in A drop in the cap for Bruce Pearl on Inside the Hall
I would hope the decision would be up to Pearl....If he wants to come IU should give him the job. If it he doesn't, well that's too bad, we need to find someone else, someone eager to turn around IU.

in Should Indiana be interested in Scott Skiles? on Inside the Hall
As a huge Bulls fan, I have a couple of thoughts on Skiles:
1) No team ever beat the Bulls due to preperation. When Skiles was coach, the Bulls always had a better gameplan then the other team did. Period. He Made hall of famer Pat Riley look like an amateur two years in a row in the playoffs, and the Bulls continualy had great inbounds plays/plays coming out of timeouts. As far as X's and O'x go, it's tough to find someone better than Skiles.
2) Skiles always had short term success in the NBA. He was a good coach for the Suns before their players got sick of him, and he was a good coach for the Bulls until they got tired of him. This wouldn't happen in college, because at most his players would only be there for four years. So the 'my way or the highway' attitude might just work in college, (it has for other coaches.)
3) The big issue would be recruiting. I have no clue how he would do. I'm not sure anyone would. So to me the only way Skiles could be appointed head coach would be if his assistant coaches were loaded with smooth talking SOB's who could help Skiles land some big name talent.

yeah, I don't see alot of Pete Carroll type coaches having alot of success in College Hoops (maybe Roy Williams, but that's KU and UNC)...I doubt Bo Ryan or Tom Izzo would ever be considered "mr. nice guy" by their players. But, they win...every year. With or without the best talent.

in Ebanks will get release from Letter of Intent on Inside the Hall
Good question kellin. I think D.J. White deservedly winning big ten player of the year would be the last good thing I could think of.
As for Ebanks, I wish him well and don't blame him for changing his mind. Hopefully IU fans can show class and not boo the kid should he ever come to IU to play for another team, (which seems very unlikely.)

in Just say no to Kevin Stallings on Inside the Hall
A little off topic, but looking back on it Dakich should have benched all the kids who missed practice when Sampson resigned for the first half of that Northwestern game, including D.J. White.
Clearly the team doesn't respond to him, nor does it seem like they have too much respect for him. Dakich was likely not going to be re-signed anyways, he should have went down not kissing the ass of the players. Who knows? Maybe that would have lit a fire under them and they would've played harder.

Just because someone played basketball doesn't mean they are right for making big time decisions about basketball, (Exhibit A - Isiah Thomas)
I don't know any of the names on the comitte, but if I was appointing someone to find the new coach at IU I would want guys who had common sense and closely followed all of College Basketball, not just what IU is doing.

I do like Bennett and the more I read....the more I like. Hell he got a 4 seed in the tournament. Miller I don't think wold be bad......something about it just doesn't seem right.....but he he got a 3 seed. It is disappointing to hear these two wouldn't be interested in the job, but it is, after all, a rumor. I don't like many of the names on the committee. I agree with the "whose gonso" thing. Maybe he should pick the football coach. Yeagley and Radford seem like good pics though. I did here through the grape vine that John Calapari was text messaging former hoosier and new jersey net Brian Evans about the IU job.

in Bob Knight is none too pleased with Dickie V. on Inside the Hall
Wisconsin got hosed.
They were the regular season and conference tournament champions of the Big Ten.
Duke was neither in the ACC. Granted, the ACC was better than the Big Ten this year, but not by that huge of a margin at all.
I completely agree with whoever said the game has passed Dick Vitale. I remember a time when he had a lot of knowledge about the game and I found his insight really usefull when watching the games. Now, he's deadweight. Him and Chris Berman need to be taken out back and shot.

Who other than UNC, Duke, and Clemson (don't say Miami or VT) were any good in the ACC this year...they're just like the Big Ten...top heavy. Wisc. got the shaft. Hell, even Purdue got the shaft. MSU is the only team in the Big Ten that got what they deserved.

in Breaking down the Charlotte Regional on Inside the Hall
I'm not sold on Notre Dame Big A. Mike Brey has never shown (to my recolection) the ability to get his teams to play well in the dance.
Not to mention the dreaded 5-12 matchup negative karma that they have to deal with.
Other then that I like the assessment of the bracket. But who would you say is the guy most likely to randomly drop 24 points on 8-10 three point shooting? (it seems to happen every year)
One quick positive note for IU...IF (and it is a huge if) they beat Arkansas....Carolina's only two losses were both at home, so maybe the whole being in North Carolina isn't as helpfull as it may appear for them.

i agree that Brey isn't the most trustworthy head coach but ND will have the best player on the floor (Harangody) in arguably any game that they play. put UNC's talent around him and he would put up equal or better numbers than hansborough -- and he doesn't rely on scoring his points at the free throw line.
Matt J
Carolina is undefeated this season in road AND neutral court games. And they've got a 33-or-something-else-obscene in-a-row winning streak in the post season in games played in North Carolina.
For instance, they pretty much ran roughshod over NC State at the RBC Center.
So, even if Indiana can beat Arkansas, they don't stand a chance against the Tarheels.
Anyone going to the games? I'm heavily thinking about it (if i can find a ticket).

But this team has shown that it can battle through adversity....oh wait....nevermind.
Here's to hoping that they can find a real coach in the near future.
Of course...there's a small....SMALL part of me that thinks North Carolina is the #1 seed most likely to not get into the final four, maybe they'll go down in flames in the first weekend....just maybe

Nice thoughts on the game in general - I'm pretty sure you won't find a more popular person in Bloomington than D.J. White is.
(Although I would disagree with you that Tubby Smith is mediocre, he won a national title, as well as had Kentucky be one seeds in the tournament a number of times...he might not be a 'great' coach, but mediocre is a bit of an understatement. I think Jim Boheim is more mediocre then Tubby Smith...if you're looking for an overrated coach that is.)
Random note: Deandre Thomas, Lance Stemler, JaMarcus Ellis, Kyle Taber, Adam Ahlfeld, Jordan Crawford, Brandon McGee, Brett Finklemier (?!) and James Hardy were all at half price Kilroy's Sports last night celebrating the victory. I feel like Inside the Hall faithful need to know these things

Hopefully the guys who seemed to have been pouting about Sampson the most (Ellis...) will get their act together, get D.J. White the rock and take care of Minny tonight.

Who knows if P. Knight can recruit? That's my biggest concern. Well, that, and the fact that he'll only have about 10 games of head coaching experience after this year.
(I actually think it would be hilarious if Texas Tech fired him after this year with a statement like, "Uh, we hired Bobby Knight, not his son. Just because Bobby stepped down doesn't mean that we have to retain Pat as head coach...)
Not that I want anything bad to happen to Pat Knight, I just would find that hilarious. That may lead to the final straw of Bobby Knight flipping out and murdering several Texas Tech higher ups.
My new wild card that i haven't heard anyone talk about is Lawrence Frank. He's a "Bobby Knight guy" (whatever that means) he has strong ties in the east coast (he could help land Ebanks and other east coast guys.) And he could throw the old "I know how to get guys into the NBA...I coached there and was relatively successful.)
Not saying that I want him, i'd still take Pearl, Matta and maybe Bennett and Miller...but in terms of a long shot, Lawrence Frank maybe?

The game was ugly....very ugly.
But don't jump off the ledge just yet. It was a perfect storm of sorts for IU to drop this game. The discouraging thing was how badly they got beat...but this game is more fluke-ish then anything.
The game to watch will be on Wednesday, if the Hoosiers come out flat after being embarassed, then it's safe to say they're probably not going to get that intensity back the rest of the year. IF they come out fired up and smoke the Gophers...then maybe, just maybe, they'll be able to make a run later this month.

* How did MSU only score 36 points against Iowa? What the hell?
* This game, if anything, was an anomoly, let's not get too carried away. Jordan Crawford missed a break away dunk, which was absurd, and Michigan State was hitting EVERYTHING.
* I still like IU to win the Big Ten tournament next week, that is, assuming that they bounce back and let this loss go.

We'll be one and done in the B10 if we play like we are now and most likely we will because we have no one playing like a team. We will win Wed., lose to PSU, lose 1st round of B10 tourney and go 1-1 in NCAA out west to finish the season at 26-8. We will then have defections and the new coach will begin the rebuilding process. 09-10 will be a good year for us. Forget the 08-09 season as whatever we do as far as wins go will just be building for the next season.

This is really depressing. This is one of the most talented teams we've had since 01-02......and we can't do any better than this? Dakich should not be coaching this team. He doesn't actually coach anyhow. The last 3 games have been pathetic. This coaching situation has really taken its toll on this team. There is no way you can compare the 93 hoosiers to this team anyhow. No way. That team was talented in all spots and were well coached. They also had to deal with a lot better competition in the big 10. I'm fusterated like every other IU fan right now, and it is not just because we got blown out. I'm tired of hearing about the KS BS. I'm tired of no offense and poor defense. I'm tired of adding years to the last time we won an NCAA championship. I'm just sick of it. I'm tired of it. We need to get someone in charge of this program that knows what in the hell they are doing. I mean the damn Knight mess....the Davis disaster...and now the KS deal.....come on. I mean how much more can we put up with?
Whoever said DJ should be a 4 is absolutely correct. I thought maybe we could get something out of a 6-11center like eli. Eli, DJ, Ellis, Gordan, Basset. Size is what usually wins the Big 10. We always have pretty good gaurds....I think its time to focus on the big men. That is what brought helped us win in 01-02. We had jefferies, newton, odle, leach...that gave us some decent size that could be rotated.
I don't know. We need to get a damn coach.

I have to say I thought we had a chance today, but I watched that game at the Breslin Center today with friends of mine and I was embarrassed to where my IU sweatshirt in there. They hit everything because they only shot WIDE OPEN lay-ups, dunks, and three pointers!!! I don't think we forced them to take a contested shot the whole game.

Michigan State is the total wild card here. I was shocked that they lost to Penn State and Iowa...at the start of the year I thought they had the most talent in the conference.
They could lose by 40 to Wisconsin or upset them on the road. They could choke on senior night to IU or dominate. I really have no idea what to expect out of those guys.
Sadly, I think that puts Purdue in the best position, because they don't have to play those crazy Spartans at all. They get to play ugly ass Kosta Kofus and Ohio State and then some jag bag bottom feeders in the big ten.
However, I think OSU beats Purdue (As good as they've been, I can't believe a loaded freshman team will only have two conference losses.)
But I have a sinking feeling that Wisconsin will once again emerge Big Ten champions.

I think the Lynch and Dakich comparisons are comparing apples to oranges.
Lynch took over during Spring football, well before the regular season even STARTED. Lynch was Hoeppner's right hand man and had Hep's full support and confidence before Hep passed away. Lynch had an entire season to show Greenspan what he could do, and Lynch got the team to a bowl game - Something that hadn't been done for over a decade for the Hoosiers. Not to mention the players were genuinely happy when it was announced Lynch was re-signed to be head coach.
Dakich on the other hand had to take over with five games left in the season. Before the start of the year there was no serious worry Sampson wouldn't be there to finish the year. Dakich wasn't Sampson right hand man, and who knows how happy the players are with him as their head coach? No matter what happens the rest of the year, it was Sampson who got the team in the position to have great things happen, not Dakich, If Sampson had resinged before the first game of the year and IU was 24-4 with Dakich at the helm all year, it might be comparable to Lynch.
But that's not what happened. The Lynch/Dakich comparisons aren't accurate.

Dirk: Gordon no doubt had a bad game tonight...and I agree Basset may have the better shot.
BUT, i'd rather have Gordon shooting free throws down the stretch, he's the best on the team at free throws.
Also, even in the games Gordon plays terrible, (like today) teams still need to prepare for him like he's the best player. I think indirectly he makes guys like Basset and Ellis better because everyone is so focused on stopping Gordon...(Like on the fast break where Crawford dished to Basset for a three...Gordon was on the other side of the court and two OSU guys trailed him leaving Basset open.)
Again, Gordon had a poor game...but c'mon let's not be too tough on the leading scorer in the Big Ten as a true freshman. I think people just expected Kevin Durant when he got here and he's just not that guy.

You proved my point: EJ makes his team better when he doesn't have the ball; Bassett makes the team better when he has the ball. At the end of a close game, I want the ball in the hands of the guy who won't turn into Bracey Wright. Yes EJ has talent- not anyone can lead the Big Ten in scoring even if his coach lets him play 40 minutes while giving away 15 offensive possessions per game (turnovers + ill-advised missed shots+offensive fouls). But talent alone does not yield victories. I expected a freshman when he got here, and that's what he is. It's too bad he'll be gone before he refines his game, buys into the team concept, etc.
Raymond
I will agree with you on this. Gordon is fine with me at the line late in the game and him simply being on the court may make some other guys better.
However, this kid needs to have his ass put on the bench every now and then and needs to get an ass chewing when he screws up. You're going to get fouled when you drive the lane and you may not make every shot, BUT when someone bumps you and you flop and just give up the shot and don't go up strong...you need a little talking to. 1-7 from 3point range in the first half...quit pulling up from 3, and I blame that just as much on the coach as the kid.

I'm a season ticket holder and to me this was about as sloppy as they have looked all year. (Maybe the UConn game...) In that regard, i'm actually happy with the win, that they were able to win without bringing their A game.
On the other hand, they looke pretty poor on both ends of the floor and (I hate to say it) Kofus outplayed D.J. tonight, (Although White looked kind of gimpy at the end, I hope he's ok.)
One other thing I noticed is Matta totally worked the refs over to getting the favorable calls. Calhoun did the same thing when UConn came here to play. Good coaches make the refs see things their way...Phil Jackson is one of the masters at that, and watching Dakich it was pretty clear he knows how to get the refs in his favor.

I don't trust Dawkins.
if he's so amazing how come he's been an assistant at Duke for about 45 years? (Maybe that's an overestimate...)
I'm all for taking a chance on a younger, hungrier coach. The only two 'veteran' coach i'd like to see at IU would be Bruce Pearl. (That way Bruce Weber wouldn't even be the best Bruce in the big 10)
I believe Pearl would make a jump over to IU. If Roy Williams left KANSAS...then I believe Pearl would leave football lovin' SEC Tennessee for IU. Unless of course the Volunteers win the national championship this year.

He must really hate the Carolinas....no Duke or UNC love...now that's a stark contrast to his colleagues at ESPN.
Not sure if we can pull it off, but we certaintly have the talent...hope we can play well tonight.
Obviously, every game is now a "must win," but even more importantly, we have to play WELL in winning tonight in order to regain some confidence after everything that has happened. Thankfully we played Northwestern in Dakich's first game, but now we have to be ready for an Ohio State team that knows it's on the verge of being eliminated from NCAA consideration.

Steve: North used to be a hot dog vendor at Wrigley Field.
His original purpose was to bring the 'joe blow' perspective to the Chicago Sports radio scene...but since he's been around and famous forever in Chicago he's lost that common man perspective, if he ever had it.
For Chicagoans I recommend the World Wide Leader for Sports radio. Mike and Mike isn't bad for a national broadcast, Waddle and Silvy are pretty underrated and Mac, Jurko and Harry are in my opinion the best Chicago has to offer.

Going to have to disagree....
Boers & Bernstein are the best sports talk Chicago has to offer.
They are the most intelligent and the funniest. Plus they are world class wise-asses. Good, good stuff.

Mike North is such an assclown.
Dakich is doing the right thing by 'Bill Lynching it' aka, not saying anything interesting...that's what needs to be done.
I feel bad for Double D...I really have a hard time believing he's going to get the job regardless of how the team does the rest of the year. They could make the final four and i'd still be asking for a new coach....

To take a quote from Peter Griffin:
You know what grinds my gears?
Ignorant professional broadcasters who still think IU is "the University of Indiana."
Assclown indeed.

Typically I get very nervous if teams I like are good 'close game teams.'
Games decided by five points or less, especially in basketball, generally come down to chance. It's more luck than skill if you keep winning close games, and it will eventually catch up to you.
That being said, the Hoosiers are a great free throw shooting team, which certainly will bold well come tournament time.
