I was in the overflow room also (don babcock) and this explains why you werent answering any of my questions about why you werent in the main area for CaseCamp. I quite enjoyed casecamp and the overflow room we were banished too. But when the sound went down we all just stood around and chatted. Then someone noticed that you could hit the music button off and on and the sound came back on. The mighty wisdom of crowds.......see you in SL capricia. That is if we both make the random pick to attend. Thanks Bryan I enjoyed the overflow room with my eggnog!

It seems I have the same problem and my wife also has this problem. Cameras, computers, software. We also collect other stuff which makes it impossible to enter our garage. We have resigned to stop buying electronics. Well she did come home with a New Nikon D80...but it takes such great pictures....... :)

I have had many instances of pushing boulders in my life. Each time this happens I make that realization and then I make a change.
Learning for me is the greatest enforcer of a rich life. If I am not learning something new, I tend to fall into the Sisphean ways.
In my head the grass is always greener. But always remembering that you can only control life right now. So enjoy it, but keep learning and looking for new grasses to enjoy.

(Newest realization while writing this--> I sort of live like a cow. :))

This is a great post Chris.
It reminded me of something my dad told me as we were driving into our driveway a long time ago. He said he was worried about me being such a smartass. He himself had been a smartass his whole life and he thought he probably would have gone farther in life and been more successful if he held his tongue more in business and around town

As I was a teenager I remember trying to ignore him and as I looked out the window of the new Lexus we were driving in and the large house in Hillsborough, California we lived in I wondered. "is he being a smartass now? he did pretty good for himself."

Someone is always watching, be yourself and if you do something illegal or immoral then people should know you are an ass. Google just helps that along these days.

I really don't think Mr Cheese normally plays at conferences. Here in San Francisco he plays at the Red Devil Lounge and I heard he has enough of a following to play at Bimbos ( a very cool club) I think it was an oversight and basically Mr Cheese is a comic act. I would say laugh at this. Hopefully like any event you put on you hope no lawyers will get involved. After putting on corporate events for more than 18 years I cant see him ever playing one. not sure how he got in the mix at this show. He misses the point totally. He should have welcomed the video but he obviously does not get it.

BUT -I did laugh my ass off watching him though. Crude but funny. He took me by surprise. I wouldn't hire him but I would go see him again. He is a comedy act.

As for the New Media Expo it was the best one I have been to yet. I encourage you to go to the next one.

As a company we are looking to branch our brand into the social media space. our website is going to have an overhaul this month. We have had a blog for sevearl years but it needs more passion. So I read Jaffes book on the 30 second spot and liked it. He does rail on what a waste the money spent on 30 second spots for the super bowl are. Now it seems with Utube and other video aggregators that these spots have giant legs well after the super bowl. Strange how things evolve in time. Whats next?

My life force is Family.
I was up really late last night watching a movie. It was called Raising Cane with John Lithgow. Not a great movie. The one thing that movie has which keeps me watching it is my Mom and Dad as extras in the movie. My dad died around 6 years ago and it was great to see him alive again if only for a minute. I know its not exactly what you were asking for, but it made me think that my main life force is my family.

Great post Chris. I do have to say I agree with habits. I read a book by Robert Sharma called The Monk who sold his Ferarri which was a fable of sorts. It talked about the same thing, forming habits to make your life better. After stumbling on this book I kept notes and did a small podcast of reminders for myself that I listen to. (I put all sorts of new age music under it - I smile every time I listen to it) So after reading this book, in the past year my company has tripled its business, I have forced myself to do things that scare me like I have been boxing, welding, just living and loving harder. I do think there is no big recipe for losing weight, making more money etc...Its just as you said: Form habits. Thanks again for the great post.

I usually am 1 either passionite about what ever it is or 2 I dont care what anyone thinks. Which is happening more and more as I get older. Otherwise I depend on depends undergarments and try to smile a lot.

A lot of video content is crapola. I especially think these talking head videos are mostly a strip tease for exibitionist nerds.
Though I do think the ones that are well done- an actual story plus production value keep my attention. The only ustream I really enjoy is the one of the bird feeder. I could do without watching Chris Pirillo eating corn flakes.

I do think if you don't have passion you basically can loose an audience quickly. Practicing till you know it up and down is the key. Play off the audience. Feel the pulse. If it isn't there infuse that passionate to tachycardia levels.

Think about maybe a big entrance: pyro? opening video (like zefrank) maybe some corporate theater, skit, dancing girls?

You are a snob. But I enjoyed seeing you again at he Podcast Expo. Getting a nice fat slice of Brogan is on everyone’s Xmas list. I think you should maybe worry about some other Broganisms besides dividing up your time in a conference setting. I noticed you take your pants off during conference sessions. FYI to anyone who wanting more than a slice of your time, try sitting next to you all day at the podcast academy. Quick Tip: Southern California = Corduroy jacket staying in hotel room. It also gets exhausting at your knack for introducing everyone and making everyone feel so fricken comfortable. I am not used to being liked and being introduced as "my friend Mike McAllen" it added intense pressure that I needed to be interesting. I really enjoyed being part of the popular crowd for an instant when you gave me a come hither smile as I walked by in the expo hallway and I was suddenly surrounded by eric rice, cc chapman and several other important "internet people". I was in the cool crowd for an just an instant. Thanks for pulling me in to your world. Life is too short worrying about what people think. Just be a good person, smile and say lets catch up later if you want to move on. Keep it simple. I found a small slice of Brogan was just fine. And I look back on how you deftly broke our last conversation up with. "Jesus you are boring f-ing the crap out of me Mike" it really gave me the subtle picture I needed that I had obviously overextended our allotted Brogan time.

One way on making sure your brand stays centered is Chip Conley's way of designing his hotels - The Phoniex is after rolling stone, the vitale is real simple and Dwell magaizine. Its kind of an innovative way to stay on track. Need ideas- leaf through the magazines.

We decided to see what our company was like. We said Cirque du Soleil & Popular mechanics Mag and Mother Theresa. Though we might have to work on the Mother Theresa part a bit more. We need a Service oriented theme for the last one.

I often wonder how I would deal with a bunch of comments on my blog http://eventsmedia.blogspot.com Luckily I get around 10-20 readers a day so I don't have to worry any time soon about this being a major time issue or life changing experience. But when I do get a comment, it is a small thrill at that the realization someone is actually reading my dribbles.
As for commenting on other blogs, I like joining the conversation but I don't like when their are too many comments. I also have this issue in face to face meetings. I like 2-5 people in a face to face meeting. Any more than that I loose track and it is info overload. This is probably my birth defect affliction of a gnat sized attention span. Wait, I saw something shiny I must go investigate....thanks for another great post Chris.

fantastic post. Since I have have cut back on my twitter, facebook and email(set times to check) I am way more productive, I have stronger erections, and I sleep much better. Side effects have been a stronger marriage, larger bank account and more time for the important things like drinking.

Time managment and saying no is something they don't teach you. The most successful people I know all excel at this.

I had a great time at the Podcamp in San Francisco a few years back and I always wondered why they didn't do it again. (or did they and I just missed it?) Podcamps are a very cool idea letting everyone speak, but I think it has taken out the community punch of the New Media Expo or Portable Media Expo which is too bad. I like the central one big meeting a year, but that is my beef. You and Chris Penn are way smarter than me so I look forward to any Podcamp in the Bay Area. I would put one together but I need to produce paid events. If it weren't for that damn mortgage that I have to pay! :)

Thanks for taking my question(s). And thanks John for clearing up our URL situation. I do agree that our URL should be GrassShackEvents&Media.com Problem we had, is ampersands are not allowed, so it kind of put a wrench in our plans. Plus as you said John it is a real mouthful.
The real reason we used GrassShackRoad is we come from slick big production companies and we were tired of the same old slickster stuff which was directed at the executives. We decided to put a story around our website and go after our real target audience, the ones who actually hire and pay us, the companies in-house meeting planner. Who, by the way are 85% women. Every one of them has said how much they love our website. So after six years in business (celebrated last week) we are kind of stuck with the GS road.
FYI Chris I am wearing my Grass Shack T-shirt today (Saturday)
I have been drinking the marketing over coffee kool-aide and my questions to you guys really relate to a podcast I started with two guys who have 20+ plus years in our industry. We are all enjoying recording the podcast but it has been up to me to build the website- record, edit and now market the effort. Also, a blog I am producing for a Hilton hotel in San Jose. (with Michele Wolverton doing the hard work building the foundation) So thank you for answering my sometimes 101 class questions.

Question- My interviews from my iriver or the phone hosting company I use give me a mp3 when I download them. then I insert them into garageband. When I did this little levalator hack trick I did not work. I think it maybe when I send it to itunes it seems to spit out an ACC not a AIFF file which wont work with the levalator. I think it may be those pesky mp3 files.

Or am I just another failed stat from a california public school system?

Hey Paul-
I have been podcasting for a few years now. I mostly do non-profits and some to build up to an event. I have a production company where I make my money. I would be interested in what people charge for producing podcasts these days..... Any resources you could forward me?
