McCain wins, strokes out and Palin is president.
What will you do? Would you seriously consider emigrating to another country?
Should we starting saving now for a quick escape?

I had jokingly noted Canada but saw on Slate how they are going through their own sort of tumultous campaign with another right leaning candidate. So, its Obama/Biden or bust!

Democrats must learn some respect
by Clive Crook
This article is not the first to note the cultural contradiction in American liberalism, but just now the point bears restating. The election may turn on it.
Democrats speak up for the less prosperous; they have well-intentioned policies to help them; they are disturbed by inequality, and want to do something about it. Their concern is real and admirable. The trouble is, they lack respect for the objects of their solicitude. Their sympathy comes mixed with disdain, and even contempt.
Democrats regard their policies as self-evidently in the interests of the US working and middle classes. Yet those wide segments of US society keep helping to elect Republican presidents. How is one to account for this? Are those people idiots? Frankly, yes - or so many liberals are driven to conclude. Either that or bigots, clinging to guns, God and white supremacy; or else pathetic dupes, ever at the disposal of Republican strategists. If they only had the brains to vote in their interests, Democrats think, the party would never be out of power. But again and again, the Republicans tell their lies, and those stupid damned voters buy it.
It is an attitude that a good part of the US media share. The country has conservative media (Fox News, talk radio) as well as liberal media (most of the rest). Curiously, whereas the conservative media know they are conservative, much of the liberal media believe themselves to be neutral.

GOOD QUESTION
From TPM Reader WS:
Here in Wisconsin, one of the heads of the "Palin Truth Squad", former Lt. Gov. Margaret Farrow is giving interviews, outraged over the lipstick comment. The state GOP has called a 1:30 press conference where a group of GOP women will rip into Obama for all of the assembled TV cameras.
My question... where the hell are the Democrats on this? Not just here, but nationally, they are letting Obama get bloodied over this. Where is Biden? Is he turning into this cycle's Edwards? Where are Pelosi and Boxer and Sebelius today?
The campaign needs to stop forcing Obama to take on the entire right-wing... His organization in every state should have high-profile surrogates out there today ripping into McCain and Palin, not just on the lipstick, but on the the sex ed ad and the judge's order for Palin to stay out of the divorce.
Where are these people?

With all the great publicity your blog is receiving, do you really want to be associated with the vilest aspects of our political culture?
Just like you've said Hillary supporters like myself should heed the mandate of our candidate and support Obama, shouldn't you heed the call of your nominee and leave this Palin family matter alone?

Monica, why are your still supporting Hillary Clinton? What office is she running for? Last time I checked she is still the senator of my state --New York. She has not announced that she is running for to any us New Yorkers.
In the primary I voted for Kucinich. He did not win. Guess what? I don't support him anymore because he is no longer running for President. I SUPPORTED Kucinich, but I no longer SUPPORT him.
But if you still support Hillary Clinton than why don't you become an OBAMA SUPPORTER and identify yourself as such, she does

Monica, what I'd like to know is are you going on all the BLOGS talking about this subject, or just JJP?
You effectively disqualified yourself to be a concern troll by mentioning you're a Hillary supporter and after all the strife and dissention she caused because she couldn't get her own way during the primaries or during the convention, do you honestly think you should be going on this blog trying to control the discussion?
Don't worry, I'll wait for your answer.

No, Because this isn't a question about Obama or the daughter. Rather John McCain's judgement. McCain has centered his whole campaign on the issue's of judgement , experience and readiness to lead. Is Palin ready with one DS baby and a daughter that's pregnant? So it's perfectly legitimate to question McCain's competence when he selects someone that doesn't meet his own standards.

Obama has to say what he does. I get that. The quadruple standard for him is obvious.
This woman is a Trojan Horse.
It wasn't us. It was THEM. They presented her to the USA as this Mother of the Year. Go back and watch all the defenders of her. She's on a higher moral plain because she gave birth to a Down's Syndrome child. Oh, this is why America will love her.

Maybe it's me but what I take from this interview is that she was interested in the national stage. I think she said it was an "impossibility" because she had only recently entered the national stage.
I guess given the opportunity she decided to take advantage of it.

Question:
If you weren't going to vote for McCain anyway, why do you care that Palin is his choice? Why even waste time and energy thinking about her? Why be insulted?
Or do you think there is some political value in him running with this wife, mother, and governor?
She actually has a child going to Iraq and he is a veteran who was a POW, how can you not look like a jerk to uncommitted voters when confronting them on Iraq and Afghanistan.
She was the mayor of a small town, not unlike the towns whose residents were offended by Obama's comments.
As a working mom, with 3 kids in school and a newborn, she more in common with typical American women (regardless of color) than most politicians in DC. If you are saying that she can't be VP, are you suggesting that similarly situated women shouldn't be in executive roles. Are you suggesting that women should be menopausal or asexual in order to seriously considered for leadership roles?
I dare you to say yes.

She's an impressive woman in many rights and may well be a great mother, but that does not qualify her for national office. Joe Biden also has a son who is headed off to Iraq, not that I think that should be some kind of litmus test for running for office. I have no intention of voting for McCain but he is clearly going after disaffected female voters with this choice and it shows him for being the clear political opportuist that he's accused Obama of being. There were other female Republicans who were better qualified to be VP but some reason he picked a 44-year old former beauty queen and self described "Hockey Mom." Something in the milk is not clean. lol ( forgive me JJP folks for that Khaia reference - I couldn't help it.)

Wait what? Is this the game we are playing now? For voters who are not leaning towards McCain we can't question his decisionmaking and judgment? How does that even make sense? This is an election. No one knows what is going to happen. Having a debate about these issues is what politics is all about.
And sorry, If I understand your argument, the fact that she has a son that is going to Iraq and McCain is a POW from Vietnam is a shield for criticizing the both of them on Iraq and Afghanistan?!? Are you freakin' kidding me?!? We are at WAR. My friend is over there. People are dying. We are pumping billions of tax dollars into both countries each month. That argument makes absolutely no sense, and anybody who subscribes to it should stay at home on election day. Based on your own logic neither McCain or Palin can challenge Biden on Iraq/Afghanistan since his son is headed to Iraq in October, and he served in Vietnam as well.
In general, I do think it has some political value for McCain, but for some at least, it also makes him look desperate and phony.

So, according to you, we shouldn't question the choice of a woman who could end up running this country that WE live in?
As the Vice President of the United States, there's the possibility that you may have to take over as the President should the need arise, and that is a position that has a profound affect on my life and the lives of the ones I love, so ya damn right I'm gonna question Palin and ANY person that wants the V.P. spot. PERIOD.
Furthermore, no she doesn't have more in common with the typical American woman. The typical American woman isn't a Governor of a state.

I'm only a voter and I can only speak for myself. I was underwhelmed by Obama's speech.
I wasn't interested in hearing MLK's children speak. While the the tribute John Lewis was nice that wasn't the history making moment.
Obama's nomination was.
I expected more and the moment called for more.
I wanted a speech for the ages, something that will be as relevant one hundred years from now as it is now. I needed a speech that tied the struggles of people of color in this country to the larger American story. Why not mention MLK by name or A. Philip Randolph or any of the organizers of the March on Washington? Were they not great Americans whose progressive ideas are as important today as they were forty-five years ago. Why not, for example, salute the countless African American, Latino, Asian American and Native American servicemen who served this country abroad even though they were disenfranchised at home? They did that so one day a Barack Obama could stand in front of 80,000 fans and claim his nomination.
Obama had the perfect opportunity to deliver this century's Gettyburg's address instead we were subjected to 38 minutes of rehashed soundbites, talking points and slogans.
And what purpose? To win over white voters? I don't doubt that this "whitewashed" speech (Dr. Julianne Malveux's term, not mine) will calm the nerves of undecided voters. It may even help him win the election, but at what cost?
If he does win, I pray that he will acknowledge the struggles endured by brown folk who put him in the Oval Office. Maybe in his inauguration address he'll call a few by name.
I won't hold my breath.

I think I must be the only one put off by the fact that on the 45th anniversary of the March on Washington, he made only a cursory mention of the historical context. Did he even mention MLK by name?
Another thing, he spoke eloquently about the credit crunch and economic problems the country faces now. I guess we are supposed to forget that Biden voted for the bankruptcy bill made made it difficult for many of us to make a new start after set backs.

Did you not see Bernice and MLK III speaking? Did you miss the video? Did you miss Rep. John Lewis? Did you miss the last paragraph of Obama's speech? Exactly what did you want him to do in his acceptance speech for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States of America?? Yeah..you ARE the only one put off.
No, you shouldn't foget that Biden voted fro the bankruptcy bill, but you do need to remember that Joe Biden is the senior Senator from DELAWARE.

I understand your point, but I think it was intentional. They had already given a presentation about MLK and had his son speak, which I thought was appropriate. But, even though he didn't mention his name, I thought the last part of the speech, when he invoked MLK, was the most powerful and effective. He has to tread a fine line with invoking, probably the most quoted, revered speeches in history--as well as the comparison to a great leader, to where we are today. I think that in the past, others have overplayed the MLK card and it cheapened his legacy. To me, the themes of MLK's speech were playing out in that stadium with the diversity of the crowd and the historical signficance of the moment.
As far as Joe Biden, I don't know the history of the bankruptcy bill, so I won't speak on it, but what I do know is that no matter who would be in his position, I could probably pick out a position or a policy that I wouldn't agree with. I don't think there will be a perfect VP candidate.

I thought it was good in that he didn't attempt to infringe on MLK;s legacy; plus the rethugs would be quick to say he had no right to claim MLK's dream (due to his background).

When in doubt, go with the middle-aged white guy.
If Biden is so great, why hasn't ever made an impact as a nominee; he's run at least 3 times.
I guess it's true, book sense can't take the place of old fashion common sense. With Richardson, Sebrus, or Billary, he could rest assured about some safety issues and could complete his agenda if elected.

With Biden, Obama has someone everyone already knows. Most importantly, he has someone who fleshes out the "foreign policy" side of the coin. No one else who was a contender had any sort of foreign policy credentials. He's also well beyond "middle aged"-- he's 66.
To your second point, Biden was a strong candidate in the 80's until the plagiarism flap.
I'm not sure I understand your last thought.

I think it's better to vote for McKinney or stay at home.
I think of how I wasted my vote on Kerry and Gore, I get mad at myself. They were the "best" candidates. Two men would would keep a Republican out of the White House. I voted for both men because I thought they had the experience and intelligence to lead this country. They had those qualities in spades, what they didn't have was balls. They wouldn't get down dirty and fight for the voters who believed in them.
Now I know not to waste by vote on someone who has the best chance of winning. Do we have the same values. Will he stand down when the Republicans kick him in the balls (and they will. This Fisher Price stuff is going to end after the convention).

If it's "Christian" for me to call someone out on their hypocracy, so be it.
I'm getting real tired of those who probably never set foot in a house of worship trying to judge me. "Non of Your..." that's You, Anonymous, trying to come here and wax poetic about Stephanie Tubbs-Jones.
None of us would dispute what she did before she decided to back Hillary Clinton, and no one blames her for supporting Hillary, but she didn't have to tear down Obama in the process, and that's what she'll be most remembered for.
I didn't forget that she objected to the electoral votes in the 2004 election; she was the only CBC member that did so, along with getting Senator Barbara Boxer to sign off on it. For the most part, she was a progressive member of the CBC - unlike many of the other sell-outs. I research this group and publish analysis of their legislative behavior, so I know of what I speak.
As I said, from your POV, we shouldn't be able to disagree with what Ms. Tubbs-Jones stood for and yet pay our respects, but again, from my POV, and as a Christian, that makes YOU a DIPSHYT. PERIOD.

DnA,
Critical? That's an understatement. That woman was called everything from mammy to handkerchief head to Auntie by the authors (shout out to rikyrah) and commenters on this site. For what? Having the nerve and balls to stay for someone she believed in. Someone she felt loyalty forwards.
It's shocking when anyone who's an elected official today doesn't follow polls but actually leads. Someone who didn't cower away when pressure from all sides was bearing down on her. Someone who didn't wait until the primary was over to pick a candidate.
We lost one hell of a woman today.
Think about that kind of grit and that backbone of steel when your boy flip flops on another progressive issue or gives another Booker T. Washington Father's Day speech.

No one knows her true motivation for supporting the Clinton's against the wishes of an entire constituency. It doesn't make sense for an elected official to jeopardize her entire career....nobody means the much, except family.

It seems that the same reverence you express for Stephanie standing up and doing what's right for her doesn't extend to Obama. Somehow her actions are principled, yet Obama saying what many blacks say privately (and know to be true) makes him Booker T. which is another way of calling him an Uncle Tom. Perhaps you should allow Obama to have the same freedom as any other candidate to choose his positions without having the crabs come out and talk about flip flopping. Lastly, the anger that some felt toward Jones and some others in the CBC is because they have stood on the backs of their black constituents for years to achieve their success, by relying in part on racial pride and unity, yet when the first viable black candidate for President shows up, not only do they not support him, but many went on any show or network to disrespect that man. She had the right to support whoever she wanted and everyone else had the right to make a judgment about her decision and her motives.
