Most Asians still have a horribly distorted belief that girls should be skinny as a rail. A girl's size Small in the U.S. would probably be a size Large or Xtra Large in Singapore. A woman with a completely normal BMI in the U.S. would be considered fat in a lot of East Asian countries. The stigma is huge, and I don't really see it going away any time soon.

I understand what you're talking about with size portions in the U.S. and fast food and so forth, but I don't think obesity is as big a problem in Asia as the unrealistic expectations of beauty.

Re: Mister Wong, the Offensive Social Bookmarking Portal

The problem with calling an entire race "honorable" and "proud" is that it somehow implies that other races are not as honorable or proud. Does that mean they were acting white even when they were back home in their Asian majority countries?

This reminds me of when people used to act so surprised when I tell them I'm not American...

Re: [Lee Kuan Yew] Modern Singapore’s Creator Is Alert to Perils

Thanks silverkris; I was about to post almost exactly the same thing.

Re: Top 15 Sexiest Asian Males, As Rated By the Women of 8A

I can't believe no one has mentioned Lai Meng. Frankly, I think that whole show is entirely scripted... she speaks in such a monotone, like she\'s reading off a teleprompter. The father wanted her to date an Asian male, and the guy he chose was the absolute opposite of the asexual nerd stereotype. Buff Asian male hottie, in other words. The whole show was cheesy as hell and totally disgusting, but it was still interesting to watch in the guilty pleasure kind of way (For one thing, I'm shocked how the Asian parents were completely accepting of the idea that their daughter has had sex in public(!)).

PS. I swear I don't watch MTV that often and was just supremely bored that evening.

Re: Top 10 Reasons Why I’m Twittering Again

Okay, number 1 cracked me up :)

Re: Rob Huebel

you make me weep.

Re: Stop freaking out over the TV-B-Gone prank at CES

Not to mention it's giving a ton of press to Gizmodo right now.

Re: Ping.fm / Uploaded Image from Nameless

I was about to say your glucose levels are quite high, but I noticed you didn't fast, so that's not really accurate.

Re: Overheard on TV

Yeah, I've received a jury summons letter too, and had to check the "not a US citizen" box. So yes, they ARE incapable of knowing the age, citizenship, and criminal record of the people they send jury summons to. (It really is one of my favorite podcasts).

I was wondering if you guys ever heard of the Shangri-La diet. All you need to do is either drink hot water dissolved with sugar once a day, or take a couple tablespoons of oil once a day (You do this in a 2-hour window where you're not allowed to eat/drink anything else except water). I really have no idea how it works, but apparently this simple act of consuming sugar water / oil once a day suppresses your appetite for more food. Apparently it works on the Pavlovian theory of weight control. My friend said to me that this guy essentially "hacked" the way his appetite works.

Anyway, I haven't tried it, but was curious if any of your listeners have heard of it.

Re: East Meets West 57

Re: gasoline -- I wonder why Americans use "gasoline" as opposed to "petrol." A few preliminary searches on Google didn't turn up any definitive answers. Curious. I remember it was one of the things I had to learn when I moved to the U.S. from Malaysia, like using Fahrenheit instead of Celsius, and the omission of the letter "u" in certain words.

Re: East Meets West 74

It ended just when they were talking about the BlackBerry too.
