in How To Stop Twitter Auto DMs on Dave Delaney : Dave Made That
Dave, I'm completely fascinated by the problems you raise that you and others have on Twitter. This is yet another one I'm perplexed by. So, people are getting DMs that are automatically generated by other people? I follow and am followed by close to 700 people and I have to say this has never happened to me ever. Am I misunderstanding what you are describing?
Also, I have to wonder again here, as I had on another one of your posts about people getting spammed on Twitter, how much of this is caused by one thing: automatically following everyone that follows you. I only follow people I see are real people having real conversations by reading what they share.
I totally enjoy your posts about Twitter, but I'm stumped again. Sorry for bringing this up yet again. I'm just curious as I've never heard of an auto DM. Thanks for the education!

Thanks for the comment Christian. Unfortunately, spammers tend to auto follow you. This becomes a real problem If you accept all followers. They then unfollow you to increase their numbers to make them appear legit.
I understand you don't follow back everyone, I try to, but it's difficult. It's different strokes for different folks.
The point here is that once you follow them back, you receive an automated direct message. This usually includes a link to said spammer's splog or worse. Either way, if you receive DMs as text messages (which I do) this can get costly depending on your plan. For example, Canadians get screwed on their mobile plans.
It's also a time waster to have to determine which DMs are authentic and which are pointless. I understand that some people set this up not meaning any harm, but it's plain annoying.
The point to Twitter is to be authentic, so an automated direct message of any kind is an insult. That's my two cents.
Cheers,
Dave

in 5 fun steps to spam your Twitter friends on Dave Delaney : Dave Made That
I have had zero twitter spam during the entire time I've used Twitter. I'm not sure why, but I think it's because I don't automatically reciprocate follows. The only time I have to endure twitter spam is when the twitter conversation turns to said twitter spam. Is the solution as simple as not following spammers?

It certainly helps. Some good indications are:
- does the follower have hundreds (or more) of people they're following, but
few followers?
- does the follower have an avatar/image?
- does the follower have only a few, dated tweets on their profile?
Hope these help. Thanks for your comment Christian.

in Is Twitter broken? Or am I losing friends? Twitter is broken. on Dave Delaney : Dave Made That
This is a very interesting topic. I'm just stream of consciousness'ing here, but it is something I've thought a little about.
Friends in real life tend to associated based on shared life experiences. Sometimes it's that you happen to exist in the same place, like school or work. Sometimes it's around shared interests, like a sports team or music.
One thing I noticed on FaceBook is how much i DO NOT have in common with people I call friends. It's almost like technology is begining to magnify difference. Let me explain. I have a friend who loves a certain band. I can't stand that band, but I really like this person. Our real friendship has naturally evolved to exclude that band ever coming up. That happens very organically and naturally. Now, enter technology. My friend is constantly bombarding me with crap about this band online. What do I do? UNSUBSCRIBE - DEFRIEND - UNFOLLOW.
It's not really a judgement on friendship, because friendship and real relationships are broader than technology's trend toward narrowcasting.
I suspect this will soon enough become a subject for sociologists who will discover something very new about our relationships and how they form and last thanks to being able to see connections through technology. But don't take it personally, and most importantly, if you want to grow your online audience, this can be the toughest advice (at least it's a challenge for me I am learning to address): broad appeal grows online audience. If you want people to react to you based on their prejudices, broadcasting hyper-focused interests to a wide open channel will do that. Instead, create channels specifically for that content - groups, seperate twitter accounts, etc.
Liek I said, this is all stream of consciousness here, not well thought out, but something I've been thinking about myself. My conclusion is it's all good and that no one is saying they don't like you. They are just saying their freindship is more valuable than having to endure your love for that stupid band.

CC Chapman had a great episode of Managing The Gray some time ago where he
talked about "friends" vs "Friends. He had some great insight.
For me, if my friends are spamming me I send them this:

I can't help but wonder sometimes what people like the woman pictured above where like when things were fine in their lives - when they had a job, a home, a family - just like the rest of us. Then I imagine myself looking old and dirty, sorting my meager belongings under a bridge thinking about when I mattered. We're all one accident, one job, one hospital stay away from sorting it all out in the street.

in News from Twitter HQ on account suspensions on Dave Delaney : Dave Made That
It's probably the number of posts you do with links vs. the tweets that are part of a conversation, but this wouldn't happen if people could flag users.
While my abnormally large head is cranking on it, they should also create "trust" and "popularity" badges - Trust = some ratio using the difference between followers and the followed -|- Popularity = some ratio using the difference between those you follow and those who chose to independently follow you (which would be those who simply found you and followed you). Then their fancy spam detecting algorythms would skip eliminating a lot of good people while people would then stop trying to follow everyone on the friggin planet.

That's a great idea on the trust badges. As far as poring links on
Twitter, they usually enhance the topics. Hmm
