in Amazon’s Kindle in Europe: What’s the holdup? on VentureBeat
If the Kindle were meant as a netbook, I can understand the hold up. I know they want to ability to sell me books while on holiday, but I'd be happy to get a European Kindle with just Wi-Fi.

Maybe the new Zune is so awful that after seeing it your life would lose all purpose. Makes sense to hold off buying anything if that is the case.

in On Those Microsoft Ads on ParisLemon
Having spent a few weeks with a Mac now, I'm loving it more and more. That being said, used and old, it cost me more than a new shiny Dell which would outperform it in any aspect. Apple products are things of desire. They are priced that way and are aimed towards certain people. There's nothing wrong with that.
The quality thing hasn't been much of an issue in years. iPods break all the time, they are notorious for being extremely unreliable products, but they are nice and elegant. The lower range Macs are really embarrassing, yet they have high resale value (no one would ever think about selling a 3 year old PC).
Mac may be ahead of the game when it comes to operating systems (strange, because that's supposed to be Microsoft's domain), but does the price tag still justify it?

Heh heh, I'm guessing my old ProDOS skills won't be of much help these days...

So huge in fact, that for the first time in 20 years I have purchased an Apple product. I am (almost, it's in the mail) a proud owner of a used Mac Mini. Exciting times.

in Without the DRM-free card, Amazon fights on against iTunes with the price card on VentureBeat
My vote is for Amazon as well. In the end of the day they are the ones who are really benefiting the consumer. Apple could learn a thing or two about not ripping off its clients.
Don't get me wrong, no one should EVER buy a T.I. album, no matter how low the price is, but if you do, at least you're only getting swindled for 4 bucks.

in After Getting Smoked, Microsoft Opts Out Of the Race on ParisLemon
I actually had to go back to IE after using Opera for years. Back in the days of IE 6 Opera wasn't displaying all the web pages correctly (especially in foreign languages) and I had to revert. I used Maxthon though which was a great solution until Firefox came and saved the day.

in Friday the 13th Producer Already Talking Sequel on /Film
I don't mind the F13 remake. The series was always fun no matter what they did with it. Nightmare on Elm Street on the other hand deserves much better than a TV ad director.
What's wrong with getting Rob Zombie to do it? He did a great job with Halloween.

in Amazon sparks casual games pricing controversy on VentureBeat
And here I was thinking that the issue was that $9.99 was too high for these kind of games...
EmmyG If this was serious, then like many gamers, you fail to recognise that different people have different tastes than you do, and that what looks to you like a pointless waste of time is valuable entertainment to another.

If a game is a top-seller at $20 but you personally wouldn't spend $5 for it, does that mean the game should be repriced to $0.99? It means that you are not the target market. :)

in More possible Kindle 2 pics and details on VentureBeat
That's a ridiculous price. If I read 30books this year and pay full price for them it'd still be cheaper. They should have made it dirt cheap and focused on selling eBooks.

in Supposed leaked Android G2 shots reveal no keyboard on VentureBeat
Notice how the battery is almost empty. It must have been on for half an hour prior to its picture being taken :-)
But seriously, the keyboard was the main reason I bought my G1...I guess most people don't need it though.

MG Siegler yeah the battery drains like no other on the G1, that's for sure.

in Windows 7: 2009 or 2010? on VentureBeat
I'd rather they took their time and released it properly. Many of the Windows 7 features were originally planned for Vista. Microsoft did a rush job on that one and look at how it turned out. As long as they support Windows XP till 2010 I'm fine with waiting.

in Amazon kills Unbox, brings Video on Demand to life on VentureBeat
It seems that a lot of the people who would be interested in video on demand and any online solution would be the ones not living in the US. I know there are a lot of licensing hurdles, but these services could be much more profitable if they were to monetize the millions of users wishing to watch Lost in relatively "real time".
The amount of TV piracy that goes on in Europe should be proof enough. People are paying various P2P services a lot of money to be able to watch their favorite shows.

I find it very strange that they released it in the summer. It's an extended TV episode and for that matter most people will probably be watching it on DVD.

SilentJay74, this is how Digg works. If you want transparency and accountability go to Mixx or Propeller.
I doubt they're gonna change anything. Digg is built for the masses, namely 16 year olds who want to argue about top ten lists.
The fact that you and other more "inquisitive" members are active in this system is just a disturbance for those who run Digg.
Of course I prefer your contribution to Digg, but neither of us are their key domographic.

in Pownce opens file sharing to the public with larger sizes to boot on VentureBeat
I never understood why Pownce didn't take. It's a superior product to Twitter but I guess people go where their friends go. If Pownce had a bigger user base, I don't think I'd be using Twitter at all.

MG Siegler @charbarred - yeah I know a few people who feel the same way. I agree that Pownce has some better features, but I wonder at the same time if some of those hold it back from spreading as quickly as Twitter is because it's so simple.

You're right, I'm over simplifying things.
I think it would make for a nice post - new business models for musicians.

in 2008/03/28/rss-giving-away-music/ on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
All I'm saying is that the actual album is worth (at least to me) much more than anything else. I don't care about how many gigs I've seen and certainly not how many t-shirts I've purchased.
What I do care about deeply is the great music I've been listening to my whole life. If someone were to wipe all this amazing music from my memory, I'd be willing to pay a lot of money to get it back.
Devaluing recorded music, or just making it a vessel so that second rate acts could perform live in front of teenagers would take a lot of really talented musicians out of the equation.
Stan_Schroeder I think you are, once again, oversimplifying things.

It's not just about concerts. Some bands don't have concerts at all. There are many business models out there. For example, Einsturzende Neubauten actually offered people to pay and subscribe to their site where they had the chance of actively contributing on the new album. That's just one of 1000 possibilities.

It's a common argument that merchandise and tickets sales are the product, but I still think the album is the true product. Here's why:

Stan_Schroeder You're responding to Mike's post. I don't share all of his opinions on this topic. I think he makes a good point, but oversimplifies things - probably on purpose.

I do think that musicians should be able to earn money on recorded music. But, I don't think that it's a smart to try to create artificial scarcity where there is none and then base your entire business model on selling a product which can be freely copied by everyone, without adding any extra value.

Simply put, MP3s are worthless. You can't charge for them. It's stupid. CD, not so worthless. CD with a nice leaflet - even better. CD with an extra live DVD, signature from artist, nice big fat leaflet and poster...well, you get the idea.

I'm assuming that your traffic=money scheme means advertising. So in that case, the idea is to set up a site where you can download a certain album for free. This site will contain ads which will be considered the income for this album.
Now let's say the album cost $50,000 to make (including marketing and other overheads). Let's also say that equates to one RSS post on your site (there are many bands, many albums).
Now the big question is, do you make $50,000 from each post on this site?
Stan_Schroeder In the case of a news website, the traffic=money equation indeed means advertising. However, when we talk about music, what's important is to tie the product which must be free (MP3) to another product which is not so easily reproduced: concert tickets, t-shirts and other merch, limited edition media, band signatures, artwork etc. Trent Reznor and NiN did a great job with their Ghosts (I-IV) album.
