in My Experiences In Web Design: Part 1 on High Tech Sister
Thanks for commenting, yeah I can see where you get that from the design. But that was just the structural design. The initial graphic design I just implemented in GIMP is a has I different feel based on textures. I'll be posting about it soon and will be documenting what coding issues I come across. And yes, the theme will be chopped around wordpress although in the future as a project I would like to get it running on my own set of scripts.

Thanks,

KJ

in A Good Comic You Might Not Read Already on The Simian Downtime Analyst
I hadn't heard of Questionable Content before but from quickly looking at the site, it looks pretty neat. You seem to like comics and webcomics, so I was wondering if you have checked out http://www.freakangels.com/ by Warren Ellis? I don't like the story as much as I like the drawing. But it is a pretty cool comic overall.

Amber S Ok. I am checking out freak angels....it is pretty. It screams anime-ish right away, so I will have to check it out in depth later.

in MyBlogLog on The Simian Downtime Analyst
If you use MyBlogLog and/or BlogCatalog, do you find them to be good social networking tools? I don't know, all these social networking tools still boggle my mind and I never really catch on to any of them. Perhaps it's just social ineptitude on my part, and I'm not well suited for these types of applications.

Amber S MyBlogLog has quite a few communities to work with, its just difficult to do alot due to the UI. Most of the traffic I get from MyBlogLog is not from networking from the site, but from widgets on the blogs I have visited. They see our crazy looking name and logo and have to see the weirdo that visited their site.

in Impressive Argument Against OpenID on The Simian Downtime Analyst
I like the article. I also read Warpspire's reasons for not using OpenID. Your post and his made me rethink some of the lectures I attended in college, I remember back in college that the words "pervasive" and "ubiquitous" were the computer science buzzwords. And that was all I thought they were at the time; buzzwords that would be replaced the next year by new ones. My assumption seemed to be correct at the time. But now "social media" and "web 2.0" are the new buzzwords and they do not seem to be going away anytime soon. And to me these buzzwords are eerily similar to pervasive and ubiquitous computing. Everyone wants multiple ways to be interconnected. I think solutions like OpenID naturally lend themselves to this type of distributed social networking environment. I agree that the implementation is not the best, but as more players enter the scene the better implementations will rise to the top.

Amber S We can only hope something better comes along. And we have to hope its not Google taking over the world.

in This Is For The Cuil In You on The Simian Downtime Analyst
I agree with you that lack of search results is definitely not playing in their favor right now. However for the keywords that they do have a fair amount of search results for such as technology and programming, the contextual matching is absolutely mind-blowing. I can't wait until they are farther along in development. It seems to me that if the cuil development team can actually pull off what they promise, they could bring about the much needed search engine revolution. I think everyone is ready to look at the search engine in a new way.

Amber S Well as stated in the post, I hope they get better. I also hope the same for the folks @SearchMe.

in Bloggers On Vacation on The Simian Downtime Analyst
I was wondering do you find Twitter to be an inherently good social media app? I've tried to get into it but don't find it that useful. The only thing I currently use it for is updating blog posts. But that is probably not that useful either if you don't have followers. I guess to me it's kind of like screaming into the wind. How do you use twitter?

Amber S At first I just hated the idea of Twitter. Then I decided to stop being so hateful and sign up for Twitter. I followed some people, got bored and dropped it, angry with the hype. I started reading a couple of blogs more often that were about social media. Those convinced me to give Twitter another chance along with the fact it was integrated in Digsby. Since its connected to my chat program, it updates my status thru that and Twitter kicks it to my facebook. But I also use Twitter to reply to other Twitter stuff in Friendfeed.

I find Friendfeed much more interesting than most of the other stuff around.

Thanks for the comment. I think I'm sort of going in the direction you are suggesting. I have some other blogs that I am working on, I just wanted to shift focus of this one slightly while still staying in technology.

Thanks,

andrezero,

The /home/andrezero/firefox/plugins/npwrapper.libflashplayer.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64 doesn't bother me because that some error sometimes appears when running a dual core machine. However I don't know why you are getting the LoadPlugin: failed errror. The only thing I can think of is if you have firefox installed in both your home directory and elsewhere on your system, and/or firefox is trying to call a broken or nonexistent plugin. The default directories to install the plugins are /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ and /usr/lib/firefox-addons/plugins unless your installation is different. I do hope you eventually get flash working.

in Firefox 3 + Hardy 64 bit + Flash + Imeem Working! on High Tech Sister
Hi,

Well flash seems to be a give and take on 64 bit hardy. I think my install differs from other installs because I wipe all existing flash, nspluginwrapper, and link files out manually to make sure none of them are left behind to cause problems. I am not certain, but the problem you describe with the video starting then freezing seems like it could be caused by some files left behind from a previous install.

I do believe the install route I took was simpler because I compiled it myself and copied the flashplugin manually to the directories that needed it.

None of the nspluginwrappers are perfect but I believe for my purposes, the nspluginwrapper 1.0.0 was a little less buggy than the one that is packaged with ubuntu. Also as far as the flash/nspluginwrapper combination is concerned, for me the older flash player 9r48 combined with nspluginwrapper 1.0.0 was the most stable on my system. Other versions of flash crashed on various websites.
