in twdsc.us: @tigerbeat. "@palafo But @davewiner doesn't seem to understand the New York Times will cover twitter the same way whether or not it is on the list" on twdsc.us
Back in the day when Netscape had a what's cool section, the New York Times was on it and they covered Netscape.

http://web.archive.org/web/19961027043322/www3....

Should the New York Times have requested to be removed from that list (and many others like it)?

in Twitter *kills* Google in real-time search (Scripting News) on Scripting News
This is a really bad test study.

It started at night & continued late into the night.

There weren't many stories for google news to find. Most of the coverage was really bad LA tv news. And some of the channels speculated about the identity of the driver. Speculation that turned out to be wrong.

Most people on twitter were writing about what they saw on tv. Some were skeptical or critical of the coverage, but others just repeated it. This wasn't a situation like in other cases where someone using twitter was an eyewitness.

Yes, news organizations should monitor and participate on twitter.

And saying twitter kills google would be a bad choice of words related to this story even if it were true

Now (2:30 am) google news does show a cluster of stories at the top because there are stories to find. you also didn't use sort by date (something I always use when there is a breaking story)

in Can YouTube even handle movies? on Mathew's comments
Yes it can.

It isn't the best experience, but a number of feature films have been on YouTube including Wayne Wang's latest film

http://www.youtube.com/ytscreeningroom?v=rKgbIz...

You wouldn't want to watch an action film, but it is ok for more character driven films.

in McCain’s Actual Pitchfork Rally on The Washington Independent
The worst part of Arnold's speech was when he attacked Obama for all the money he was raising and said there would be a backlash.

This from someone who broke all CA spending records with tens of millions of his own money
along with huge contributions from corporations.

Plus he should be here campaigning against Prop 8, not in Ohio campaigning for McCain.

in Twitter limiting followers to 2000 (Scripting News) on Scripting News
As more people and news sources start using twitter, it could get pretty easy to start following over 2000 (or 2100 or whatever the limit becomes).

in 2008/07/17/iphone-million/ on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
That is an estimated 282 million phones a quarter.

It that many were sold everyday, there would be over a billion phones sold every 4 days.

I don't think just running an RSS feed through twitter is a good way to use it, but I do follow some news organizations and people who do that.

Partly because I'm interested in how twitter is used in different ways, partly because I'm interested in the content.

But NASA with @marsphoenix gets it much better than most media (NPR and the PBS Newshour are among the exceptions with both staff and the organization participating in the conversation).

in 2008/06/03/barack-hussein-obama/ on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
While the Obama campaign could use online tools better, they still did a pretty amazing job in raising money, getting their message out (which did have a lot of substance) and helping people organize to help him win.

While he didn't write blog posts, he did speak directly to people in hundreds of videos and some of them were seen millions of times.

A NY Times article on his books did say he keeps
a journal, and itt would be fascinating if he posted excerpts from it.

I'm sure his campaign and supporters will continue to innovate. And talked about redesigning the White House website when he is president to help keep people engaged. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyNzC9W2C8Q

Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins You're absolutely right on these points, Steve. These journal posts would have been incredible fodder for the online campaign - at least on one of his social networking profiles, if nowhere else.

I certainly hope that whomever wins the presidency works to make it more engaging and interactive with the electorate.

One thing is for certain - the next campaign cycle won't be nearly as forgiving to folks who run a campaign like Obama as this one. He'll face significant challenge from a field that will actually use the tools. If he decides to run it the same way he did this time around, he'll be quickly surpassed by someone who *does* understand the power of social media (who also knows how to properly shape a message for a primary process Unlike Ron Paul's staff. ugh. i don't even wanna think about how bad he screwed that up).

Yes, it is a false choice.

Jack said they talked to their lawyers, so they paid whatever hours were billed.

And if Twitter is going to grow, they need to invest in both being stable and their community. And I think they realize it better than you do (even if they don't always implement it as well as they should particularly when it comes to communicating with their community).

It isn't as simple as leaving twitter since it is a community and she has friends there who aren't on pounce or aren't as active there.

Anyway, she addresses some of what you wrote better than I can at this hour here

http://arielwaldman.com/2008/05/23/twitter-resp...
Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins First of all, Steve, her latest post goes more towards reshaping her entire argument into the direction that the community has driven it. It's a damage control post, not a post that explains anything you and I are discussing. It certainly doesn't address anything I've raised from the top of this page to the bottom.

Honestly, you and I and Ariel all know that this TOS they have has nothing to do with protecting the user or an agreement with the user. It's strictly there to cover the company's butt.

Getting butthurt over that *is* turning a molehill into a mountain.

And it's not a false choice. If lawyers are consulted everytime someone gets butthurt on twitter, it will chew thru funding quicker than you can say Ruby on Rails.

in 2008/05/23/ariel-waldman/ on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
You're presenting a false choice. Twitter has (or soon will have) the resources to both build a strong platform that will not go down and a strong community.

Ariel has said this isn't about her, but about how her complaints were handled.
Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins Ariel has said a lot of things. This isn't a false choice. Legal advice isn't cheap, and while Twitter, over the course of this matter, was offered a lot of free legal advice, my experience has always been that most free legal advice comes with an agenda, and is usually worth the face price, if not less.

Ariel stated that this was a case of cyberbullying. If that were true, the block button is her best friend.

Ariel stated that this was a case of Google search and reputation issues. If that were true, the aforementioned route in the blog post would be the best solution.

If this was about customer service issues, and I doubt it seriously, then switching to a competitor (like the one she works for) would have been a better solution. When my energy or phone company screws me around, I threaten to leave. If they keep screwing me around, I switch companies.

She's still on Twitter, and the problem was actually solved on it's own (if you read the correspondence) about two months ago. There's either another agenda here on her part, or it's a series of poor decisions to promote this silliness to the level it has reached.

And there were updates while the interviews were happening

Spielberg did mention he is working on some internet projects he can't talk about

http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/digitalcontent/2008...

It was arranged through a movie pr firm

http://www.theppc.com/film/

It would be interesting if Lucas, Spielberg, and any of the others continued to post videos, but I doubt it will happen.

Lucas has said he wants to go back to making experimental films and documentaries.

And Tom Hanks actually makes his own videos and posts them to myspace (and as Spielberg mentioned, they produce programs for HBO together)

While a 50-50 spit is the right thing to do, Obama would lead by the exact same number of delegates which is why the Clinton campaign has resisted it.

And while I doubt Chelsea will ever want to run for political office, she has been the most impressive member of her family during this campaign.

in Flickr Adds New Stats Feature on Laughing Squid
The stats are great, something I've wanted for a while.

One tip is to click on flickr.com under domains to see some really detailed info on how people are finding photos through sets and groups as well as contacts.

Another thing that is pretty clear is people aren't finding collections. I don't have as much traffiic as you, but there is a similar huge gap between views of sets and collections.

It might help if there was some visual representation that a set was in a collection and a similar thing for individual photos.

in The you-don’t-need-more-friends lobby on Scobleizer
Actually flickr did cap the number of contacts earlier this year. I forget if it was 2000 or 3000.

The reason was to try and prevent contact spam. You get that on twitter now too with people (or some cases websites) following thousands of people hoping some of them will follow them back out of politeness).

A lot of people complained and they took the suggestion of one member to make the limit 3000 non-reciprocal contacts.

But I do agree that Facebook needs to raise the limit (even though I only currently have 132 friends) & realize (like almost every internet site) people are using it for different purposes than they ever imagined.

in SF Examiner Uses Photo Without Permission or Attribution on Laughing Squid
Courtesy photo basically mean a photo provided by the subject they don't have to pay for.

In the old days, it was usually provided as part of a press kit with prints that said they could be used for promotional purposes.

The problem is media organzations don't understand creative commons and that they can't just publish any photo they find on the web.

SF Weekly did something similar with a photo I took of Josh Wolf a few weeks ago. They did take it down after I contacted them though they didn't offer to pay me for using it in the first place.
