I discovered that at least with Verizon you can leave messages directly on people's voicemails without involving any other companies. There is an option in my voicemail menu to "send a message" in which you can simply type in the phone number you want to leave a message for, and it is sent directly to their voicemail. The only downside of this is that you have to know the phone number or have it written down, which isn't too common these days with cell phones being our reliable portable address/phone books. Just another option for avoiding the conversation...
