in Me: Joining the Nieman Journalism Lab on Mathew's comments
Congrats Mathew! This is great news. There's certainly no one more deserving of this than yourself. Cheers!

in JPG magazine: Great idea, bad business? on Mathew's comments
JPG worked because it played effectively to both the print and online mediums. The website and online community thrived and the physical copy of the magazine, with its fantastic print quality and design, was a nice thing to receive in the mail. None of my photos were ever published in JPG but I'm sure that if they were I'd be ecstatic about it: there's something *different* about seeing your stuff in print vs online. That being said, like so many others I ditched my subscription when Heather and Derek were ousted...

I agree, Greg -- there is still something about seeing your stuff in print. And I wonder how many people like you were turned off by what happened with Heather and Derek, and whether things might be different if that hadn't happened.

in Media: Okay, so is it time to panic yet? on Mathew's comments
Just yesterday I was reading about old media's decline at nytimes.com and it made me think two things. One the one hand, I guess I'm lucky to be in Canada because, as you've noted, we've managed to escape the decline (until now at least). But on the other hand, assuming one day I leave my job, or am forced out of my job, where do I go? If old media is falling apart and layoffs are happening all over the place, what's next for people like me -- people in media?
Despite the cynicism and bleak outlook a real opportunity for Canadian media institutions exists: there's no clear online winner as far as journalism within this country goes and someone needs to take top spot.

in Microsoft gets the ad thing right on Mathew's comments
The worst part of these new ads is the Hodgman wannabe: his presence effectively positions them as a reactionary, anti-Apple measure instead of a genuine attempt to reposition the brand. These ads work for the human quality that they appeal to (Chopra's "human being"...) not as a measure against Apple.

I think you're right, Greg -- I think I would actually like them better if they just left the PC guy out. As Whitney mentions in his comment, that feels a little too much like Microsoft is reacting to Apple instead of doing its own thing.

in The Canuck iPhone: Apple doesn’t care on Mathew's comments
Did anyone who signed the ruinediphone.com petition *really* think that Apple would step in and save them from Rogers' pricing? I certainly didn't. The best way for consumers to get around the horrid plans is to just not buy the iPhone until more reasonable rates come to market.

in The architecture of news on Mathew's comments
Like yourself, I totally agree with everything Upendra has to say-- especially the part about navigation being key. Not only can bad navigation hide content, but it can make users feel stupid and at fault if they can't find what they're looking for. And when you make someone feel stupid, they'll generally not want to stick around for too long.
