in Identifying your passions for success on Tom Markiewicz
I remember hearing about a study done by some prestigious MBA program. They asked 1,000 or so young people if they were interested in following their passions or making money. After 10 or so years, they went back and talked to the same people... and found that the group that chased passion (and not wealth) had two-fold (or more) the number of millionaires. They were also the most satisfied with their work and careers. Gotta love what you do. Gotta.

in Better emailing on Tom Markiewicz
I keep an "unread" smart folder... very similar to the zero messages approach, then flag or mark "unread" the stuff that requires follow-up. If you drop out of my unread and aren't flagged, your email is in the "river" of incoming messages and floats on! Float on, email, float on.

There's some cheese whiz here... but.... it's necessary for entrepreneurship AND for being happy with life. It's Maslow, baby! I'd put finding your passion in life (actualization) as the highest level of self-fulfillment and understanding one can achieve. I wish I'd realized it WAY earlier in life, in fact. So, find that one thing that defines your core, and you will also find happiness and something that defines you. And it will center and ground you in bad times. It' will carry you and motivate others, too.

in Top 10 Blogging Neighborhoods in the U.S. on Connecting People
Very fine look at blogging and it's relationship to activism, gentrification and "emerging" neighborhoods (a.k.a. moving into the city versus the 'burbs). It'll be interesting to see what these neighborhoods look like in 5 years (and the blogs). Great entry!

Wonder what it would take to make a grand experiment in SWVA and embrace a startup culture? Maybe take an old town like, say Pulaski or Roanoke or downtown Christiansburg, and use all that idle commercial space and just let a bunch of startups come in and change the world. Tax incentives, low-rent commercial space, and community.... just see what happens. Why try to land the big manufacturer? Why are plants so important to our economic development strategies?
Come on econ deve folks... pony up to the startup bar and pull the trigger. People WANT to come home!

I'd encourage the "professionals" to hire a professional web developer to help with their site. Whew.
