in Dear Robert Scoble, No. Sorry. on The Really Mobile Project
The vast majority of the population in the US does not own a smart phone. Most people buy phones because they look cute or their keypad lights up in pretty colors. Up until a couple of years ago, there was limited choice in what you could get from the network providers, as most phones here are locked to their networks.

Yes, the iPhone has introduced many people to a robust mobile experience. But it has also introduced them to terms like "jailbreak" as they hate the restrictive and expensive plans forced on the by AT&T, not to mention the restrictions of where they can get their apps from.

But that's all most have known in the US - what they were told. From my own personal experience, even the most novice, non-technical mobile phone owner uses SMS, MMS and wonders why Americans have to throw out a phone when they switch providers.

Interesting how there has been no mention about Motorola, whose last innovative device was the StarTac.

Ben Smith I believe it's about 20% of phone sales in the US are smartphones. I can't find a no for Europe to hand.

in New Tricks: Does a re-tweet on Twitter equal an endorsement? on Old Media, New Tricks
Why does anyone say anything? How many times have you (or anyone else reading this) said something, and then when asked why you said it, you didn't have a clear answer?!

A retweet can be an endorsement or it cannot be. I retweet to pass something along to others from someone whom they may not be following. In some cases it is an endorsement.

Honestly, this is the most I have thought about RTs since I was first introduced to it!

in YouTube is Not the Internet but She Has a Point on Chris Brogan
It's getting to the point where we all will have to host our own content and provide the tools to embed them, etc., and use sites like YouTube to merely promote them.

in Airlines Need to Get Sneaky on Chris Brogan
In other words... ensure Congress does not bail out the airlines, let them fail and die, and let people who are actually human beings and not corporate robots restart the airlines!

Otherwise, nothing will ever happen...

in Google Launches AdSense for Feeds- Breaks My Subscriber Count on Chris Brogan
I "lost" half of my subscribers as well, but unfortunately this has happened before, and they will probably be back tomorrow. Well, that's what I hope.

As for Feedburner being here in Chicago, from what I hear on the mean streets of the Windy City most all have either left the company or moved to the GooglePlex. Most of Google's office here in Chicago is sales.

in When Google Owns You on Chris Brogan
This is a perfect example of the need to own your own domain name and have your mail go to an address with your domain name, rather than to gmail.com, or any other service. By doing so, if something like this happens, then you can change the DNS to another service.

in You Need to Be Easy on Chris Brogan
Great list Chris! One thing I would add for business cards is a little white space, so people can write notes on who you are, and what you talked about when you met.

And if you use a service like OvernightPrints.com, make sure you don't get the UV coating as people will never be able to write on your card. I learned that the hard way...

in How The Boston Globe Could Improve Their Website on Chris Brogan
As a former Bostonian, I always felt Boston.com was a few cards short of a full deck from day one. I never liked the fact that they didn't open up their archives, plus "registering" never gave you anything. And when it started, their tech coverage was horrible to say the least.

Unfortunately this is the mindset of old media. Fortunately the little newspaper in my new home of Chicago is starting to truly embrace new media - look for Colonel Tribune on all the social media sites!

Hey guys... I agree with you charging admission for PodCamp, as having skin in the game in general makes a difference. John may recall similar discussion around the Boston Jaycees' board table on this in the past.

Have any XXL shirts left? I'll buy one!

Is LinkedIn a resume? I have had the (un)fortunate pleasure of seeing hundreds of resumes as a hiring manager, and the most basic information on a LinkedIn profile looks much better than most resumes I have seen.

And today, where any due diligence includes Googling a potential candidate, LinkedIn will show high on search results and by default contributes to their resume.

So where LinkedIn may not be specifically a resume by definition, it can be considered one and should not be discounted as not being one.

I am loyal to the Palm platform and own a Treo 680... but I see no need for the Foleo. I already own a notebook that I sync my Treo to, and I am sure most all others who own a Palm-based smartphone also have a PC or Mac.

Interesting approach on distributing the ISO fiel for the music CD. I have only encountered this once with the Ubuntu Linux server, and had a problem on one PC and had to burn it on another. It was a long download, and my preference would be songs ala iTunes.

Come to think of it... the M O C theme sounds like something that could have come out of Vivid studios... ;)

in MySpace Bots, Black Hat and Politics on Marketing Over Coffee Marketing Podcast
Excellent talk about IT and Marketing. In smart environments, one respects and acknowledges the other and knows when to engage the other. These tend to be smaller, agile firms as the larger ones cannot see as there are giant silos around them. This culture has to come from the top and be woven in the org to be successful. If a company or firm is still using the term "webmaster" they most likely are not agile.
