in Why Gary Francione Is Wrong on Ryan McReynolds
PS - did you see that Bob Torres attacked you?
Torres says, "until we can overcome this barrier of the property status of animals, any reforms we make will ultimately fail to accord animals any true recognition as persons in the long run."
Which, of course, it simply untrue. Reforms can shift public opinion, move the middle, and encourage change. The children of vegetarians are VEGANS.

Minku (called in sick!)
Elaine,
I don't think Bob's reply to Ryan's blog post is an attack. And if anything in it constitutes an attack by whatever criteria you're using, then it follows that Ryan's blog post is an attack on Gary Francione and everyone who agrees with him.
In other words, if you're going to basically accuse whose who agree with Francione as being "fundamentalists" and trying to be "pure", with all of the negative connotations that implies, and knowing that's a pretty illogical argument on its face, then it's only fair to reply by saying you're shitting yourself.
Anyway, I should bow out of this discussion and let y'all continue to do what you do.

Thanks for the comment, Elaine.
I did see Bob's post. The real issue for me with the specific quote you mention there is that even if it were absolutely certain that reforms will fail to accord animals any true recognition in the long run, that failure is not a valid argument against making the reforms for reasons other than according recognition, such as simply to reduce proximate suffering. Whether it will in fact reduce suffering is certainly an open question for each reform, but the fundamentalist position is the same regardless of if it will or not.

Good article, Ryan :)
As I understand it, meat eating hasn't increased. What has increased is a) the population of meat eaters and b) the amount of meat those people eat.
But what's also increased is a) the population of vegans and b) the amount of animal advocacy vegans can generate through the web :)
Pragmatism, in my opinion, is simply the idea that actions matter more than words/thoughts. Pragmatism is NOT "selling out" or "welfarist" or anything like that.
Animal rights pragmatism is simply recognizing the reality that there's more urgency to change humans' habits regarding animals than to change humans' minds. Change the habit and the mind will follow. But keep the habit and the mind will create ridiculous rationalizations to "justify" the habit.

Perhaps you should stick to your entries on the advantages of getting naked for PETA, Elaine, because it seems clear to me that you don't understand much of anything beyond that. To wit:
"As I understand it, meat eating hasn't increased. What has increased is a) the population of meat eaters and b) the amount of meat those people eat."
Logic wasn't my strongest class in college, but I walked away with enough to know that what you say above is a logical impossibility. There is no way that you can argue that "meat eating hasn't increased" while also arguing that both population has increased AND that the amount of meat people consume has increased. If we have, as you say, more people eating more meat, I'm at a loss to understand how you could "understand" that "meat eating hasn't increased."
Also, your idea about pragmatism is ridiculous. This is precisely what veganism seeks to do: to change habits. What the welfarist agenda seeks to do is not to change habits, but instead to change productive conditions. It is sad when I understand the premises of what you're arguing for better than you do. (Then again, this is emblematic of new welfarist thinking as I've seen it.)

That's a good idea to outline your blog schedule like that. I mean, many people figure it out on their own, but it's good to lay it out there for those who don't or just as a reminder to yourself.

Agreed. I don't want it any smaller. I just want it to do some of the things my old phone did: take video and accept mms messages better. Oh, and let me use non-iphone headphones and browse the web faster/ or multi-task and not freeze up. yeah, that'd be nice. But I don't want it smaller. I don't care about that at all.

in Some Favorite Blog Posts Of 2007… On Other Blogs on Webomatica
This is a great idea this "best of 2007" post. I just might follow your lead ;)
By the way, thanks for the link love. I don't think my photos are all that great or my cooking so good, so it's really nice to see that some people think it looks just fine and tasty. It does taste good, I swear. (Especially that veggie sausage pot pie we made for Thanksgiving. Yum!) If you want to see more tasty vegan food from someone who actually knows how to use a camera properly, check out Vegan Yum Yum (http://veganyumyum.com/).
And I just want to mention that some people find it easier to change their diet when it's based on a 'higher principle' like religion or philosophy. I wrote a bit about that here: http://vegansoapbox.blogspot.com/2007/12/vegani...
Are you going to do more "fatblogging" in 2008? I'm looking forward to joining the masses in ritualistic New Year's exercise and diet reforms. My goal is to drop some weight, but mostly to get back to the gym and get those muscles working again. One of the downsides of blogging all the time is the toll it takes on your body ;)

in What’s Up For MacWorld 2008? on WebomaticaiPhone 2: Sounds mad, but Apple might use the standby “We’re far ahead of the competition, so we want to retain that lead” and announce an updated cell phone that addresses some of the complaints people have had. How about 3G, more storage, Flash support, some new apps - anything that will keep the iPhone a hot product in 2008.
If the iphone just had the same capabilities as other phones, I'd be happy. Features it needs:
1. Quick, easy keypad access. To make a call you shouldn't have to do so much. You should just have to unlock the phone and dial. You should be able to dial 911 blind/ in the dark. You can't do that with the iphone.
2. Video. If I can watch YouTube on my phone I should be able to make YouTube videos with my phone.

in Why A Blogger’s Union Won’t Fly on Webomatica
I think a union has a place in a limited context. For example, an organized union could get group discounts for health insurance. And an organized union could boost up one ad network above another or boycott certain ads. A union could have a say in webmaster guidelines, too, for example, and legal help for freedom of the press and copyright law.
It'd be more like a guild or an association than a union, but the principles of organization for group benefit are the same. I think you're conception of union is just a little too narrow.

IE has other weird bugs, too. My site currently loads two totally separate pages for IE or Firefox/Safari/Opera.
And I think Safari has another odd bug (but it could be Opera, I can't remember right now). If you put a link tag around an image, but close it after text, it renders the entire page's link as that link.

I think it's a 'keeping up with the Jones' type of thing. People report being happy with their income when they earn just as much or more than what their friends earn. I see it here in NY too. My husband doesn't feed rich, I do. It's because he's comparing our income with his friends' incomes instead of with average people's incomes.

in So Why Are Americans So Fat? on Webomatica
I think we're getting fatter and fatter because:
1. Unhealthy foods tend to be cheaper than healthy ones
2. Most people don't understand nutrition. Most chefs don't understand nutrition
3. We're exercise-phobic. Not just sedentary, phobic. People are afraid they're going to die if they go for a hike or a swim in the ocean.
4. Too big portion sizes

I really enjoyed both The Incredibles and Ratatouille.

On top of that, no one can muster any evidence to prove your assertion, namely, that public opinion has meaningfully shifted in a way that has produced any notable reduction in overall consumption of animal products. You yourself say that the amount of meat people eat has increased (though you also say that it hasn't increased, so I can't really even hold you to your own argument here).
