Howdy Scott - been off radar for a while - thought I would jump in real quick and thank you and the rest of the BumpZee folks for keeping that community alive.

I also dig what you said here about the bottled water craze... I'm a tap water man myself - but to be honest, have really been sucked in by the convenience of the bottles... I will join your new years res and try to use a single bottle all year!

So, I was going to sign up with Buy.at today, but their only option was to give them your routing & account number for the affiliate program.

I am a bit uncomfortable taking this step with a company I do not know with an initial program brand I do not recognize.

Bottom line - I decided not to sign up yet because they were asking for too much personal information up front. If they had a check mailing option, or if they let you create an account without some of the more personal information, so that I could get a "feel" for them, I might have been a bit more interested.

I'll take a look at them again in a few months, I suppose.

Similar to this train, we tried to come up with a new way of raising money at Bloglyne through our 1st contest of which we are down to the last 36 or so hours - There have been some great comments and I hope some new ideas which have come about due to the way we set up our contest.

I discovered your blog at BUMPzee! and after speaking with Jangro. He told me to check you out. So far, I am digging your site (that comment has NOTHING to do with DIGG)

I really appreciate a post like this because when I first got into affiliate marketing, I lost my shirt on PPC - you really need to watch that daily budget and what the cost per click is for the words you are bidding on, as well as writing clear and compelling ads.

Keep up the good work! I like your stuff - the one question I have to ask is what ranking were you trying to get by registering your URL??? *grins* that has got to be the WORST URL name I have ever seen ;-) (http://www.sageblogger.com)

Vlad - you have to load the template when you setup your broadcast rss. There is a button underneath the template that you have to click and then you will see your RSS post go out with the articles you write. You can go to my page and subscribe to my service then you can compare my broadcast rss to yours.

This is a great topic - I have found it almost impossible to get folks to sign-up unless you are promising some sort of "freebie"

In order to keep them signed up, you have to build relationship equity with them by providing them with "value-added" services and topics which do NOT sell at every opportunity.

I have started to build a decent list from my agency "sign ups" with the goal of keeping my name in front of them so that when they think about insurance, they think about me.

Which of the above issues do you think you have had the biggest challenge with? I know that I have had issues with more than one, so the article was a good reminder, but probably my biggest issue is Working hard instead of smart. I think this becomes obvious in the length of my posts, but as much as I try to get them down in size, the shorter they become, the more work I put into them... *sigh* it is a huge balancing act.

I think this article is alright, nothing stellar when it comes to the two different type of people Time rich vs. Time poor - however, I did find it interesting when they tried to quantify which types of sites would be of interest to the two different categories of people.

Yeah - I noticed your topics were a little different than when I was last on your site - although, it is good to see that you are still at it.

My new projects may interest you if you have a chance to stop by. I think one of the missing pieces to the whole blog puzzle was also getting a content rich directory service up. This can act as a social network too - which can help folks discover what you are about. Right now, I am focusing on niche directories, because I think there are too many out there right now which try to list everything.

I appreciate the comments from Mark from 45n5 and the article from Jim.

I have been wondering why there is an issue with affiliate links to begin with... If you are providing valid content via whatever site you are creating, why does it matter if you link to the relevant products associated with the theme of the site? Why is it an issue to make money from a site which you are spending time and resources on?

I guess I understand there could be folks who are unethical about the whole practice, but then it seems that they would be shooting themselves in the foot from a long run perspective.

As always, I appreciate reading different perspectives on any issue. But personally, this has never felt like a huge issue to me.

I think I learned a bit today as to why this could be an issue. After I put up that comment I started researching for the article about the GoDaddy article, and the folks who are accusing GoDaddy of bad things have tons of hosting options on their site which calls their credibility into question.

I guess it is for each of us to work out - Mark@45 - I dig your process and didn't mean to minimize your writings, actually, I was thinking about putting something similar to what you have in your About Me page.

I would be interested to find out what the population comparisons were between the U.S. & India along with the number of people who actually have access to computers and the internet.

This sort of thing may impact your numbers and provide you with more relevent data. For example, if only 5% of the population in India has access to the internet and 95% of the population in the U.S. have access to the internet, they you may have a much higher percentage of Indian readers than you think...

In the U.S. we do not have Women's Day, but we do have Mother's Day - what a great idea! I wonder if there such a thing as Men's day, and a similar poem? hrmmmm...

Hey there Ajay - I recently wrote an article about this issue of showing top commentators on the site.

I don't know if I am for it or against it, still working this one out. I don't have an issue with providing clean links from the pages where a commentator shows up, but I'm not sure if there is any "real gain" by having commentators names showing in the same sidebar.php - do you know if these get zinged for the duplicate content?

I think this is an indicator of a larger problem where people are disconnecting on a personal level.

It is an important social skill to be able to handle conflict and still have a positive outcome.

I would not SMS somebody with bad news. But that is just me.

When I launched the site, I was making folks login to comment, but now if I have to create an account to comment, most of the time I won't take the time to do that - so I removed that requirement from my site.

I share the same practice as Ajay - I will moderate new commentators and then once approved they are allowed to post.

However, I still watch posts to see if folks are getting out of line, but I can imagine with a site as large as yours you would have a hard time doing that...

As our traffic grows, it is always good to hear about tools that allow us to manage things with less time invested in the grudge work.

That would be great - it sounds like a new project... perhaps a plugin to "weight" articles over 3 months old... you could set up a new type of social network option like Digg or Bumpzee to have folks vote on the various articles, then have a page with those articles listed by tags... hrmmmm...

Howdy Everton - I am glad to see that you have taken the automated translator down. This technology is a long way off from working correctly, and I do not think it adds any "real" value to the site, other than confusing folks.

I have tried out many different machine based translators, because my wife is Japanese, and I would love to be able to speak to her parents without using my very broken Japanese skills. I haven't found anything that works well yet. But, I'm still hopefull...

I think that Google vastly under-estimated the investment that would be needed to "police" the content of YouTube.

I wonder if the new ventures will make the same mistake? Also, the new guys will need to ensure the "ease" of interface if they want their service to take off.

It would be great to have another option when it comes to online video posting besides YouTube, but, it comes down to the "devil you know" vs the one you don't... right?

It is not only the friggin console which is hopefully a one time layout - but the price of the average PS3 game has gone up ridiculously! If a person buys 3 games per quarter for 3 years that is a total outlay of $2,124 just for games - a little over $500 more than what the same average PS2 game would cost...

One of the things I am doing, which may or may not be helping is that when I go to my site daily with SearchStatus installed, is I click on the traffic rank widget in my sidebar to view my stats - I think I have noticed a 20k improvement.

Alexa says this widget does not do anything to improve rankings, and that may be true just on its own, but I believe if you go to Alexa from a site through the widget with a toolbar app installed, it my help. Don't know for sure, would be interested to hear if others have had the same experience, or would be willing to add this to their experiments.

I simply hate having to call in, I will do everything I can to avoid it. Which is why it is so frustrating when I do call in and after waiting on hold for 15 - 30 minutes that I am faced with having to pay for the support with somebody that doesn't speak English very well.

I know that you mention they have solved that issue, but some large companies like Dell have still not addressed the issue. But that is just my $0.02

Well - Since I fell off the map last June/July my Alexa rank dropped significantly - at one point I was above the 200,000 level, my 3 month average rating now is 1,428,583 - it will be interesting to see if I can improve this and how quickly I can get back up into the top 200,000 again.

@mlankton - where are you getting your stats? According to the stuff I'm looking at Google trades places up & down with Yahoo, and MSN is about two-thirds the volume of both of them - the way I see it this would dominate Google by about 30% - 35%

WP-Ajax Edit Comments seems a little buggy - it flashes are dark line all the way across the browser screen in FF for about 10 secs before re-adjusting to be just above the comment box - it is an interesting idea, but I think it is probably not really necessary... cuz I donut eber missspell wurds ;)

Maybe its just me, but I do not get why folks would pay to receive an RSS feed - I think it could be a PR nightmare for uneducated folks who pay for the feed because they think that is the only way to get one, and then find out that these things are free...

Totally agree with the Vista assessment - but I find myself "time poor" when it comes to everything I have my hands in (which is also why Vista ticked me off... cuz I had to relearn everything). But, learning a new OS has got to be one of those things that is WAAAAAAY down at the bottom of the list of things I do NOT ever want to do - not to mention having to deal with the headaches of finding new office software, etc.

Switching to a unix based system is more of a time/fear issue for me. It is good to hear that you have had a good experience on FreeBSD, but Phil makes my point for me - if we switch over and can't get that one feature, piece of hardware, or software feature to work, then we are faced with the horrible task of switching back - more time consumption with little or no payback.

Have not tried these yet, but I stick by my Bose noise cancel headset - they have worked well for me over the years.
