in Could Twitter’s transcendent clarity trump Facebook? on Dangerous Visionary
Good insight Dale. I also see a separate and longer thread of conversation to my tweets on Facebook. My guess for this is that Facebook's garden is where many of those users simply like to play. Or it could be that Fb status messages are more conducive to friendly replies since a whole conversation can be easily seen at a glance. Also, use cases between Fb and Twitter can be wildly different. Everyone I've confirmed a friendship with on Fb is someone whom I've met in person. With Twitter I'm more likely to add people I've never met, but also more likely to refine my list of people I follow to only those who tweets are interesting to me.

in 2008/09/29/social-media-consultant/ on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
The first clue that "ur doing it wrong" is even the consideration of hiring someone who calls themselves a 'social media consultant'. Don't be fooled by the hype! Social media is such a nebulous non-term that means too many things to too many people. Are we talking about collaborative web applications? Or the interactions between people who use them? Hey, I'm leaving a comment on a blog! That makes me a 'social media practitioner' and if I do it enough, an 'expert'. That'll be $500 an hour please!

Orin: How is this "brought to you by Chevrolet"? I know Doc Pop and he's far from a corporate sell out, which seems to be your implication. Doc is one talented artist, whether he's making music, stitching jeans or printing memes. I don't see any corporate sponsorship or tie-in on any of this.

in Stop freaking out over the TV-B-Gone prank at CES on jibber jabber
Kevin:
I totally get your point, but I don't think the prank quite rises to the level of denial of service. The room is still full of people, the presenter still has the ability to address the crowd (and from what I saw the Motorola guy did pretty well under the circumstances) and the ensuing controversy and press coverage drives more attention and traffic to all those involved. I am now actually curious about what Motorola was demoing. I probably wouldn't have been otherwise.

in Chicken John Loses Race For Mayor, Announces Run For Supervisor on Laughing Squid
Adam: Those are only first choice votes. Most people would have voted for Chicken for second place. If Newsom get's less than 50% of the vote in the first round after all the ballots are counted, then we should see Chicken's numbers shine through. If Newsom get's more than 50%, then we'll never know.

in Matching Funds For Chicken John’s Mayoral Campaign | Laughing Squid on Laughing Squid
Marketa: You make a lot of accusations, but I have yet to see you provide ONE THING to back any of it up. How is Chicken a crook? How is creating spectacles and promoting tons of other unknown underground artists not helping the art scene? How is Chicken manipulative, unethical, unscrupulous and self-interested to a fault? What is this axe that you grind? Is it a one-handed jobbie or do you need both hands to hold it steady against the grinder? Seriously, I'm curious. Convince me.

in Matching Funds For Chicken John’s Mayoral Campaign | Laughing Squid on Laughing Squid
I don't get where all this Chicken hate is coming from? What the hell has he done to merit such vitrol? Other than Josh Wolf, there is NO ONE running against Newsom who has the balls or interest in making this campaign season the least bit interesting. Do we want a boring non-existent campaign where Gavin is rubber stamped into office for another 4 years? This is an opportunity for us to at least get Newsom to address some issues that he'd otherwise ignore. That alone is worth keeping challengers in the race.
How does Chicken undermine art? What makes you think he won't debate other candidates? Are you all Newsom sock puppets? Come on, wake the fuck up and laugh a little. Laughter is cheap medicine and apparently in short supply around here.

in Why can Leo Laporte and Disney do it, but Mike Arrington and TechCrunch can’t? on Scobleizer
The term "conversational marketing" really strikes me as bunch of crap. If what took place in the FM campaign was really a conversation, then where are the countervailing and skeptical voices? Would FM/Microsoft have run an ad by an A-list blogger that said something like:
'People Powered sounds like a manufactured marketing term. I had never heard of such a thing until I was asked to comment on it.'
No, they wouldn't. By being selective in what shows up in the "conversation" makes the whole idea of this as one-sided and disingenuous.

You're right! The problem is that on the corporate side of things, they need a point of reference. The only things they've heard they need is "social media", and a consultant seems the right path to take. Unfortunately, the title isn't a very good filter.
Your overarching point is absolutely what fueled this post, though: there is no barrier to entry and very few ways to determine who's a hack and who's a crack shot. The title is now diluted, and we need to educate people not just on the social media tools, but enough so they can sniff out the "used car salesmen" of our time.
