a "good" sign, or a "good enough" sign, or "the first" sign that is brought forward by 10 or 20 people. And just as I testified in the hearing, Kirkland should apply some methodology, some objective criteria, to its naming decisions. I did not hear one single commissioner state any decision criteria, for this collossal act of taking the attention of millions of drivers without their consent or giving of payment or consideration. The sign "Kollin Nielsen Bridge" is not a bad name. It has greater than zero social benefit. But everybody in the crowd as well as the commission avoided the question of WHY this sign should be affixed-- what is the benefit to society? Making matters worse, two of the commissioners said that the proposal meets the criteria of the state! The state does not impose criteria-- its methodology is to accept the recommendation of the City, as long as basic guidelines are met. To me this is being driven by emotion. It is an assault on reason. It's the culture wars thing. --we just think differently.

Once you accept a gift like this (and if you don’t have to return it then it is most certainly a gift) you have officially defined yourself as a whore. Just like the bloggers who took money from politicians, or the ones who accepted free trips to Amsterdam. You’ve hung out a sign that says, “I’m for sale.”
That’s your choice. But pretty soon nobody can be sure if you’re espousing a point of view because you truly believe it or because somebody paid you to believe it. And if you think you can accept payola without it affecting your independence, you’re extremely naive.
Oh, and you forfeit all rights to speak credibly about the biases of the mainstream media.
