my first thought is - to go to university, you have to pay them exorbitant amounts of money - to go to YC you need to send a plan/prototype and they pay you and hopefully in 6 months - you get a lot more money (and a startup education).

Ben Parr I still see it as the same. To go to a university, you have to send them a transcript/essays. They accept you (after months of waiting) and hopefully in 4 years you get a college education, a degree, and a new salary benchmark.

in What I was using to hit Facebook — unreleased Plaxo Pulse on Scobleizer
all Plaxo Pulse needs to do now is put a "timing" mechanism on their Facebook "scraper" so that it will not be identified as a bot. :)

I'm wondering how Facebook is different from Michael Crook? Once your data is "out in the open" (since you posted your email, phone, etc.) then it's pretty much in public. I'd like to see where they draw the line. BTW "scraping" information from Facebook is trivial - you don't even need a script (of course it's faster if use one) but you can use their very own FQL to find all the user_ids of your network and then from there it's trivial to get the information using the user_ids using query requests (more tedious than a request but if you use it discretely you should get the info that you want) - of course, I'm assuming you're doing all this for a "worthy cause" ;)

Hi Russ,

great post. Maybe for 2008, you can do a "Paul Graham", find young upstart entrepreneurs and based on what you learned in 2007 exchange your advice and some of your seed capital for equity - I'm sure when you get back your "job" that you'll have more "cash flow" to help these up and coming technopreneurs.

in Will Google “Friendster” Facebook? on Scobleizer
Looks like Brad Fitz' thesis http://bradfitz.com/social-graph-problem/ is coming together! :) What if Google bought Friendster? Friendster is already releasing a public API by November 30, right?

in Is Facebook Overvalued? on AllFacebook
“The value of a social network is defined not only by who’s on it, but by who’s excluded.”

exactly. that's the difference/value of being in aSmallWorld.net and aBigWorld.net :)

in Stuff on Paul Graham
I think it was Andy Warhol that pointed out that when you buy a Coke - you're getting the same Coke that the President is getting - you just can't get a "better Coke" than anyone else - so unless you're collecting something like a Van Gogh painting, most of the stuff that we accumulate is basically the same thing that everybody has. Thanks for this post. I'm going to have to clear a room full of stuff and make it usable again.

1. You can use Vimeo instead of YouTube - it uploads faster than YouTube anyway.

2. Use Flickr for your pictures

3. Get a swissmail.org secure email account for your sensitive email.

4. Use SlideShare for your powerpoint presentations

5. Blog somewhere else other than Blogger.com :)

in Campaign to Reduce Wikipedia’s PageRank to Zero on Marketing Pilgrim
some thoughts:

1. it's not easy to put an article up in Wikipedia let alone put links inside it. really. try it. there's an army of deletionists inside wikipedia that will mark your article with speedy deletion if it doesn't subscribe to wikipedia standareds

2. it's hard enough to get second sources to be referenced by a tertiary source like like Wikipedia. I'm thinking this might discourage people to put up meaningful material there and also develope the stubs.

3. is there an alternative to wikipedia then? a wiki without the nofollow? so this is like a nofollow virus that's slowly infecting the WWW as more downstream wikis assimilate the nofollow tags

4. I'm wondering how big G will now rank relevance ... (thinking out loud) :P
