in Heartless hikers fail to help injured man on The Colorado Independent
Seems like the apathy of the city streets has spilled over to wilderness trails. The next question is whether it was a beetle-kill tree.

in Threat of terror attack debated in Beaver Creek on The Colorado Independent
Thanks for clarifying, Suzanne. Clearly the World Forum is a known quantity, especially in the wake of a Denver man's arrest a couple of years ago at the resort for criticizing Cheney on the Iraq War -- a case that's still being litigated after he sued Cheney's security detail.

More recently, the Dillon Dam Road closure in nearby Summit County due to an undisclosed threat shows the state's resort areas are on somebody's radar. Thinking we're immune to big-city-style mayhem would be unwise, especially resort towns right off of I-70. After all, Ted Bundy admitted to killing a Vail nurse nearly 30 years ago. Her body has never been found.

Great point. The Vail Daily wrote about that very issue in today's edition.

in Vail area real estate sales suffer second-worst month in 12 years on The Colorado Independent
What's interesting about this story is a Vail Valley real estate agent breaking ranks from the rest of the relentless cheerleaders and calling for a dose of reality. Irrational exuberance can lead to costly mistakes in a market that is finally feeling the crunch the rest of the nation has been dealing with for more than a year.

As for other economic indicators, tourism seems to be holding steady despite rising gas prices -- partly because of the huge influx of foreign visitors taking advantage of the weak dollar.

The up-start Vail Mountaineer newspaper, taking on the Vail Daily for a little more than two weeks now, reported in its weekend edition that Vail retail sales for May were up 13 percent over the same month last year.

in Feds, ski resorts finally facing reality of beetle outbreak on The Colorado Independent
All very good questions. While the ski/tourism industry is the second biggest moneymaker in the state behind only agriculture, the ski corporations enjoy sweetheart lease deals on federal lands that allow them to turn big profits every year -- particularly the ones like Vail Resorts that have diversified into real estate, lodging and retail.

The Forest Service has a strange relationship with the ski industry. On the one hand the feds are charged with preserving and protecting the national forests, but at the same time they are directed to promote as much recreational access to the public lands as possible. Skiing accomplishes that goal better than perhaps any other sport.

The feds are likely more concerned about ski towns because more population and property is centered around ski areas than other parts of the forest, so concentrating resources in and around the most dense population and recreation centers makes sense.

As far as putting an equitable amount of resources toward less populated and economically critical areas of the forest, I'll put that question to Forest Service officials when I meet again with them next week.

And while Vail Resorts is a little more difficult to pin down on their beetle-kill mitigation efforts, they tell me they've spent "millions" since 2000 and will continue to do so. They were unable to meet with me for this story but said they will answer more of my questions next week, at which point perhaps they'll have a better breakdown of what they're spending compared to the feds.
