I think there is a lot of sturm und drang in the blogosphere, and that that drives pageviews in some cases, but I like to pretend that it's really about the quality of the content :-)

Re: Blogs and the settling of the Wild West

No links allowed in a comment? Here's the part that disappeared: "Michael Arrington is a blind man; the blogosphere is an elephant". I don't. I'm more inclined to believe that <a href="http://blog.blogcosm.com/2008/03/19/michael-arrington-blind-man-blogosphere-elephant/>Michael Arrington is a blind man; the blogosphere is an elephant. ("Kids these days; just don't know their history.") Here's some background: http://productarchitect.com/more1987.html ... AFAIK he made real money selling to Symantec. He also sold Weblogs.com for a reported $2.3M. In between: Frontier was influential in many ways, not to mention all the other things he's had a hand in. Actually, Frontier is an interesting case study: a great product that didn't turn into a great company....

Re: Free Is A Great Way To Make Money

I managed to trackback to your old post but not this one, so here goes a manual one. In addition to spreading the word about proper credit for Freemium, I mention an earlier Josh Kopelman post that deserves attention, plus suggest a book: Robert Rodin's "Free, Perfect, and Now".

Re: Lane Hartwell: Still wrong on fair use

I haven't dismissed anyone. The only FACT is that you, Arrington and LawGeek have weighed in on one side of a complicated legal question, and that other people have weighed in on the other side. (e.g. one of LawGeek's anon commenters raised some very serious objections to the cited cases.)

You may sincerely believe that your critics are "unreasonable" -- but that's all too often just an excuse for dismissing them, as you've done here. Guess what? Many thoughtful people who have real experience with copyright have come down on the other side of the "fair use" question. Or, at the very least, acknowledge that this case is well into the gray area.

Re: Interesting Debate About Times Select

Of course that's possible, but I suspect that the WSJ is an exception since it's considered a "business news" paper rather than "general news" paper.

Re: Should VCs Blog?

Whether or not VC's "should" blog, I guarantee that your and other VC blogs are great resources for entrepreneurs.

(Also, since I didn't see a trackback option I hope a manual "trackback" to my post is ok.)

Re: Al Warms Sells Buzztracker to Yahoo!, Becomes GM Of News

Long-time readers may remember that "Al from Chicago" (Alan Warms) posted a comment here on A VC with a very useful analysis of The Huffington Post raising $5M. That (plus some data I grabbed from Jeremy Liew and Tim O'Reilly) may help explain Why BuzzTracker sold for $5 million instead of raising $5 million. I think it's useful info for Web entrepreneurs.
