in Case Study: Google Services Too Good, Making IT Departments Shrink on Bob Caswell
My school is looking into doing the same thing, and they should because our current email system is worthless.
The point of technology is not to create jobs. If we got hung up about jobs every time there was some form of progress that eliminated jobs we'd still be using the telegraph instead of the cell phone and the ice box instead of the refrigerator. If your IT job is not needed anymore then it's time to move on. And hopefully you know more than just Microsoft Exchange Server.

in Social Content vs. Big Media Content: Do You Have to Pick a Side? on Bob Caswell
As long as a portal can generate a sense of community, it will be successful. Digg has been successful so far, but the trick is keeping it up.

in The Rise (or Fall?) of In-Text Advertising: Is It News…or Is It an Ad? | Bob Caswell on Bob Caswell
I wasn't going to say anything, but since you brought it up with this article here we go... The WSJ has the right idea in not wanting to "interrupt the reader's experience." But right between the 2nd and 3rd paragraphs of this article is a set of Google Ads. Now you might argue that that is "prime" advertising space, but I would counter that interrupts the flow of the article, and I am hardly in the mood to click on an ad when I am in the middle of reading an interesting article. So by placing ads in the middle of an article you are in a sense saying, "Don't worry about finishing this article. It's really not worth your time. Just go ahead and click on that ad instead." So which speaks louder, your ad placement or the words around it? Just a thought.

in A Beginner’s Guide to Community Driven Web Content | Bob Caswell on Bob Caswell
I would love to read your thoughts on what Digg should do next to stay ahead of the competition. A first mover advantage can disappear fast if the competition is more innovative and gives users more of what they want. (In this case that would probably be links to articles that are interesting to certain users.) One example is Reddit's built-in recommender system, which makes it easier for users to find articles they care about by suggesting new articles based on other users with similar viewing habits. Do you see Digg moving in this direction? Do you see any drawbacks to adding an optional feature like this?

in Why Advances in Technology Are So Frustrating | Bob Caswell on Bob Caswell
We expect new technologies to be at least as good as existing things. Interesting obsetvation!
