I'm not sure why you'd assume that techmeme would be bigger than techcrunch. it has nothing to do with curated links vs. regular blog. techcrunch isn't just a standard blog. they consistently break tech industry news more often than WSJ, NYT, FT put together. and although they do their own reporting, the large number of comments each post has usually offers some real insight - a lot of humor. if you work in tech, especially silicon valley, reading techcrunch isn't an option even if you hate arrington. which half of his audience probably does.

A very interesting start up is "Start Up Weekend," which is a bar-campish weekend meeting that travels across the US & Canada. The point is to create a start up at each camp and the people attending the Fri-Sun intense weekend are the ones working on the start up they collectively decide to create. Each person gets a stake in the company, but the creator of Start Up Weekend apparently gets the lions share.
This isn't my event, but I have a friend in NYC that went to the NYC Start Up Weekend and said it was well worth it. I'm going to the SF one based on that feedback. Even if you don't particularly like the company the group decides to start up, you'll likely meet some people that you'll work with in the future.

I totally can appreciate where Nick is coming from, but I think there is another point being missed. He is a CEO talking to the New York Times, it is his job to make his company look like they are worth a ton.
But to that point, top apps like his are making a decent amount of money from advertising. Into the high 10Ks a month - so far. Doesn't seem like much now, but scale that app to across APIs as they open up, cross promote that app with other apps (and vise versa) and add other ways of monetizing, and he could be right. If it were my app, I wouldn't sell it now for 10MM either - because I wouldn't sell just one app, I'd sell my company for over $100MM or even more down the road. Timing is everything :)
