This is a subject very near and dear to my family. My athlete father was taken ill in 2002. He's worked hard is entire life. And now due to a heart condition and lukemia my family and I struggle to take care of eachother. Our health care system is broken and corrupt. Between the drug companies and their lobby, health of the citizens of this country is NOT what comes first. Personally I believe both the Clinton plan and the Obama plan are steps in the right direction. This idea that everyone should take personal responsibility for themselves that I keep hearing from the GOP sounds all well and good, until you take into account a broken system and have some compassion. The US talks a good game when it comes to being leaders, but to me a leader doesn't leave it's sick or it's poor to fend for themselves. Instead of having a nation that provides basic health services to it's people, we're a nation that turns its back, let's a survival of the fittest war ensue, and grants special favors to the heathcare and drug companies that give it the most cash. To the Phil Windley's of the world I offer this: healthcare is not cable tv and your slippery slope argument is weak, at best. Tell my hard working father, to his face, why you believe he's unworthy of heath insurance. Why his government shouldn't help a citizen who contributed to the system his entire life. I dare you.

Sigh. The thing is, whites are everywhere and our voice is the norm for everything-so is the white on the panel really needed? I mean, American culture is white culture-

But for a second here let's agree that so long as we're all having this discussion and educating one another, we can make progress. Which is what I *think* your post boils down too.

And I think it's fair to say we're all prejudice. We all pre-judge. But I'm not sure I buy that we're all racist. That being said I can be very naive.

There are a million people I'd love to say STFU too, but I refrain. Well, that's not true. Mostly I refrain and sometimes I just get so pissed off that I use all caps and type it or yell it anyway.

But fair enough, sure...everyone gets a voice.

You've been getting hung out to dry on a lot of this discussion and I've been defending you, god help me. But I think it's because you truly realize the need for TOTAL honesty here. Not to mention the opportunity we all have to make some REAL break through. I may not always agree but I love that you're not holding back. The abrasive stuff tends to rub me the wrong way sometimes, but on the flipside I do it too-I'm just pissing off an entirely different area of the blogosphere.

I have to say, I wish I saw more this type of honesty in my own communities.

Bu the larger point here - he is using his influence in social media or on the web as a whole and it's enough to garner cash...yes? So while operating in that space-why not consider other ways in which to use that influence?

Here is a community (I use that term loosely) that has JUMPED at attempting to buy his account. Why aren't they JUMPING to buy health care for women and children in nepal or jumping to provide birthing kits and doulas? In a fund raising effort LARGELY IGNORED by the tech/sm community?

Everyone is buzzing about the money involved in selling a twitter account and discussing community and followers. Seems awfully shallow as they ignore the money, community, and followers involved in the blogher initiative.

I get my love of sports from my family. It was always a 'family' activity. I was a rink rat, a pond princess, and a baseball orphan when my brother's career took off at 14. I played basketball, softball, hockey, and football in the street with neighbor kids on Sundays.

Hockey Night in Canada's theme song is like...comfort. Folding laundry on Sundays with football on in the background is just what you do.

I think that's just a healthy dose of home and love to know and follow a team-at least for me. I'm glad to hear your roots and your teams really do 'mean' something-because it makes all the difference!

Sharks still suck. ;)

Tish is onto something...

I find it one thing to create, evolve, launch applications and start ups that are inspired by and for the community-BY the community...and another when it's someone just trying to grab a piece of the action.

I got so tired of hearing about how to write for good search results...how to utilize keywords, etc. I want to know I'm reading someone not bought and paid for. I want to read because you are engaging, exciting, and just plain GOOD at it...

I feel I have to be very careful these days with my associations, my affiliations, with my links even.

Maybe it's like anything else in this world? Growing pains of success? The good will weed out the bad in time? Or maybe we become two totally separate entities-those involved and in love with the community and those only there to capitalize. So we adjust accordingly...the conferences and unconferences offer the money tract and the writing tips.

Don't get me wrong, I was at BWE with a start up who offers a monetization platform, but I'm involved because I am making them give my community what it needs to survive this new wave of popularity. With it comes the threats and bad seeds affecting how my parentblogging community blogs and does it's thing. I make my startup give that monetization platform a donation option, so our Beth Kanter's and BlogHer's Act survive as well.

I think the corporation side of our industry is emerging in full force and I've chosen to make it work FOR my community and make it work FOR the ideas many of us started out with-and FOR solutions to keep us doing what we do in as pure a form as we can muster.

I have so many things to say here I'm not sure where to start. Part of the problem, which I talked about in my post, is the fact that the corp's fit us into their box, not realizing that box doesn't exist.

They see a big target on the demographic and pitch without rhyme or reason.

As for dropping the Mommyblogger title, I flat out refuse. Women talking about and discussing their children online got labeled Mommybloggers long ago and it was not a term of endearment. They assumed we were pithy and uneducated and that discussing potty training was not nearly as important as discussing politics or tech. We were ignored.

You can call me a Mommyblogger or a blogger who happens to be a Mom, I don't really care but identifying with our community via that name is really not the issue. Nevermind most of us are discussing our kids only 1/2 the time.

And finally, because I could go on forever here-most of us did not blog as a means to get famous or make money. It was and still is about community and a hobby. So it only makes sense that when dipping our toes in the web waters we didn't know if we should be throwing our full name on a site or if we needed to do more to NOT put all that info out there. It also gave us a tone and identity for what we thought we'd be discussing. This space has changed dramatically since I started blogging and now most of us are 'queen of spain, erin kotecki vest' or what not.

As for the 'protection' of our kids, you really don't want to get me going on that. There are sickos who look at my children at the park and at the store-but we still go out in public.
