in Google Announces Friend Connect on Social Times
Nick,
FYI,
The claim from Hadi Partovi of iLike is not accurate.
ReverbNation has been providing free web-based content management tools for musicians since 2006. Hundreds of thousands of Artists use our tools to deploy and manage show schedules, music players, blogs, web buzz, photos, videos, and 'fan collectors' across all social sites, blogs, and their homepages. We provide Artist's with comprehensive tracking and analytics, as well as real-time updating, all from a dashboard.
Don't get me wrong, I think that the "iLike/Ticketmaster/Garageband" company makes some great applications. But they should do a little more fact checking before making claims that are patently untrue.
As for this announcement from Google, we are as excited as you are. The concept of a universal 'friend' widget has been kicked around and even attempted in the past, with little success. No doubt, this attempt will yield better results.
Thanks for the great reporting, as usual.

in 2006/10/17/reverbnation-myspace-music-competitor/ on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
Pete,
Thanks for the great, accurate writeup. I'd love to give you or any of the posters a deeper demo of the site at any time. Simply email me at jedcarlson@reverbnation.com.
Although you covered it well, I want to reiterate that our goal is not to replace MySpace by any stretch (and SkepticBoy is right - that will never happen). We are staying focused just on the music by offering unique tools specifically designed to help artists succeed (grow their fan base, expand their marketplace).
We would never recommend that an artist abandon their Myspace page, or any other free promotional outlet that could generate fans or revenue for them. As you pointed out, we are trying to give artists tools that save them time (widgets) in managing all of the online presences, and make them each more effective. Tools like Widgets actually allow artists to enhance their pages on Myspace or other sites by importing information and functions from ReverbNation to those pages.
As for David's great comment about the music player popping up a window - this is the technical tradeoff required so that you can listen to the music you want while you browse to other artist pages or even away from the site without losing what you were hearing. We share David's dislike of popups, but we wanted to answer the frustrations that listeners have with other sites where they cannot simultaneously browse AND control what they are listening to. In the near future, the popup will contain useful information like a thumbnail of the artist, song name playing, and better controls.
We are still early in the development of ReverbNation and will be adding all sorts of features over the coming months. All feedback is appreciated, and very much influences the direction we take the site.
