If I create an application with an iFrame is there a way to create the invite and news story functionality?

Yes - for invites, you can use the Bebo invite page instead of the snml control. Just have your link go to it as I do in the example above. For news stories, it is just the API call, so it doesn't matter if it is from an iframe or fbml page.
