Those are wave clouds, which can form over mountains leaving a series of lenticular formations expanding in a triangular pattern from the base at the left. Or, a least ,it looks enough like a similar picture I saw in cloud school to make the guess.

Rounding of the Horn simply to gain cabin space, would seem exactly the sort of situation that could lead to an accident of titanic proportions.

Dear Captain,
Retired from the Fire/EMS service, I now work as an independent Mac tech. I use Parallels on my MacBook Pro for the occasions when I need a Windows app. and it works very well. I have used Boot Camp too and had a true dual OS machine. Right now, I find that the virtual aspect of the Parallels software much more convenient than having to restart each time I need the windows environment.
I have a great interest in all things having to do with merchant shipping and am very glad to have found the gCaptain site. I really wish there were more sites and books about the day to day operations of the deck and engineering divisions. (books like McPhee's Looking for a Ship) The web site by Countryman and McDanial is full of information but it is very hard to read.
Anyway, thank you for having such a great source online for those of us who can only dream about going to sea.
Sincere Regards,
Tomas Texino
