in YouTube Now Mutes Videos With Unauthorized Copyrighted Music on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
How about this as a
crazy compromise: if
they detect
copyrighted music,
they mute it but
give you the option
to either certify
that you have the
rights to use it, or
they let you
purchase a license
($1, sent to the
copyright holder).

They could also
automatically create
a link for viewers
to purchase the
music.

Let's call it "IT". Maybe it will be "as big a deal as the PC" and cities will be built around it. I just hope it ends up being better than a scooter.

in Why would I possibly want a Kindle? on odd time signatures
Yeah, I don't really get it either. The only advantage I can see is it can hold *lots* of books, and if it is searchable that's always an advantage. But the DRM totally kills it.

In the end I'd rather have an iPod full of audiobooks.

Ha! I do that same dance - the kids love it (especially after seeing Walking With Dinosaurs).

@vangeli: you raise a good point, and perhaps I was a bit harsh. It's a judgment call - if I think the comment is sincere AND it adds value to the conversation, I usually let it through. But personally I hate the scent of spam, so I don't feel too guilty about erring on the side of deletion.

"I Am Legend" is a great book, so I'm hoping they don't screw up the movie. I have a soft spot in my heart for the previous version "Omega Man" but hoping for something better.

in How Blogger is Blowing It on Chris Brogan
Wordpress has a very powerful templating language (otherwise known as "PHP") which allows you to do just about anything. Unfortunately, that comes at the price of security.

Keep in mind when you're trying out that cool new theme you downloaded, it could be running arbitrary commands or phoning home with your passwords. I assume this is why the free Wordpress.com doesn't let you edit the templates.

But don't forget - too much bacn can be unhealthy: it can lead to an enlarged head.

in Making Social Networks Work on Chris Brogan
One thing that Flickr does well is "bundling" your notifications. A few examples:

"Recent activity" shows me the comments that have been left on all my photos.

"Comments you've made" shows me when someone else has replied to a photo where I have also left a comment.

"Photos from your contacts" shows me when one of my friends has posted a new photo.

So rather than having to subscribe to multiple feeds (one for each of my friends, one for each photo where I want to track comments, etc.) they are bundled into feeds based on the task.

Good advice all around, but I would add one item that applies to all of your points: be sincere.

Even if you have an agenda (job networking, promoting your blog or community, etc.) don't make that the only reason you're sending email, leaving a comment, and so forth.

For example, I have a blog page (and this is a bit embarrassing) about Paris Hilton getting in a car wreck: http://literally.barelyfitz.com/2005/11/28/lite...

I occasionally get comments on that post, then I notice that the commenter's URL is something relating to car accidents. Even if it's a "real" comment, I usually just delete it because I know the person just searched for "car wreck" and wanted to get some Google-juice.

And for what it's worth, Eskimos don't really have all that many words for snow: http://itre.cis.upenn.edu/~myl/languagelog/arch...

Sorry for picking nits, but I have something of a love for language: http://literally.barelyfitz.com/ :-)

in 2007/07/27/rss-mixer/ on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
I wonder if this has some kind of API. I don't have a lot of use for it, but it would be cool to offer some options for others subscribing to my feeds.

For example, have a checklist of feeds: my flickr photos, delicious bookmarks, blog entries (maybe by category), etc.

Then after choosing the feeds you want, a single RSS button to dynamically generate the custom feed.

in Adobe Reader 8 shipped on Scobleizer
The new simplified UI is nice, but it's still such a bloated monstrosity. I'll stick with FoxIt reader since I don't really need the advanced features.
