Looks like great fun! Say out of curiosity how much would the barest, most basic airplane R/C set up cost?

Are you still doing gliders? Or just powered flight these days?

There's a terrible pun in there about 'detonating' or 'blowing' said suspicious package too...but you were probably restraining yourself right Ben :)

Ben, are your 3G issues because of your device? Or because Vodafone's 3G network in New Zealand is a f*cking joke? Hard to say.

I've spent the best part of 6 months at work trying to get a fancy mobile client running happily in 3G on a Blackberry device in a 13th floor office IN the Auckland's CBD. You'd imagine the GPRS/3G reception is good yes?

I've never seen any of my devices go above 1-2 bars (that's a handful of various Blackberry devices, a Win Mob Treo and an iMate JasJar) and on a good day I can sustain TCP/IP over a 3G connection for around 12-15 seconds tops before it either flakes out, or gets negotiated down to GPRS, resulting in inevitable wierd freezes and drops in the device's TCP/IP layer.

And this is with a PHB that expects sub second latency on the mobile TCP/IP connection.

Ah good times, good times.

Top stuff man, do it!

Personally I think there's a fat bastard trapped inside each and every one of us trying to get out. I'm about 7kg overweight at the moment myself. Thanks largely to stress induced by a shitty work environment (with a snack box two steps away from my cubicle) and general borderline depression induced apathy.

I've never actually actively stuck to anything fitness wise, but try and do stuff I enjoy (which is why Martial Arts are generally a good way to stay trim for me). There's a mixed Tae Kwon Do class twice a week like a minute down the road from our house I've been meaning to check out since the start of this year. Not to mention I could (if I could ever get out of bed in the mornings) jog around Cornwall Park. I managed to motivate myself enough to do that a handful of times last year and it's a lovely run early morning.

That's enough talking about it! I'll go for a run tomorrow I swear!

in The Penny Drops - iPhone on ARM on Ben.geek.nz
The iPod is also driven by an ARM processor of course. So there's a good chance Apple have simply leveraged whatever OS runs the iPod onto the iPhone.

I'd love to know what the CPU is. Surely it's an ARM, surely 'running OS X' is a bit of marketing hype. For starters it's got to be a tweaked version of OS X for the mobile and the UI is totally different (touch screen instead of a mouse) so most people are going to have to re-work their UI's at least.

And yeah, UI responsiveness will be very interesting to see...

There's no 3G because that would make the device considerably larger, both because of the chipset and the additional power requirements (bigger battery). 3G coverage in the US isn't that great either, whereas 2/2.5G is.

I found it interesting it's running OS X. That's not a smartphone OS, that's a desktop OS. Did they mention what kind of processor it's got on board? I missed that. Must be some kind of low power IBM/Intel thing surely. 4 hours of talk time isn't that sh1t hot either imho. You'll have to charge this device every night, or every second night at least. Be interesting to see how the battery life actually pans out in the field particularly with that great big backlight screen.

The use of a full screen interface has been coming for a while, all cell phones will do this soon I believe. However it does raise some concerns about how easy these new devices will be to damage (remember the iPod Nano screen issues) considering you take your cellphone everywhere and it's usually exposed to quite a bit of physical abuse.

Even so. It's a fucking sexy looking phone (pardon my french). I'd buy one in a snap, although I'll have to become a Free BSD developer to write mobile apps for it - which is a good thing I guess :).

I look forward to hearing of the first mugging victim who is forced to hand over their cellphone and pago PIN number. At least banks and cashflow machines are generally located in well lit and/or high traffic areas.

But surely you'll have to crack it out of the box at least ONCE to check everything is there and in good working order?

Did you get the exhaust back together as well. Cool R/C car I must say, and it did do a cartwheel before coming to rest didn't it?

I guess one advantage of plastic suspension (apart from cheap replacements) is that it's likely to fail in one place and protect the rest of the components. Whereas a more rigid metal suspension would bend/buckle and transfer force all over the show? Maybe? I dunno.

in PS3, Thy Name is Gigant0r on Ben.geek.nz
In fact I'll wager if you take the motherf*cking huge brick of a power supply you get with the XBox 360 and laid it next to said XBox 360 and THEN laid the PS3 on top (where it rightly belongs) you'll find they're roughly the same size.

Naturally I reserve my comments about the case design :|

There is NO way that thing has an external power supply. The original release Sony console products have *never* had an external power supply, only their later 'mini' or 'slim' versions.

The original Playstation and the PS2 have simply 'jug cords' supplied. The PSOne and the PS2 'slim' devices have external power supplies.
