in A need for a new blog ranking system on Shooting at Bubbles
Kind of a bummer to see this, because a link from a blog post plus a sentence or two about why, is a lot more meaningful and important than a retweet on twitter or a like on some social site. But it does seem to be the trend.

in The Changing Definition of a Subscriber Points to Potential Over Actual - louisgray.com on louisgray.com
Totally agree. But in an odd way, aren't we going back to where we started? We used to say - put up a web page, theoretically, everyone - anybody with Internet access - can see it. You have a potential audience of billions. But at the end of the day everyone who starts a site realizes that actual visitors is another story. So lots of time was invested with search engines and such to get people to actually visit your site.

Now we have a new "WWW" of Twitter and FriendFeed followers with the potential to visit a site, and cycle begins anew...?

Good one mentioning AT&T as a reason to hold off.

IMHO you got the other two dudes beat, but Veronica is more photogenic :)

in 2012 Movie Trailer on /Film
So now the answer to a question I never had has arrived. How do you top an alien ufo blowing up the white house from above? Oh, you have a massive tidal wave dump an air craft carrier on it.

And now that this question is clearly answered in the trailer - why do we need to see the movie?

in WTF Friendfeed – you may have just crossed the line on Shooting at Bubbles
Thinking about this further, it seems like a ploy for FF to gain more users. Because the payperpost blogging for the money crowd - as soon as they get wind of this way to juice up their Feedburner stats - are gonna take to this like bees to honey.

So FF get tons more users while bloggers are left with an increasingly useless metric that everyone will ignore since it has lost value.

in Problems getting CSS styling to work on DISQUS Blog and Forum
After spending a few hours confused, I finally bent the Disqus CSS to my will.

To sum up: <script type="text/javascript">var disqus_iframe_css = "http://www.my-blog-url.com/disqus-form.css";</script> --> The styles placed in this stylesheet only apply to what's in the iframe. Meaning, only the input textarea and the form fields.

All else (meaning the comments themselves and all the associated stuff), put in your existing stylesheet. Use firebug to figure out what to target, and use !important to override the Disqus stylesheet, which due to its placement in <head>, comes last.

in Should ROI be a consideration in Social Media on Shooting at Bubbles
Well, I think about an example of "aged" relative who isn't very computer savvy. They constantly want to know what improvements will they get in their life from investing the time to learn something new on the computer. Say, will their life be improved in efficiency or pleasure by learning a new skill, which takes time.

This could apply to anything - say fly fishing which I know nothing about - I'm sure it would be really fun once I got pretty good at it, but I'd have to invest a lot of time getting up to speed and getting the equipment, etc.

in Should ROI be a consideration in Social Media on Shooting at Bubbles
I don't see roi in just economic terms - it can be just time vs pleasure. Say spending two hours to watch a terrible movie; that's a waste of time and zero roi. And I think it's totally applicable to social media since they can ask of our time and attention. Many early adopters have no problem investing a lot of time since it's their hobby, but many mainstream users are going to have a much higher expectaion of roi. Early adopters are easy.

StevenHodson A valid point Jason but even with mainstream users what is the return that should be expected? Or are we back to the financial gain (for someone) aspect again? I think that maybe ROI is the wrong term to be used .. not sure.

in The Cynical Bastard Podcast … nobody listens to us on Shooting at Bubbles
Definitely share your experience / thoughts on FriendFeed becoming very clique-y. Am finding Twitter a lot more appealing because the amount of work put in is virtually nil. Meanwhile, on FF, people actually criticize others for not participating enough. How / why some of those folks manage to be on there what seems 24/7 is beyond me...

StevenHodson I'm slowly working on a post to try and put a lot of this into context and provide some reasoning for the way I feel about Friendfeed right now.

in Dinosaur Adobe Manually Reviews Download Purchases - louisgray.com on louisgray.com
Adobe's software is one thing (Adobe updater particularly sucks) but agreed, the stuff surrounding it is lacking in many ways. The work around: I downloaded trials of the programs I needed right away which tided me over for the week, and ordered the actual program in the mail. Which had to be approved as well.

There's an old steve jobs quote - "You've baked a really lovely cake, but then you've used dog shit for frosting."

John E. Bredehoft (Empoprises) I would think that a passionate user would be more likely to turn into a passionate non-user, rather than an indifferent user. But I could be wrong.

in Monster Recession Cables on ParisLemon
I have one monster HDMI cable (stupidly purchased at Circuit City a while back) and several no-name cheapo ones from Fry's and Amazon. Can't even remember which one is where; no difference whatsoever.

That $70 cable was my first and last monster purchase. Still peeved about it...

in On The Kindle on ParisLemon
Hmmmm, thanks for the tip about Instapaper; didn't know that was on the Kindle. But yeah - $360 is pretty cost prohibitive for most folks, especially when you add in all the content you'd have to buy (I can buy a lot of books for $360) - plus the odds that Amazon will surely feel pressure to lower the price of the Kindle with all these netbooks.

If the Kindle were $100 I'd buy one today, until then I can make do with the iPhone Kindle app and just ruin my eyes for a few more months :)

in Having a problem with all this Social Media crap on Shooting at Bubbles
I've been increasingly disillusioned with all things social media. New tools, sure, but it's just being used and abused in the same old ways, since more than any technology, it's reliant on the people behind it to serve any purpose.

My most cynical thought is the "benefits" are being touted by corporations as being good for the user, when really what they're up to is profiting off of our information and cheap labor. The hippie information wants to be free thing only goes as far as getting users on board en masse, then later we all get sold up the river to the highest bidder.

Personally all I use it for anymore is entertainment - a great way to waste time when I need a break from getting actual work done. I don't take social media seriously which means I enjoy it a lot more.

StevenHodson I guess by my questioning post that started this - and more to come - I am much like you Jason - disillusioned with social media - that being the tools and services. But I haven't yet given up on the larger idea of Social Media. The tools don't make the movement - they are just the ways we move through it all. The tools and services can easily be bastardized to make the toolmakers rich I just hope they don't have the power to pervert the movement.
