in Promoting Vs Relationship Building on Jacob Morgan on Social Media, Technology, Marketing, and Life
Hi Jacob,

Similar to your topic, I was inspired by The Drama 2.0 Show's post today and added more about "being used' in social media here:
http://blogs.gcigroup.com/fineprint/2008/11/21/...

I think on the one hand it's very cool that companies do want to engage their customers, but you're right -- it's not a case of "here's $5,000: get me into social media for two months and make me $10,000."

Promotion is a bit like coffee -- you get the quick hit, but once that wears off and people are demanding more, then you better make sure the pot is full for a long time after.

Cheers,
John.

jacobmorgan good analogy with the coffee :) it's true you can't turn off conversation. it;s always on whether you want to be a part of it or not. there is not short term 5k fix it's a constant relationship building process.

thanks for reading and commenting john!

in Automatically follow people on twitter with twollow. on smeesh
Hi Jon,

I blogged about Twollow here: http://blogs.gcigroup.com/fineprint/2008/11/20/...

Although not my preferred method of following people, I'm curious as to how the keywords are distinguished, or are the phrases "catch-all" for a string of words?

Please can you post a reply in the comments section of my post for others to read, or tweet me at johncarson and I'll post it.

Many thanks and good luck with your endeavours.

in Should Every Outward Facing Employee Have a Web Presence on Chris Brogan
On the other side of the coin, Chris, sometimes when I mention someone on my company blog I then link to them on their blog, Twitter or LinkedIn account to give them some appreciation. But then I think: "Maybe they don't want to be linked for some reason?"

It can be a scary thing for all those incoming eyes for people who aren't used to it.

Cheers,
John.

Hi Danny,

Timely, and totally agree. You may be interested in the same question I asked yesterday -- must be a nightmare for the HR departments.

in There's No I in Social Media | danny brown on danny brown - social media pr and marketing

in Social Media Myths on Jacob Morgan on Social Media, Technology, Marketing, and Life
A great list Jacob, glad someone is being the voice of reason.

You missed one: don't believe a social media "expert." -- We're all still learning this game every day ... try specialist, evangelist, consultant ... not expert.

I posted about this a few weeks ago: http://blogs.gcigroup.com/fineprint/2008/10/08/...

Cheers,
JC.

jacobmorgan thanks john,

ah great extra myth to add in there, and that is very true (i mean false?) saying you're a social media expert is like saying you "know" people, well nobody is right 100% of the time :)

thanks for reading and commenting John

in The 5 Critical, Current Responsibilities of a Social Media Expert on Social Media Explorer
Nice post, but I would advise against using the word "expert" so much. The scene changes so fast = no one knows it all at any one time.

Maybe advocate, specialist, advisor, consultant are more realistic terms?

KatFrench From a philosophical standpoint, I agree that the word "expert" is a hot button. I prefer "strategist" myself (and I've used it in the post).

However, from a search engine standpoint, I want to make sure that people can find the content--and "expert" seems to be the most popular term.

in Taking the "Me" Out of Social Media on The Social Media Marketing Blog
Nice post, Scott. But you do have to include an element of ME in there too; the fact that you picked up on this subject means it has affected YOU, right? (Scott: "Hmm, how does this subject affect ME as a person?")

Hope you get the point I'm trying to make!

Expanded on it here a few weeks ago: http://blogs.gcigroup.com/fineprint/2008/09/10/...

in Plan Your Audience Acquisition Strategy on Chris Brogan
Hey Chris,

I write my PR company's blog, and love it. But -- I always argue with myself about whether I should write for my audience (and therefore lose my identity) or write for me (be true to myself) and trust that the posts are interesting enough for people to link to or comment on.

I have seen a steady (not meteoric) climb in unique visitors since re-launching it a few months ago, which is a good thing.

Anyway, not sure what I'm trying to say here(!) but other opinions on how to position a company blog are very useful.

Thanks!
JC.

in Write Your LinkedIn Profile for Your Future on Chris Brogan
Nice tips, Chris. I've been a big fan of LI since it started and also use it also to connect to people I don't know, but who I'd like to know.

My tip is to update the "What are you working on?" box frequently. It has helped me get a lot more views on my profile.

in Why Are You Investigating Social Media on Chris Brogan
I dived into social media on a personal basis a few years ago. I like communicating with people, and, because I'm quite an impatient person and get bored quickly, I like the immediacy of it all. I can blog about someone and they can respond within minutes.

Then I used my personal blog to find a job; that opened my eyes even further.

Now, I work for a PR company and we offer social media strategies as part of -- not the be all and end all -- our services to clients. It's great to be immersed in this world as part of my job, and I love keeping track of who is doing what, and with whom.
