Business: Provides food and other materials for merchant ships and some smaller private vessels. Supplies include fresh fruit and vegetables, wire and rope, maps, lumber and any other item requested. The company can also serve as a liaison and translator for foreign crews.
Sales volume: Unavailable
Trivia: The company's historic headquarters since 1954, at Magnolia and Broadway, was recently condemned by the city of Long Beach to make way for a retail/residential development. The building may ultimately be moved to a new location because of its historical value, but the business itself will relocate to 16th Street and Daisy Avenue.

It's a specialty business, one built on personal relationships and quality of service. No one knows this better than Flo Martinez, whose late husband, Julian Martinez, opened Julian's Ship Supplies in downtown Long Beach nearly 70 years ago.

Flo took over after Julian died in the late 1990s and has watched as the harbor has evolved from its Navy days to become a key link in international trade.

Some customers date back decades.

"We know a lot of people, and that's helped us survive," Martinez said. "We can get them whatever exotic foods they might want, or if they need special equipment, it's our job to find it."

Often, a ship captain or agent will send an order by e-mail, detailing supplies needed and expected time of arrival and departure.

i def can't speak for them but i think it is the money problem (from lack of foot traffic + parking?) and i am told a restaurant of some kind may be going in next. they were doing really cool art and music shows in the last months. sad to see them close. that ISM show up at koo's right now is really cool if anyone happens to be in this neighborhood tho, and you can still get coffee @ passport!

also while i'm typing let me recommend kim fowley's 'international heroes' and elliott murphy's 'aquashow.' both are a weird mix of glam rock and electric dylan. lots of harmonica, lots of fur and make-up. many cool songs on each. not expensive but a little hard to find. neither out on CD i don't think but original LPs are kicking around... i got both of mine for like $5-$10. also i think billy joel is the session pianist on 'aquashow'!

the specifics of the settlement (according to a BBC report) were that pepsi would split at least $1 million per year (no date given for when payments actually started) between "charities chosen by" (BBC quote) the ludacris foundation, russell simmons' hip-hop action network (since russell simmons is the guy who actually made this all happen) and pepsi itself. so they didn't just give ludacris a bunch of money. instead they had to donate to charities specified by the ludacris foundation and the hip-hop action network (which certainly could have included actual donations to the ludacris foundation and the hip-hop action network) as well as charities pepsi picked themselves. i haven't been able to find anything particularly specific on where the ludacris settlement money went, but pepsi documents detailing corporate giving in 2006 are available online at pepsico.com (though they wouldn't work on my collapsing computer, so i can't quote them) and overall pespi charity contributions (as detailed on their own site) total about $59 million. i'm not sure if that's yearly for 2006 or over all time, though since pepsico had a net income of $1.26 billion last year, i wouldn't be surprised if they give away something like $59 million a year in charitable contributions. anyway sorry i can't give you a specific answer yet, though a general answer is that ludacris and the ludacris foundation didn't get all the money or even all of their portion of the money at once, and by the rules of the settlement they had to share control over where the settlement went. unfortunately i haven't found records yet showing how much money the ludacris foundation itself got from pepsi and what they did with it. if i come across something i'll post it here.

lucky for you the cd is near, unlucky cuz i can't find the liners but... it's "cock in my pocket" (full version) and it came from either the sax player or pianist. i think it's like post-raw power metallic k.o./heavy liquid stuff. these cds rule -- they also got michael yonkers, charlie nothing, vincent black shadow, even some band that is just listed as 'unknown acetate.' plus the zine is killer. he draws all the art (and the ads!) and handletters everything. no computer layout. big feature on psychedelic motown lps and tons of profiles on worthy obscuro bands. def check it out!
