in Win A Personalized TFT DVD Commentary for Your Favorite U.S. Movie! on The Film Talk
The Royal Tenenbaums?! Dude, The Life Aquatic was the first Wes Anderson movie I could stomach. True, the relationships are fewer and less complex in Aquatic, but you have a) David Bowie songs in Portugese, b) Jeff Goldblum in a Cousteau-ian role, c) Bill Murray in a very natural role, and d) the Jaguar Shark. Oh yeah, and much more hilarity. ... ... I guess Royal could be a close second, but it doesn't have Willem Dafoe

How about same actor, but... "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas"? Burt Reynolds sings while wearing a man-thong. Oooooo, I love to dance a little sidestep!

Shouldn't you also make a disclaimer: "Many will enter, few will win."?

It's like Mad Max Beyond Thunderball - Many films enter - one film leaves.

in The Film Talk - Part 46 - Best of 2008 on The Film Talk
Great episode. That Benjamin Button bit made me laugh hard. I am disappointed that of the 2008 films, neither Dear Zachary nor Let the Right One In were mentioned. Great films that, at the very least, deserve honorable mentions. Here's to another year of movies and reviews!

Hadn't seen 'Let the Right One In' when we record this - though that's a film I'd recommend any lover of vampire pics to see + have seen trailers for Dear Zachary - will check it out when get the chance

in The Film Talk - Part 43 - Quantum of Solace / A View to a Kill / License to Kill on The Film Talk
Dangit... just listened to last week's episode today (we weren't allowed on iTunes for about a week) and heard that Jett needed someone to see Quantum with... I now have no one to go see it with. O, the humanity!
To top it all off, I f-ing missed the Stanley Kubrick "Fear and Desire" showing. Life sucks.

Yeah, never asked you about your name. Is the name you had in high school your given name, or will that always remain a mystery to us plebians?

Man... just listened to this week's Film Talk. Sounded like Jett was ready to engage in fisticuffs. I'm all about watching crap movies, but I have to enter it with the right mindset or I won't enjoy myself at all.

in Old Films That Look Better Than They Actually Are #1: The Great Gatsby on The Film Talk
For the "Old Movies" category, how about "The City of Lost Children". I don't remember the original French title, but the movie starred Ron Perlman. Beautiful movie, seemingly interesting, but when you break it down, utter crap. It has its moments, but not to the same greatness as Amelie (same director).
As far as the "Actors Everyone Likes But Can't Name", I nominate Stephen Root. Brilliant, versatile actor that everyone still remembers as Milton from Office Space. He was in the show Talk Radio, the movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and has had lots of supporting, hilarious roles.

Ha, I was going to mention City of Lost Children, so 10 points for beating me. Also, I'm not sure a film looking better than its content is necessarily a bad thing. If we enjoy visual art and photography and good use of color and form, why not enjoy a movie that does these better than anything else? I'll add Hero and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow to this category.

OMG, stephen root! i heart him, he's sooo funny!

in Nashville: ‘Movie City USA’? on The Film Talk
I suppose their idea of "Southern Drama" would be an indie version of The Orchard Keeper. Great... not a Cormac McCarthy fan.
