in Anti-immigrant groups back vehicle impound ballot initiative on The Colorado Independent
I dunno, it's not just racial profiling, there is another aspect to this law: drunk drivers who lose their license continue to drive, and they don't have insurance. A dear family member was badly injured by just such a driver. It's been almost four years, and she still suffers from the internal injuries caused by this drunk driver who had no insurance to even help with the medical bills.

If he had lost his car in his previous DUIs perhaps he wouldn't have had the $2500 and he wouldn't have been back on the road.

in Who needs to conserve energy? Not Americans on The Colorado Independent
I do agree about the big gas-guzzling SUVs though. President Clinton warned about them in his tenure but Detroit didn't listen, and big oil didn't want them to listen, it was push, push Americans to consume more and more so they could jack the prices higher and higher. Detroit could have done better long ago.

They could have easily had big cars that get 30 mpg instead of 12 or 15.

in Who needs to conserve energy? Not Americans on The Colorado Independent
On behalf of the "little people" (you know, the ones about whom Leona Helmsley reportedly said "only the little people pay taxes", but denied she said it): I wonder what percent of the energy resources these little taxpayers use, compared to the top few percent of extremely wealthy people in this country? How much gas does a car driven to work consume compared to a private jet that flies around the world for instance? How much energy does a 1500 square foot house use as compared to a 30,000 sq. ft. house? And how much gas is used getting the gardeners, the cooks, the housekeepers and the chauffeurs and on and on to the 30,000 sq. ft. house compared to the little 1500 sq. foot house where the homeowner does their own maintenance?

Who should do the sacrificing?

You're right,I stand corrected, re $2 bill.

Just because I've never seen one doesn't mean it's not so, according to Wikipedia it's 1% of the money.( probably in collectors' cache?)

um the mountain..

After viewing the kid's website, if this kid is in any way indicative of those highly touted "Schaffer Family Values", I think our country can do without them.

Those "Schaffer Family Values" may be about as phony as a two dollar bill, or a picture of Mt. McKinley purporting to be Pikes Peak.

Kingtut... you don't see anything unusual about a college student having a picture of Jesus holding an automatic rifle standing in front of a flag with the words " What Would Republican Jesus Do?"

Hello.....there have been mass shootings in colleges and high schools, last week a mass shooting in Tennesee in a church because the shooter thought they were "liberals"...

The more I digest this, I think I may have been wrong saying to cut the kid some slack.

I'm reminded of a Sinclair Lewis quote:

"When facism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross".

As the twig is bent so grows the tree.

That being said I say cut the kid some slack.

Sister Schmeling is on the right track, teach him responsibility for his actions and respect for others.

Sorry, Mr. and Mrs. Schaffer, but it's a little late for "firm and severe discipline". What does that mean anyway, taking the rod to him? Grounding him? Making him write sentences? We're talking college student here for Pete's sake.

Spare the rod and take away his HOT ROD if you want some respect.

in Musgrave joins House GOP energy stunt, still pockets oil money on The Colorado Independent
How nice of Marilyn to want to work late to help her oil buddies.

Maybe they'll get us cheaper gas prices in, oh, say 10 or 20 years.

Maybe she should be more concerned that the cost of food went up more last month than in the last 27 years. Let's see, who was president then, oh yeah, another Republican.

Maybe she should also be checking with the various agencies to see who was responsible for the bum report that tomatoes were causing the salmonella outbreak, causing American farmers to ditch their crop.

in HD 64 challenger Ken Torres has more fines than campaign cash on The Colorado Independent
It sounds like Torres is naive and has been neglected or used by his party. The government has high interest in getting a GOP rep down there I'm sure. Noone can better represent the area than Wes McKinley, and noone can better stand up to the government abuse of power in re Pinon Canyon land confiscation.

Colorado Ethics Watch, it looks like you could catch some real fish this time, swimmming in Ms. Weist's 527 Pond.

Not exactly a "son of the west" is he?

I don't put much stock in anything that comes from the Post anymore.

Richardson might be a candidate for Secretary of State but not VEEP. Obama will lose if he is the VP candidate.

Re Obama's cabinet, John Edwards would make a terrific Attorney General.

Of course Ms. Marie can say or sing whatever she wants.

However, so far as I know she was asked to sing THE National Anthem, not HER National Anthem or A National Anthem. I agree she PROBABLY did not mean to insult anyone, but at the same time she knew she would, that's why she didn't clear it with the mayor first.

Our USA Olympic Athletes in China will have THE National Anthem of the United States played, not HER version or A version. We are trying very hard to be one people, united, in this country. We've come a long way, but obviously we have much further to go.

It's strange they have stopped the impeachment horn-honking after all this time, probably it has intensified because people are becoming increasingly frustrated. The pillage of our country has quickened this year, it's like they want to get all they can in their few remaining months in office, now banks are folding, the Constitution seems to be going out the window...

Well, only 177 days until they leave office (unless Kucinich gets them impeached sooner).

Honk, honk, honk.

in The Colorado Independent » Denver promises DNC transparency, delivers a rant on The Colorado Independent
A lack of transparency to say the least, and perhaps some people who aren't sure what their job is, but I still think there is Fed and other involvement that is beyond our mayor's control.

It does sound like the DPD is subtly saying they won't be too quick to arrest people. (Maybe the protesters can even hold up a sign??) We do want to keep the candidates safe and give the people the right to free speech at the same time.

And noone will get slimed or gooed or sonic noised or microwaved.

Protesters will just have to watch out for pepper balls and all the other toys. And the tasers. And the Colorado Springs cops.

Stay safe or stay home.

in McCain praises Dalai Lama on The Colorado Independent
re "would that be the millions of Americans who support the surge and McCain's 100-year plan in Iraq..."

I don't think there are millions of Americans who still support the war in Iraq or who want us to be in Iraq for 100 years spending trillions. I think Americans made that clear with the vote in '06, except the Senators and Representatives from both parties didn't get the message.

All the same I hope the Dalai Lama's peaceful message rubbed off on McCain and he was enlightened to go down the path of nonviolence.

Ah yes, let's hope he sees the light.

in Another Steamboat-area official implicated in drunk-driving case on The Colorado Independent
Getting drunks off the road is a good thing, I'm not fond of the tasering idea for anyone though unless all else fails.I think tasering has a high possibility for misuse.

But I am sick of reading about drunk drivers who cause death to others, then finding out they have a 20 year history of DUI's, and you wonder what failed in the system that they weren't stopped before they killed someone. Taking away their license, previous DUI's,jail time, urine monitoring..alcohol counseling..ignition breathalyzer.. nothing seems to stop them from driving drunk until they kill and then prison stops them.

Years ago I read abt. a judge in Ma. who sentenced a multi-year offender to live next to a bar (or a liquor store, I can't remember which)..the theory was that the man was going to drive after boozing.. period, and that he should just live next to the booze so he wouldn't have to get in a car. I never did hear how the experiment came out, or if it was challenged in court.

Maybe Ms. Rodeman could move next door to her buddy's bar.

Totalitarian governments don't always suddenly swoop in and take the citizens' rights away. Totalitarianism can slip through the back door and subtly take our rights away, one at a time, until we wake up one day and realize they're gone.

Peyton Place West. Sounds like a lot of corruption going on there for a long time.

It would seem that with the woman's long substance abuse/arrest history, this was a long time coming. On the other hand, from reading the comments in the Pilot it seems the officer isn't too well thought of either.

I'm not familiar with the law, but it looks like it comes down to two things: 1. When a person doesn't heed the officer's request to stop, and runs into their house, does the cop need a warrant to enter?

2. Is it true that the woman was on the floor pleading for mercy BEFORE the cop tasered her?

in Denver rids parks of homeless meals; charity says DNC is to blame on The Colorado Independent
Piscean, I think you hit the nail on the head.... without the medication the mentally ill need (and the medical supervision, bloodwork, etc. that psychotropics require), they can't stay off the street, so the program does them no good. I wonder if Denver's "Road Home" is aware of that (?)

I'm very sorry for your situation, the cost of prescriptions is outrageous. I wonder if pharmaceutical companies didn't spend so much money advertising they could lower the cost considerably.

I know of a person who was severely injured, unable to work, and had a number of health problems and could not afford the prescriptions..she said she contacted the drug companies of the needed medications i.e. companies like Pfizer or Merck or whoever (I don't know which companies) and found some plans for people who couldn't afford the meds and was able to obtain some medication free.

Have you tried that?

I tried to find an expensive prescription med for a college student whose insurance co. would only pay the generic, (and the generic didn't work) and was unsuccessful finding a free program on that one med though, but it still might be worth a try.

I'm so glad you have a family to help, but it's a shame the State of Colorado can't help you out instead.

Neonnurse, loved the photo trip down nostalgia lane.

I injoyed the statue of the pioneer women also.

My grandmother was one of them, my grandfather homesteaded a few counties south in 1908.
