Yes, I hear that Wang Shangxin has a restaurant of some sort in Singapore and has started to teach traditional Yin style baguazhang... Might be something to check out!

Wang Shangxin is the fourth son of Wang Fu, who was a disciple of Yin Yuzhang (Yin Fu's fourth son). Wang Fu was one of the old great masters of baguazhang in Beijing, back in the day, so if you like Yin style baguazhang - you may not find anything more traditional, at least! (Wang Shangxin appeared in some VCDs that his older brother Wang Shangzhi released a few years back.) Sounds like a great opportunity to me :)

Hi,

There is no doubt that using a 301 redirect is the best way to let the search engines know that you moved some pages within your site or that you changed your URL altogether. As a word of warning though, we changed our URL about 8 months ago. Before making the change we were receiving over 8,000 visits per month from organic searches. The week after we made the change that had dropped to less than 500. We lost most of our rankings and it took us over 6 months to recover the positions we once held. This is not to say that 301 redirects shouldn't be used, but only to let other readers know what they should expect when doing so.

Being 65 myself the thing I notice is the accelerated pace of change. My grandfather was the first person in his neighborhood to own a TV. I will guess that within 10 years, for the majority of Americans, our telephones, TVs and computers will all be one device.

Technology that gets invented today will likely become obsolete in as little as ten years.

By the time I learn the latest cool thing it's not.

What I like most about you decorations is that each represents a memory. They speak to family and friends.

Your manger scene is so beautiful in it's simplicity.

Your decorations speak more to the true spirit of Christmas then all the lights at Rockefeller Plaza.

I am going to guess that Riley would give St. Nick a hard time if he came down your chimney, unless he brought some prime quality dog food.

I enjoy reading your blog because you have a gift for making the stories of your life come alive.

Your canvases would make a great gift.

After my mother died, when I was thirteen, and my father worked three jobs, seven days a week, to pay the bills, gift giving pretty much went away.

The only gift I can remember from my childhood was a model of my boyhood idol, Hopalong Cassidy on his trusty horse Topper. It came with a "Hoppy" dinner plate. I eat dinner off of that plate every night until I left home at 18.

The only family I have left are my five nieces. We adults don't exchange gifts. The best Christmas gift is watching my niece's children open their presents. The gift of joy on a young child's face.

Joni Mitchell is one of my favorites. I love her paintings as well as her singing. Especially her cover of the "Both Sides Now" album.

Tootsie expresses her artistic talent with the lens, Coop with his drawing. Although Templeton the Cyborg does look scary. I hope it isn't based on anyone he knows. It does look a little like my ex-boss. :)

You are exactly right, it's how we say something that counts a lot more than the words we use.

Kids learn what body language, and facial expressions, mean very quickly.

I think of the old western movies where when the bad guy insults the good guy. The good guy says, "Smile when you say that!"

I think it is the same with dogs. You look for the tail wagging, not the the "Woof!"

Man, you had to start my craving for ice cream. I haven't had any in the 11 years since I was diagnosed as a diabetic, type two. I could eat about a spoon full but why bother. I use to have it every day. Maple walnut was my favorite. Of course maybe that is why I developed my diabetes. :)

Sorry to hear about you headache. Gift and migraines are two words I don't expect to see in the same sentance.

If there is a "wreck havoc" virus we may both have it.

Being diabetic I have to restrict the carbs I eat. Once a week I treat myself. Tonight I decided to treat myself with a Freschetta Spinach & Mushroom Pizza. As I was taking the pizza out of the oven the phone rang. I turned and dropped the pizza on the floor. Bending over I strained my back.

A few weeks ago the lock on my mail box broke. A simple 5 minute job. Thirty minutes later I broke the new lock trying to fit it into the mail box slot.

A few years ago I had to buy a new TV. I had to order a new, bigger, stand to put it on, online. When it came I was thrilled at how easy it was to put together. When I placed my TV on the stand the whole thing fell apart and broke the screen on my new TV.

For some reason my friends never call me for help in moving or fixing anything.

I think a difference between us is that you say yes, and get it right. I say yes, and after falling flat on my face a few times, manage to survive.

I did have to be a substitute speaker at a business conference and, to this day, I have no idea what I said.

I grew up with zero confidence in myself. To get by in life I had to develop my ego. Of course then I went overboard into arrogance. I have spent the last part of my life trying to seek a balance.

What a beautiful antique piano. Playing it would be a great workout, plus you get to re-live some memories from the past. Maybe you can teach Riley how to pedal it.

Lawrence Welk was the only TV show my step-mother would watch. I remember Welk dancing the polka on the show. That is a great workout, and probably one reason he stayed in such good physical condition for so long.

In Rhode Island we have the Plymouth Rock. The symbolic rock upon which our Pilgrim ancestors first step onto what would become America.

From Matthew 16:18 we read that Jesus said to Simon Peter, "That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."

Then of course we have all the rocks people say are rattling around in what passes for my brain.

It is in our minds where we either build a wall to close off life, or a foundation to support our faith. The physical location of our bodies is often a product of circumstance, not design.

Whether we live in a mountain top, a shore front mansion, or a one room cabin, we see the world through our hearts, not our eyes.

Does Riley understand this seasons final episode of Lost? It is beyond the level of comprehension for my poor human brain.

Have you ever wanted to play the accordion? That would be quite an achievement!

We already know how adorable Riley is. Maybe next time you cut his hair you could give him an afro, although that might alarm him.

He is such an all-star that even the Almighty would be proud to have him as a friend. However I am not sure you would describe him as an angel.

In an alternative universe Riley might be complaining about how much he has to clean up after you.

Did you ever audition for a part in a play? It would be very annoying if you didn't get the part.

My poor ancient brain has run out of ideas. You should have enough ammunition already to come up with an artistic post.

I am also interested in Bible passages, or quotes from any books, that help you deal with life. I know you use your favorites for your canvasses. Do you consciously seek out a particular verse, depending on your mood?

Do you brew coffee or tea with your meals? Which is your favorite blend?

Of course seeing Riley in a black bandanna, which would really bring out his bad self, or perhaps even a babushka, would be neat. Don't tell him, but I think he would look as cute as a button.

Do you ever get him any bacon flavoured dog biscuits? Does he like blueberry pie from the bakery, made with lots of butter? Make sure they don't burn the pie.

I am going to guess that Riley may sometimes acts like a bully, but he is never a burden. I know he shines a lot of brightness in your life. Does he have any brothers? Does he come from a large brood? He really is your best friend.

Bravery, beauty and brains are the three best words to describe you. Now I am starting to babble.

I hope you find the right combination of medication. You really must teach Riley how to type.

I prefer handmade because each piece, canvas, is it's own unique work of art. The fact that is was made by a friend makes me appreciate it even more.

I can't think of anything that has happened recently.

When I was first diagnosed with type 2 diabetes I was concerned about all the foods I would have to give up. The truth was that most of these foods weren't very healthy. I am now in much better shape than I was 10 years ago. I have found healthy food that taste better than what I use to eat.

I also had to give up alcohol. I don't miss it in the least, and now think back on all the money I wasted on it.

When I retired I had to cut my budget. No more buying new books. I discovered the library and it's now one of my favorite destinations.

I am spending a lot less money now and enjoying life a lot more.

I am a hypochondriac who is afraid of going to see a doctor. Who might confirm that I do have whatever diseases I saw on TV, or the Internet, and now have the symptoms of.

I enjoy being around people, NYC is my favorite place, but also love the personal freedom of living alone. Sorry Riley, not pets allowed in my condo. :)

If I could afford it I would seriously consider having cosmetic surgery to remove the bags, now more the size of suitcases, under my eyes.

My two favorite movies are the 1990 horror film Tremors, and the 1950, Alastir Sim version, of Scrooge.

Have you been to any place exotic, the Everglades? If you could travel would you like to see Europe? Ethiopia? or maybe visit the Eskimos in Alaska. That would be expensive.

Eureka, I have another question. What is the best music for your ears? I know you have eclectic taste. Elton John, Elvis, Emmylou Harris, Eric Clapton, ELO, Emiliana Torrini to name a few.

I was wondering about George's personality. He is something of an enigma. Do you see him as easy going, an extrovert, effervescent, surely not egotistical. Have you thought about making him electric. I am sure he would embrace that.

Put a little hat on Riley and he might look like an elf. He certainly has had enough escapades to win an Emmy.

The elegance of your post demonstrate your education. It is something I wish I could emulate. I love reading them in their entirety.

All your rooms have a warm, inviting, look to them. I love the wood tables. The antique piano adds the perfect touch to the room.

The decorating gene is clearly feminine, and turned off in most guys. I have lived in my condo 20 years. All my furniture is in the places as when I first moved in. I could live in a cave as long as it had a bed, TV and PC.

Riley does have a cute nose. How does it feel on a cold winters night? :)

I think coconut is one of those foods you either love or hate. Having a "sweet" tooth, not good for a diabetic, I love fresh coconut milk. Almonds on the other hand are one of the few nuts I don't like.

Do you think Riley can sense how sick you feel. Does he act differently depending on how sick you are?

Setting goals is important. It can help motivate us to push our selves. We if achieve all our goals then we are not setting them high enough.

You post points out the key question, which is what you do when you don't meet a goal. Not meeting a goal simply means you have learned more about you own capabilities, which will change over time.

I don't know anyone who has had to deal with more changes in their life than you have. The fact that you are continuing to set goals tells me how much faith you have. Its faith that keeps us moving forward over every obstacle life puts in our way.

Thank you for teaching me more about the importants of faith.

This reminds me of the lawsuit in the European Court of Human Rights between Luigi Cascioli and a parish priest in his town over the existence of jesus.

Mr. Cascioli has a set of balls to attempt this in Italy of all places. Hopefully it won't get tossed out on a technicality.

You are asking a big question!

I am definitely not a soccer mom, and I do like the idea of making the internet ever more universal and easy to understand, but fundamentally I am skeptical of the whole community friend acquisition syndrome. (What is the sense in striving to have thousands of online friends? It is like counting stars! ) There needs to be more selectivity. Less is more.

If you think that the buzz words of the future are going to be stickability and engagement, what is the point in accessizing the massive amounts of what is tantamount to pointless drivel created by thousands of shallow friends saying "hi love your site" before flitting off to the next "in" social site.

Somehow you need to encourage users to slow down and build quality relationships. While a central profile would help, it would be more of the same, if it launches people off into a quagmire of info.

Why not test also the 150mm version, which adds a little more travel and also uses the 15QR. I’d like to know how much stiff it is compared to the 140mm 15QR, and see if the 10mm more won’t make it a little more susceptible to torsional load than the 5.5-inch version tested above.

But I totally support the new standard over the current 9mm QR. Many are arguing about it, but it’s not here to be compete with the 20mm TA. It’s an evolution that is very welcomed to our current trend of XC/Trail/AM bikes which demand stiffer and more reliable forks but remaining light or adding little weight. And it’s an open standard, so any suspension, wheels and hub manufactures can use it and don’t have any problem with legal stuff at all.

Although I think it won’t hurt RS Maxle Lite, it may give an option for those who think that 20mm TA is overkill and demands heavier hubs or wheelsets (but to shut some mouths, Mavic is releasing next year a version of the Crossmax SLR with 20mm hubs), but we can’t tell for sure how it will impact the market right now - but I do hope for good. But try to remember they are trying to replace the current 9mm QR for some types of riding (Trail/AM/Agressive Trail/AM) that demands more strenght and stiffness and not 20mm TA, which will ramin king among the FR and DH people, because it’s still the strongest and most common standard used right now. I may hint that the current 9mm will still be the number one choice for those running pure XC or XC race, so all the standards will probably live happily together.

Dear people in the coast guard, or readers who otherwise know these answers or have unique perspectives pertaining to the answers of said questions,

First of all, thank you so much for answering this, and for posting this on your blog!!

Here are the other questions I wanted to ask. Some of the answers I have an idea about but I know I likely don’t have the whole picture. I realize that many of my questions are leading a bit, but I guess that will make it easier for you to pick out the places where I am woefully misguided so as to better .

What is being in the coast guard like?

Are the officers who come out of the academy by and large douchebags compared to those who become officers some other way? (I had heard this but I dunno if its true, it could have been some whiny person)

When first entering the coast guard, what are you likely to get assigned to? (for both officers and enlisted)

After your first assignment do you get much choice in what your next one is (or rather, do they consider what your preferences are)

How is it decided who does what training?

How much do you get to listen to music while you do stuff?

What is an “emerald shell”? (this may just be a thing with one particular boat, I dunno)

What were your different duty stations like?

Which one was your favorite?

What makes a good officer?

What do officers think makes a good officer?

What do enlisted guys think different than that?

Do you think they are right?

Is your favorite color chrome? (studies have shown that chrome is the best color, so if it isn’t already you should make it your favorite)

Is there much paperwork is there?

How much pointless paperwork is there?

How much is “hurry up and wait” a factor in the cg?

What do the different people in the different jobs do?

What do you do?

If you could change one thing about the cg what would it be?

If you could change 10 things about the cg what would it be?

If you could name someone else’s dog or kid, what would you name it/him/her?

What is the coolest place you’ve ever been? (Ever)

What is the coolest place you’ve ever been? (in the cg)

What is the coolest thing you’ve ever done? (Ever), (in cg)

Have you ever gotten to blow something up, or destroy something in a particularly striking or satisfying fashion in the coast guard? I would think that a lack of opportunities to do this would be one of the major drawbacks to being in the cg compared to say, the marines, who get to blow stuff up all the time.

A few weeks ago I was hiking with a group of people that was about half male and half female; we stopped for a long period by some cliffs; and it was very rocky. After a little while, the guys occupied themselves by dropping stuff (mostly rocks and chunks of ice) off of the edge, while the girls sat and talked. Do you think that this reflects something typical to all people, or just the fact that me and my friends are rednecks and like throwing shit off cliffs, especially ice, which we don’t get much in GA?

There are the standard pay scales, but I know there are also other supplemental pays and pay bonuses for various things, what are they, and are things like BAH enough?

Do you like being in the CG?

Are you going to stay in until retirement?

Are there CG doctors, and if so is it possible to get them to pay for med school?

Do you know anyone who has come into the CG through CSPI? If so, Could you put me in touch with them, or give them my email address??

What do you do during the school year with CSPI?

What do you do during the summer with CSPI?

Have you traveled anywhere cool with the cg?

Can you get SA flights with the other services?

Is it hard to have a pet in the cg?

On a base, do you ever have a base dog or seal or something, that lives on base that the people stationed there take care of? When my father was in the navy, at one point he was at a base where they had a base alligator named Arpo that they threw expired meat to, and later a seagull named Morris McGillicutty who they had for a month or so before he came to a bad end when some idiot microwaved him. They threw that guy out of nuke school cause they didn’t want someone who would fry a live seagull working around nuclear reactors.

Does it suck living in barracks, or is it good, or is it a mixture of both?

What is the funniest thing/something funny that’s happened?

Would you tell me a cool sea story?

Have you personally, or have you ever seen anyone else, sing a sea chantey, while at sea or while drunk in some seaside pub?

How do people form other services think of you guys?

Is there a de facto glass ceiling for many officers as far as promotions go and do most billets suck once you get past Lt?

How do promotions go in the cg (for officers and enlisted)

Do you think the cg values their enlisted personnel more than the other services (from the internet it looks like they do, but though the glorious internet knows many things, it has been known to give false impressions from time to time.)

What are the other people like in the coastguard?

Are you glad you joined?

What are civilian responses/reactions like when they learn you are coastguardsmen? Do any of the annoying anti-military folks go after the cg as well?

Do enlisted personnel get to do cooler stuff? I get that impression, but then again I suppose if you were an officer you could be like “I order you to stand down and let me do this cool thing”, although they might frown on that.

Do you wish people in the coastguard could grow beards? (you could have different units all having different styles, like, men from the Rush would have huge chops, whereas men from the Alert would have huge Wyatt Erp-style mustaches, etc)

How long are mustache whiskers allowed to be?

What are the drawbacks to being in the cg?

What else should I have asked?

What are the answers to those questions?

Since you tipped me to this post, I'll reiterate what I commented at the Four-Eyed Technologist:
Perhaps the organizers should plan to spend early March at South By SouthWest Interactive. Those conference sessions were by and for builders, and they covered the gamut of concerns: from Java and Ruby coding to customer service to monetization to publicity to usability to typography to values.

Of course, anyone can tune in to the 2007 sessions today...via iTunes. Since I'm purposefully not at NECC, maybe I'll take in a couple more.

Me too have sometimes the experience that a couple ordered their album 2 years after their marriage. Strange as if this may sound, but this is because of my upselling tactics. At first they had reserved a smaller amount of money for their album, but after seeing their images on their website and some e-mailing. They wanted a bigger and more pictures in their album. Sometimes doubled or tripled their original budget. There is no sense in pushing them if they simply don't have the money on that moment in time, because all the expenses they have already made. They have to save it first. I don't want to push them either and let them make promises and find out later that they could pay the order on time, resulting in legal mumble jumble and angry clients.
I totally agree with the fact not giving them any prints or digital files either. For me this is simple common sense.

The idea to show them an album and not the separate images could be very effective too. I think I will try this out next year.

I was suprised to see my little (little for California: 100,000 people) town featured in treehugger. I am anxious to see the plan move forward and hopefully serve as a great motivator for others in the area. This has historically been a very traditional and conservative town (not simply speaking politics). There are several strawbale homes in the area, but I am excited to see an alternative construction method being accepted by a wider audience. Hopefully this will pave the way to make it easier for those in the city looking to build homes in a manner other than the ubiquitous stick built box covered in beige stucco.

Thank you for posting your picture. You have a beautiful voice, now I can see your face matches your voice.

When I look in the mirror I would be happy to see any hair, curly or otherwise. :)

Vanity has been one of my biggest character flaws. As a teenager I use to spend way too much time in front of a mirror trying to get every strand of hair in exactly the same spot, with some help from Beryl-cream. Now I can polish my dome more than comb it. :)

You are right that having a family, with kids running around the home, even if it is the White House, does make it easier to relate to the Obama's as another American family. The thing we see is how much love and joy this family shares.

It must also be very cool to have a limo, with special agents, bring you to school. I kinda doubt any of the school bullies with bother them.

Our bodies will test us, all of us, at some point in our lives. It's the spirit within that helps us overcome these test.

I remember watching a video of the physicist Stephen Hawking, who has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which has left him almost completely paralysed, playing with his three children, chasing after them in his motorized wheel chair. His body has completely failed him, but his mind can still generate ideas, about black holes and such, that is well beyond what the rest of us can even imagine.

Being an atheist I see the source of this spirit more in the chemistry of our minds. Whatever the source, we all need it to overcome the failings of our bodies.

Reading you blog, and looking at all the great pictures, is one source that feeds my spirit.

I just love the picture of the two little girls. What a great smile you had even back then.

I can tell you the moment I stopped being gullible. One day when I was 7 or 8 I was sick. When the doctor came over, yes they made house calls back then, I was afraid he was going to stick me with a needle.

My mother told me not to worry and relax, and then he stuck me with a needle. I swear it must have been a foot long. :)

If you talk to my ex-girlfriends they might tell you I am someone who spins crazy stories. Don't believe them. I have never told a lie, honest.

Now I have some swamp land in Florida I'd would like to sell you. :)

When can we expect to see your video on YouTube?

A great thing about living close to NYC is that I have had the opportunity to see so many great singers and groups in the clubs their.

I haven't been to many outdoor concerts but did make it to "The" concert, Woodstock. The Who, Santana and Janice Joplin were incredible.

Listening to the music was great. Being dirty, muddy, hungry, high on pot, and sleeping a car for three days was not so great.

It is one of things were our memories of the event are a lot more fun to relive then it was to actually experience it, at least for me.

I agree the two songs sound similar when we listen to them back to back.

When I was a teenager I would literally want to crawl under a rock when I did something that made other people laugh at me.

Over the years I have had so much practise at doing dumb things it no longer bothers me. I just pretend people are laughing with me and not at me.

Regarding the red blob known as Alberta. I believe that the Alberta Energy & Utilities Board has implemented (and enforces) the strictest regulations on reporting spills & releases, no matter how small. If there is fluid on the ground and it is not reported and remedied, the companies involved can face fines and restricted operations.

Knowing this, what is the rest of the continent NOT reporting. What are they hiding? Should we be concerned?

OK, isn't this painfully obvious, though? If you've been in SF you've likely seen bikes on the front of buses because they're on the front of the bus! It's not a secret.

As for CalTrain, one ride will show you that a lot of people put bikes on there as well. The trick is to put a tag on your bike showing your stations so people know if they can stack a bike on top of it if they're getting off earlier.

I have a 13 year old daughter and I really feel bad for Victoria. I have been really down over this and I want to let Victoria know that I am on her side and will support her any way I can.

I was picked on my whole childhood and when I got older I took up karate and weight lifting and back in my home town no one would mess with me.

I would love to train Victoria in martial arts some day. I would love for her and my daughter to be come friends to show Victoria that ther are grils you can trust and ther are good young girls out there.

Now she feels she cant trust anyone and lives in fear. Those girls are lucky so far I know they are all going to jail.

In jail they are going to beat and rape you and no is going to help you. When and if you make it out of jail you will nevre be able to fit in and get a real job. On every job application they ask ever convicted of a crime and you will always have to say yes to that.

May be you can be a hooker in vegas but that runs out too. Prision is a great place for you girls.

THE ISSUE: Joe Birkett, DuPage County state's attorney and candidate for lieutenant governor, is investigating a business deal involving a company of which his cousin is president.

WE SAY: Birkett needs to recuse himself from the case. Regardless of his intentions, his family connection raises questions about the integrity of the probe.

Read the following three sentences and ask yourself if something is amiss.

DuPage County State's Attorney Joe Birkett's office is investigating the process under which the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority awarded leases to the restaurants allowed to set up shop at the tollway's oases.

Birkett is a cousin of a man who is president of one of the restaurants in question.

According to state records, Birkett owes his cousin's company $100,000 in campaign loans and has received more than $37,000 in direct contributions from the company and $2,000 from the cousin's family and from a business associate of another person at the center of the tollway probe.

Is something amiss? We say so, and we hope you'd agree with us. Joe Birkett doesn't seem to think so. And that's something you voters might want to keep in mind when you go to the polls this year.

Birkett is running for lieutenant governor in the Republican primary. He has aligned himself with front-runner Judy Baar Topinka, who is seen by some observers as having a legitimate chance of unseating incumbent Democrat Rod Blagojevich.

But if Birkett is exercising this kind of judgment in his role as state's attorney, one has to wonder if he merits serious consideration for statewide office and the faith that Topinka has placed in him.

Daily Southtown reporter Kristen McQueary detailed Birkett's relationship to the parties in question in a story Sunday. Birkett is a cousin of Phil Mesi, president of Subway Development Corp., operators of Subway restaurants. As part of its probe, Birkett's office is examining whether the selection process of Subway and other restaurants at the oases was fair and followed state bidding laws. A federal investigation is also under way into oases restaurants owned by Tony Rezko, whose partner, Daniel Mahru, made two campaign contributions to Birkett. Rezko also has made campaign contributions to Blagojevich, as did Subway.

Birkett said the $100,000 loan from Subway for Birkett's unsuccessful run for Illinois attorney general in 2002 is a debt to a family member, "not a loan from the company." In our opinion, that makes the Birkett-Mesi relationship appear even chummier. Whatever you call it, it seems to us that Birkett needs to recuse himself from this investigation.

Birkett tries to sound well-meaning when he says he launched the probe after hearing questions raised about the contracts awarded to the oases restaurants. But the fact is, Birkett is related to the president of one of those restaurant companies. And although the investigation, which is separate from the federal probe, is being handled by three of Birkett's assistants, those assistants still answer to Birkett. Perhaps Birkett can get the Illinois attorney general's office to pick up the investigation from here or turn over information his office has gathered to federal investigators. Obviously, the tollway restaurant deals need to be investigated, but Birkett should have no connection to those investigations.

Regardless of how upstanding prosecutors are, citizens need to be assured that the officials they have entrusted to investigate possible wrong-doing within government have absolutely no connection to any of the parties involved in the investigation. It's basic good government, and if Birkett cannot see that, voters may want to remind him on election day.

Oh look it's Lee Goodman. For those of you who do not know, this is the joker who ran against Kirk in 2004 and got absolutely slaughtered 64% to 34%.

I watched your video, Lee, and besides being appalling poorly made, it completely misses the point. He was at that event to show his support for the humane society's campaign to end animal cruelty, specifically internet hunting. I'd say that is a worthy cause and many in the 10th district would agree with me.

To directly address the question, the 10th district is not in play. Mark Kirk is a very strong candidate and he has won the last two elections by huge margins, 69% in 2002 (http://www.opensecrets.org/races/summary.asp?ID...) and 64% in 2002. (http://www.opensecrets.org/races/summary.asp?ID...)

In this current election cycle he leads Dan Seals almost 3 to 1 in terms of money raised, and his visibility is far superior.

Well guess what, Kirk can afford to have those meetings because he has raised three times what Dan Seals has. A large part of it from individual contributors. That speaks volumes about his support in his district.

Furthermore, I looked at your link, bored now, and Kirk is ranked 226 in terms of power in the House, hardly the lightweight you make him out to be. It also speaks volumes about his regard in the House that he was given a seat on the appropriations committee so quickly. The only reason he doesn't rank much higher than he currently does is because by House standards he is still fairly junior.

You're right, voters in the 10th are smart. They are well informed enough to see the Democrats' flogging of the Iraq issue for what it is, a political smoke screen, an attempt to win by bashing the other guy rather than persuading the voters that you could do better. Furthermore, voters in the 10th district will realize that George Bush is not running in 2006.

Voters in the 10th are also smart enough not to be single issue voters. They will look at Kirk's phenomenal record on environmental issues (he was awarded the arctic medal of courage by the Alaska Coalition for his steadfast efforts to keep ANWR from being drilled), his constant efforts to improved education (He has been given an A+ by the NEA) and his staunchly pro-choice stance (he has been endorsed by Planned Parenthood).

So thank God for smart voters in the 10th.

Nobody can say that the Lake County GOP has outdone the Dems in the last few years, and Mark Kirk and his supporters know that."

Oh really? Have you by chance looked at the poll results and compared the amounts of money raised in the 10th in the last two congressional elections? Mark Kirk and the GOP have absolutely destroyed the Democrats. If those last two elections were examples of the 10th district Democrats really trying then I would say that Kirk has nothing to fear.

And the trend looks only to have continued this year. If the Democrats in 10th district are so much more motivated and impassioned than the Republicans, then why has Dan Seals only raised a third of the money Kirk has? I thought he was a strong candidate in a Democratic district that is trending even more Democratic. Shouldn't his numbers and Kirk's be reversed by your logic?

The last two races weren't serious? I agree that Lee Goodman was and is a joke, but Hank Perritt raised almost $500,000. Don't tell me he wasn't trying.

And while we're talking about money, the fact remains that while Seals has raised more money than Mark Kirk's previous opponents, his available funds are nothing compared to what Kirk has raised. That sends a clearer signal about how the race is going than anything else.

Kirk would campaign no matter what. Hell, he campaigned when Lee Goodman was running against him. It's only prudent. But the fact that Kirk is and will continue to campaign does not change the fact that he is hugely popular in the 10th district.

So let's just run down the checklist here. In Kirk's favor we have:

Massive money advantage
Massive name recognition advantage
Incumbency
A voting record that is largely in line with the feelings in the district
More endorsements than you can count

In Dan Seal's favor we have:........ummmm.....wait wait, i'm getting something....OH YEAH, some people might confuse Mark Kirk with George Bush.

Yeah, i'm really worried about Kirk's prospects.

Cassandra, you are LUCKY to get to ride the Green line. Remember that the tracks, signals, switches were completely rebuilt back in the early 90's. I'm always shocked how fast trains run on the Green line the couple times a year I end up riding it somewhere. My red line commute home last night from Jackson to Berwyn, a distance of roughly 7 miles, took 1 hour. The reality is the two busiest lines by far in the system, Red and Blue, have entire branches that are extremely slow and are in dire conditions which cause delayed trains and other issues which negatively impact service. For every "normal commute day" on the Red line there are three days that consist of some sort of delay, slowdown, major overcrowding, etc. Things are so bad on the far North Side that several station's roofs have collapsed and are now held up by temporary sheet metal or wood. There are also several viaducts over busy streets that are shored up by steel beams.

At what point does the governor's stealing from capital to operations result in a horribe accident such as a station collapsing or a bridge giving out? Certainly his crafty ways with funds cannot continue for another year as Tom Cross pointed out might happen.

The political situation is so sad that if CTA had raised fares a small amount to try and cut into the deficit, it would just cause Springfield to lessen the amount they are willing to add in permanent funding, essentially wiping out any effects of a fare increase now. Sad, but true. Its all a game to see who wins. Downstate Republicans are very shortsighted and rather myopic if they can't see the real numbers of the amount of money the CTA pumps into Illinois' economy and the resulting tax dollars generated. I say we find a way to really stick it to 'em next year. Every man for himself, I say lets do it. Let them see how their districts do in fact depend on the financial stability of the Chicago area.

I grew up next door to a girl that suffered from retardation. She went to a "special" school, on a separate bus. Her parents hardly ever let her outside, even in the yard - I used to wonder what it must have been like to be her Parents, with the challenges they faced. They were always pretty secluded as a family - there were only the Mr & Mrs, and the daughter. I wonder if they were in "Holland".< />< />The real challenge, as I see it, will be when she does run into that bully - you'll probably have some sinister thoughts, I'd imagine....
