in No more Internet Explorer 6 support. on the martini shaker*
I think the implementation depends on the percentage of your traffic that uses IE6. What do your stats have to say?

37signals had an interesting approach for Basecamp: http://37signals.blogs.com/products/2008/07/bas...

3rdmartini My stats say that out of 42% of my overall Internet Explorer users, about 10% use IE6. That's enough to convince me.

in Growing career opportunities in the field of social media? on the martini shaker*
I read Seth's post as well and I have to agree with him. I think there are great opportunities for people that are already active online, especially new college grads for a couple reasons.

1) right out of school, they have been involved with MySpace, text messaging and the like for several years, so they would be up to speed on the communities already (but need a lesson in PR, legal, and transparency I'm sure to stay out of hot water)

2) it would probably be an additional responsibility as part of another job like marketing assistant and it would probably be grown into a full time job as the need arises

I don't think it can be forced and I think it would be hard to convert someone that wasn't already active online with blogs and other social networks.

I have always been active online, but only started actively blogging within the last year.

I think a person would be challenged to be a community organizer full time because you would start to drift away from the business world and what clients really want. I think there has to be a balance there. For most of us out there, most of the time I put into the communities is on my own dime.

in Ready to rock your face off on the martini shaker*
When I first heard about Guitar Hero I thought it was going to be lame... until I played it.

But when my brother-in-law got it for his PS2 and I gave it a whirl, I had a blast. It was simple to learn and fun to play.

The clickity clack of the keys is a bit annoying, but something I'm sure they'll address in the next version.

Rock on, I say, as air guitar players unite in number.

Congrats! There is definitely something in the water...

I made a lame attempt at starting a site for new dads and dads to be using Ning (http://www.disfordaddy.com/) where I was going to post stuff.

But, I got busy with other things and it hasn't gotten off the ground. It sounded like a good idea at the time, though. October 16 (our due date) will be here before I get to post #2. =)

For a good chuckle, check out some of the prego shirts at cafe press: http://www.cafepress.com/buy/maternity

I had an idea for one, but, unfortunately, something similar was already out there.

in “Camping out” for a Wii in May on the martini shaker*
There are tons of conspiracy theories in regards to the shortage of Wiis. I'm sure there is truth in there somewhere with a combination of throttling production to keep supply low and also a real shortage. After all, you don't have to put it on sale if you can't keep them on the shelf.

I think the $300 price target is within reach of casual gamers. The more expensive $600 PS3 seems too high, but I understand the price point with all of the features like blu-ray and the quality of the video. Of course, having to foot the bill for extra accessories like more controllers always bites.

Although I don't personally have a Wii, I like the console because its different and has the motion features. I'm sure there will be enhancements with the technology to make it more accurate for things like golf and tennis.

I also envision fitness games and even multi-player games where you can compete against other users.

in Creatively adding value to mobile on the martini shaker*
at the mobile marketing conference I went to in March, the industry is tossing around the idea to allow advertisers to pay for the messages they send instead of having the user foot the bill. Currently, both the sender and receiver are paying a messaging fee.

Interesting approach to getting around SPAM. How many SPAM email messages would you get if the sender was paying $0.05 per message?

In reality, the carriers are double dipping, like paying the postman for every letter you get in the mail.

and, I think this idea is short lived, as more and more people convert from a per message plan such $0.10 per message or $5 / month for 500 text messages to an unlimited plan.
