in Happy Father’s Day | Do we need a separate day to celebrate Father’s Day ? on Little Gems
My personal opinion as a father, son and a grand uncle besides various other relationships, is that we do not need any of these to reinforce our affection and attachment with our parents. My 92 year old father and 38 year old son live with me and we run a very functional and happy bachelor home. This is possible because we care for each other deeply and we do not need special days to remember our attachments.

My sister and her husband looked after their parents and inlaws with great affection and care and I still remember my mother being so happy to be with them at every possible opportunity. I have many other cases within my family to share including a case of my male cousins looking after their parents till the very end.

Such days are perhaps needed in homes and countries where old people are sent off to old people's homes.

in Education is the root of everything on The Punekar
We were in Mumbai while our connections were in Hyderabad. I used to visit Pune for business and we used to pass through Pune while driving down to Hyderabad. We used to see a lot of cyclists, broad roads and avenues and hardly any traffic. The weather was always balmy and low on the humidity even in the summers. This was in the 1980s. We then decided to retire to Pune and invested here in a flat in 1990.

Pune has changed very dramatically from when we chose to come here, but the reasons that you cite are as valid today as they were then.

We would not like to live any where else now! Pune does that to you. It spoils you for any other place.

in Hindi, Marathi and Me on The Punekar
Mobile Indians usually speak at least four languages. Their mother tongue, Hindi, English and one language of the state from which they come. I do, besides a couple of others as well due to the nature of my employment before I retired in Pune. I would advise Marathi. It is a beautiful language and you are blessed to be in Pune, where you will learn it at its purest!

I am a Punekar and an Indian and I could not agree more. You do not have to be a foreigner to undergo this metamorphosis.

in A Maharashtrian Firang! on The Punekar
Welcome to Pune Anna.

I am very fond of Scotland having worked for a Scottish company for 23 years. I used to visit Scotland frequently though I was based in India. I used to stay with my brother and his lovely Scottish wife at Edinburgh and commute to Glasgow every day. My brother and my sister in law, used to love coming to Pune as often as they could possibly do.

Although they are now divorced, I am still in touch with my ex sister in law, and she may well land up here some time or the other.

You will fall in love with Pune as I did with Scotland.

I look forward to your posts on Pune. Should be interesting.

in 54 ways Pune has changed over the past 15 years on The Punekar
I have been living in Pune from mid 1990 and have seen all the changes listed here taking place before my eyes.

I live along the Nagar Road, and the changes here, such as what has happened to Kalyani Nagar, Viman Nagar, etc as well as the by pass to Hadapsar via Magarpatta city etc are all truly mind blogging.

We had originally decided to move to Pune for our retirement because it was a city of bicycles. Wonder whatever happened to that city!

in “Navratri” on The Punekar
The sizable Tamil population of Pune and surrounding areas also have their own particular form of celebration called Kolu - a display of dolls and visiting each others homes and pujas, bhajans etc. Places like Rastapeth and Kirkee really come alive in their homes.

I am not surprised that you are totally lost. The terminology is Sanskrit and needs to be translated. Would you like me to elaborate?

in CYG volunteers launched a signature campaign against PMC’s decision on The Punekar
This is bolting the door to the stable after the horse has bolted. To start with, the question whether Pune should host the CYG itself has not been answered. This is frivolous expenditure of scarce resources for a city struggling with its crumbling infrastructure, inadequate policing, rising crime rate and an apathetic administration and political class determined to spend money for obvious reasons, on unwanted festivals and sports meets. The student community should have asked some hard questions about the sports meet itself to start with.

Just ask the common man on the streets as to what he thinks of CYG and you will find an echo of what I have stated here. Ask him about the PMC denying expenditure on publicity campaign and he will say, that the guys who would have benefited refused to share the bounty with the rest of the crowd. They are not unintelligent.

in The Politics of Plagiarism on Plagiarism Today
Jonathan, I salute you for a great post. It is a magnificent piece of writing the likes of which I have not seen in the blog space in a long time.

Politicians all over the world are a different species from ordinary people. They are all so self centered that they do not listen to voices of reason. This is particularly true of open, democratic societies.

I hope that some sane elements in both parties will take your advise to heart and stop this forthwith. It is indeed getting to be a joke!

This morning both CNN and BBC advise that complete evacuation of New Orleans has been advised! I hope that everything works out for you. My prayers for the safety and well being for you and all people of New Orleans.

Jonathan Bailey Getting out early has been something of a tradition for the two of us. The mandatory evac was announced at 8 am on Sunday, we got out at 1 am Saturday, almost 36 hours before. We saw no traffic, no congestion and, despite having a dog and taking the long way, we only took about five hours to get way into the upstate.

I keep hoping every time that people will learn my lesson but no one seems to. Every time the roads are clear. It's a bit frustrating to see the mayhem at the city right now, knowing that it easily could have been avoided...

Jonathan Bailey We are safe, the only thing we are concerned about is the safety of good friends who stayed behind and our home. The latter, however, can be replaced... Thank you for your support.
