in It’s neither the chicken, nor the egg - Thoughts on disrupting online dating business models on null risiko
Good idea, this is definitely the problem that needs to be solved. One addition to this idea is to use the "matchmaker" concept. Instead of targeting people who are looking for dates, instead target their friends. For example, if Alice is single, target Alice's friend, Betty. Betty thinks that her friend Charlie is a good match for Alice, so Betty makes the connection between them. With this approach, you don't need to build a big, existing pool of potential mates to wade through, you are stitching together the existing little pools of potential mates that naturally exist in any social graph.

I actually have some ideas on how something like this could potentially be very profitable once Facebook rolls out its virtual currency / dev payment platform, feel free to shoot me a mail if you want more details.

in How Can Facebook Crack its Advertising Problem? on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
The only advertising problem that Facebook has is the fact that it's not 2010 and they're yet not rolling in massive amounts of money. They've got the users, they've got the data, now all they need is ad inventory. If only they had some way for site owners to get users to log into their sites using their Facebook credentials...

in The Social Advertising Race Has Begun on Social Times
Great analysis, and totally agree that they should roll out a payment platform integrated with FC. Not only would that be a huge convenience to both users and site owners, it would also give FB valuable information on who is actually making purchases online, how much they are spending, what types of services are converting what types of users, etc...

in Google’s GMail Themes - It’s the Little Things on Ryan Spoon
I think the reason they're asking for your location is because certain themes change from day to night based on your local time. It's pretty cool.

Ryan Spoon Which themes change?
I find that the Ice Cream theme breaks when you have the new three column gmail layout installed

in GoDaddy Offers .Me Domain Names. It’s a Big .Fail So Far. on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
I thought that the initial process was that any .me domains that were registered by multiple users would then need to go through a reverse auction process to determine who the final recipient is:

From the GoDaddy FAQ's:
What is the auction process for .me domains?

During the Sunrise and Landrush periods, we may receive multiple applications for the same .me domain. During the Sunrise period, we validate the applications to ensure applicants entered the appropriate trademark information. If an application does not pass validation, we reject it. If we still have multiple applications for the same domain, we auction the domain to the highest bidder.

fdask That doesn't apply as we're not in the Sunrise or Landrush periods. Those are over.

I got burned on two attempted registrations earlier as well. :(

This is ridiculously cool. I just made it my new start page (and I haven't used anything besides a blank start page for the past year). Very, very cool hack, Stefan!

in Email At The Work Place - Lets Phase It Out! : Republic Of Internets on Republic Of Internets
You nailed this one! I work at a large company as well and it seems as though I spend the vast majority of my day wading through Emails as opposed to actually getting work done. For a few weeks I tried blocking off the first few hours of my day to (shock!) actually get work done before logging into my Email, but eventually I fell back into the old habit.

in It’s The Interface Stupid! - Part 2 : Republic Of Internets on Republic Of Internets
This is an interesting issue, as Apple is really competing against itself with a "low-end iPhone" option. It they release it, they canabalize one of their primary revenue streams (Nano). However, if they don't release it, Motorola and gang will copy the interface and sell iPhone-type devices on the cheap. And of course you've got the MS Zune Phone speculation that's out there, too.

in Thoughts on SuperDistribution on James D Kirk is Boldly Going! Are you?
Interesting thoughts, I personally get very irritated when an acquaintance starts in on a direct sales pitch. I did like Steve's idea, though, people love to see their work in print.

Great blog, btw, keep up the good work.
