Studio One let's you transform a track to audio, and shows there is midi note data still there. You can transform the audio back to note data at any time to edit midi and then then transform back to audio. It's very fast.

I watched Sound City last night and absolutely loved it. I thought the movie delivered in a big way. I enjoyed the insight into the studio, the artists who's careers were ignited there, and the music that came out of it.

The Neve desk definitely has a special place in that story, and without the desk many of those artists would probably never have recorded at Sound City.

Fleetwood Mac, Rick Springfield, and Nirvana were probably the pivotal acts for the studio that brought the other in. And for whatever reason the Neve desk seems to have had a special place in many of those artist's hearts. Kinda cool if you ask me.

Another amazing part of the movie was getting the chance to watch some of these artists making music out of thin air. Dave's full circle moment was about as great a full-circle moment as you'll ever get.

I loved the movie and found it really inspiring, so two thumbs up from me for what it's worth.

I would have loved an email that gave some indication of what is coming with Pro Tools 11. Maybe something along the lines of, hey I'm the new boss at Avid and we're going to support VST plugins with Pro Tools 11. BAM!

This post is 7 months old, so yeah, I'm diggin it up. In answer to your question ARC has made a dramatic difference for my home studio. My home studio is partially treated and not ideal, and ARC 2 has made a world of difference.

Bass buildup was terrible, and now gone. More detail and clarity off my M-Audio EX66 monitors, and listening fatigue is greatly reduced. For those with an increadibly well setup studio you will see less of a difference, but for me the change was shocking.

I've had to route iTunes & etc. through Audio Hijack Pro so I can use ARC with iTunes. I simply don't want to listen to audio through speakers in my home studio without ARC.

ARC 2 was worth every penny to me, and I wish I had done it sooner.

As for the data flow vs overhead you mention, it all depends on packet size. To suffer from 50% overhead you need to be somewhere close to tiny 64 byte ethernet frames, which is not the case. Not even close.

SoundGrid is utilizing jumbo frames, which carry up to 9000 bytes of payload, which have almost no overhead by comparison.

Networking equipment including cat5e and cat6 cabling and Gigabit switching equipment is some of the most tested and proven technology available anywhere on this planet. You can get ultra reliable Gigabit and 10x Gigabit speed over Cat5e and Cat6.

Low latency digital audio over ethernet is also well proven technology, and the numbers listed by SoundGrid are realistic.

Using a dedicated Linux box for SoundGrid is the best possible choice. The entire Internet as you know it essentially runs on Linux, from servers to wireless routers and countless other devices. Linux is a rock solid open source choice.

None of the basic infrastructure used by the SoundGrid system is unproven or untested.

Because this system uses highly available, highly tested, and easy to obtain components the costs will be lower and possibilities much greater.

I have no clue how the plugin format will shake out and I certainly don't want more plugin formats, but the SoundGrid system is much more than a plugin format.

I'd love to know what it takes to make a "SoundGrid-compatible" plugin. Is this a completely new format?

Looking over the details on Waves SoundGrid - http://www.waveslive.com/ht... - I'm struck by the thought that this is they way it should be done.

The SoundGrid system is well designed and well thought out, and quite frankly is major evidence that Waves intends to be the market leader. When so many companies are just trying to emulate old analog gear, Waves is also making a very future thinking decision.

SoundGrid server is a custom Linux box dedicated to and optimized for audio processing, and the entire system uses what is essentially standard networking equipment.

All arguments about too many plugin formats aside, the SoundGrid system is pretty darn bad@ss. If Waves released the SoundGrid server portion as open source this format would rapidly gain traction. And I mean rapidly, as in fast.

I think the app might be misreporting a new version for the Pro Tools AIR plugins, also with Softube and Steinberg plugins, and a few others for me. I submitted a bug report.

I get it. I often think I'm an adult too :)

On the other side, I deal with Internet security issues every day, and the passwords people use to protect their assets online are shocking. You should also see the websites I do from the internals. Many sites have been built poorly and are a hack waiting to happen. Don't assume sites are doing the right thing with your data, credit card info included.

However PluginUpdate deals with the password issue, I'm glad you reviewed the product. Terrific app, and while there are a few things to shake out, I love it. I love the way this site uncovers gems like this.

Russ, I stopped the video when I heard Religious music. I tried starting it up again and just couldn't. I then headed here to make a comment. I wan't surprised to see more comments. Religion is polarizing,

I have a ton of respect for you and your work, and I have to say the Religious music takes away from the message of the videos. Religion is polarizing, it obscures the message of the video, and it's distracting. I'd feel the same way about other Religious music that was non Christian.

It's not about those who have faith and those who don't. It's a far more complex topic. There are those of other faiths. Christianity is one religion out of many. Wars have been and are currently being waged over religion, and many people have been killed.

If the intent is to deliver a great set of videos on mixing and have students soak up that knowledge, I think keeping the music non polarizing would help. You probably wouldn't put music in with F or N bombs, and some people of other faiths might find Christian music just as distasteful.

Keep up the great work. I've enjoyed every other video of yours I've watched.
