in Hillary " Tonya Harding" Clinton on Wright - ‘ He would not have been my pastor.’ on Jack and Jill Politics
a lot of white folks wouldn't like the UCC whatever the Rev. Jeremiah Wright said or didn't say.

It's kind of funny to me that one of the few white conservatives to speak up for Wright was.... Mike Huckabee.

I strongly disagree with Huck on *many* topics. Does that mean I have to denounce and reject him?

I saw another conservative (some blog somewhere) make the point that for all of the charges laid on Wright for being this, that, and the other thing, Wright hasn't rejected Obama for offering what seems to be a clear alternative to the MSM meme on Wright.

I won't claim to have any insight on Wright or the Black Church in America.

I extrapolate as best I can on the principal that we are saved by God's grace alone.

in Hillary "Tonya Harding" Clinton Big Dollar Donors Threaten Pelosi & DCCC on Jack and Jill Politics
bottom up was what I saw in Obama back in Iowa last summer.

Isn't that what a Democrat should be?

And people (the MSM actually) say there is no difference in their politics.

Thanks heavens for the revolution at the DNC a couple of years ago or this would have been wired top down for Hilary.

This money threat is the counter-revolution.

What I plan to tell fund raisers these days is... I'm holding on to my money till the super D's sort this out.

in An Important Reminder Of Why I Support Obama - Empowerment on Jack and Jill Politics
thanks for the post reminding us that there are practical earth bound reasons a person might prefer Obama to Clinton.

There are actual differences and health care is one of them. Out here in California the SEIU endorsed him after their experience with Arnold's mandated health care.

And maybe with Mark Penn in charge of her campaign, other union people and lots of people that aren't in unions should be wondering about what her health mandates will mean to them.

What if the top two candidates were both the same race, the same gender, had the same amount of experience? For the sake of argument throw in that they are equals in debate and oratory.

One built a brand new grass roots organization from the bottom up. The other tried to work the establishment levers.

One has organized in all the states, including little ones the party has blown off for years. One concentrated on a few big states and pitted party constituencies against each other while looking for a knockout.

One talked about us and we and you. The other talked about I.

One wants to create a new majority that can create solutions and have the power to defeat entrenched interests. One will settle for 50 + 1 and impose expert solutions from the top down that are going to remind everyone of No Child Left Behind and the drug benefit because the top down solutions are guaranteed to suit the entrenched interests.

The media don't understand the difference. Everyone that supports Obama is a young dreamer, in search of a celebrity fix, or something.

I do know a few conservatives that are absolutely ga ga over Obama changing the world and life as we know it. I think that is a lot to ask for.

Obama's role in African American life and history is something I don't feel qualified to comment on. I do follow the discussion with curiosity.

I'm just happy to have a Democratic candidate with a sense of humor, some brains, and some speaking skills.

Obama has just been my favorite Democratic candidate in thirty years or so and I'm glad I got to vote for him at least once.

I didn't think he would make it to California. I'm starting to get optimistic that I can hope he has a real shot. His type don't come along very often, so I'm going to enjoy this as long as I can.

-- Obama-Clinton ticket, or vice-versa. I really don't see his wife being interested in that at all. I'ld be really surprised if he was -- at the very least out of deference to his wife and her career and goals.

I'ld be really disappointed if Obama took the second spot. I wasn't going to vote for the royal family anyway. And that was before all that we have seen since Iowa. So he isn't going to help Billary get my vote.

And if he goes down in flames with her versus McCain I doubt he would get a second look in 2012. The party just doesn't reward losers very often.

in A Bilingual Blogospheric Obama Endorsement on Jack and Jill Politics
La Opinion, the largest Spanish language daily in the country has endorsed Obama.

[quote]Yet, this is a historic moment and tremendous skills and experience are not enough to inspire a feeling of renewal in our country after eight long years of George W. Bush.

As well, we were disappointed with her calculated opposition to driver’s licenses for the undocumented,[end quote]

maybe they didn't have time to go into all of her other calculations like the Iraq vote and the race card, etc.

in Caroline Kennedy Endorses Barack Obama on Jack and Jill Politics
I'm a fifty-oner that has been for Obama all along. I am hoping that this will be big with all the older boomers that have been hanging on to the cynical Clinton establishment -- in many cases stubbornly ignoring what their heart and head is telling them.

in Satire Or Stereotype? on Jack and Jill Politics
Arianna Huffington is the publisher of the 236 site. So that explains the promotional effort at huffpo.

Satire ain't easy. And it isn't always all that funny.

None of the other pieces on that web page rang irony, parody, or sarcasm bells for me. And I'm old enough to remember who Bobby Fisher was. Maybe it's the writer's strike.

Maybe I'm just sour after catching up on the Clinton shenanigans in Nevada.

in Hillary Clinton on Meet the Press — Aftermath and Impressions on Jack and Jill Politics
from what I read about Bob Johnson, I wonder what he's doing hanging out with a supposed liberal, and what the supposed liberal is doing hanging out with Bob Johnson.

But then, this is the campaign that hired Mark Penn, CEO of Burson-Marsteller.

I wasn't ever going to vote for Clinton. It's just getting too much like royalty to have it all in the family all of the time. She sure is making it easier not to vote for her.

I'll vote green or take a hard look at Bloomberg. My bet is he jumps in if Clinton gets the nomination. Way out here on the left coast I don't know much about the mayor of New York City.

in A Note on Your Comments and Emails on Jack and Jill Politics
thanks for the welcome.

I am here for the Obama coverage. I found the place through a link from Andrew Sullivan's site -- I think. I've become a google nut for Obama news, like it will help him get elected.... I wish.

I have been excited about Obama since the Convention speech.

I saw him in front of a small crowd in a small town in Iowa last summer and was pleased to discover that he really is one of those extremely rare politicians.

Damn smart.

Loose as ashes.

Great self-deprecating sense of humor.

And a hint of steel and confidence just out of sight. He doesn't have to flash it because he knows who he is and where he is and why he is. That's why he can be friendly with people he disagrees with. And he's probably one of those guys you wouldn't want mad at you.

I read this description at Mark Kleimans blog (another blog discovery):

[snip]

Better yet, as far as I can tell from listening to his speeches and "reading" The Audacity of Hope as an audiobook, Obama is almost devoid of the megalomaniac and sociopathic tendencies so common among top-level politicians.

The Greek word sophrosyne is usually translated as "temperance" or "moderation." But its core meaning seems to be closer to "self-command" or "sanity." That's the characteristic that shines through the speeches and actions of Abraham Lincoln. It's on Obama's sophrosyne, even more than on his intelligence, that I'm prepared to bet.

[snip]

me again....

Some of his critics say he wouldn't be where he is if he were a woman or a white man. That's just crazy. His personal qualities would look good on anyone, even a Republican. Romney would sell his soul for an ounce of what Obama has.

Will he change the world? That's a tall order. I'll take a decent, honest, competent, liberal politician and see where we can go from there.

For your demographic curiosity... 51 year old white guy here. Married, two kids under 15, house, dog, middle-class. Not much time to volunteer on the campaign, but definitely spreading the word to family, friends, and co-workers.

Thanks for the Obama coverage. And I'll read up on the other stuff while I'm here.

in Oreos And House Negroes: The Clinton Strategy Explained on Jack and Jill Politics
thanks for your analysis.

I think it's the Rove card.

Hit your opponent on all of his strong points. The war, youth, inspirational brilliance, and if you believe the meme that white folks only support him because we feel guilty or need imaginary Black friends, then you hit him there too somehow.

Your analysis filled in the rest of the picture about how this was supposed to play out with Black folks vis a vis white folks vis a vis Black folks. That's the evil genius of the Rove card, because now we're going in circles.

I don't know if it's possible to play the Rove card against a Black candidate without sounding bigoted, condescending, ignorant, and/or insensitive, but what kind of decent person wants to try?

I see no reason to cut her any slack at all. They didn't have to go there.

It's very sad about the young Cuomo. Obama is the most inspirational Democrat since Mario Cuomo. And Obama has the guts to put it on the line for us. But it was always going to be Up Hil against the Clinton machine.

in Scott Hetherington is going home from the hospital on Roanoke Fire Blog
Hey guys, I would like to say thanks to all of you who came by my room to say hi. It really kept my spirits up to see all of y'all. On Nov. 30 the members of this dept. showed the whole world how it's really done. Due to super fast recognition, action and co-operation I am here today with a great outlook and plans to return asap. everyone from my captain, to firefighters, to medics, to chiefs and supervisors pitched in. Aside from having "shaken baby syndrome" I am doing great. Rhett the picture isn't that great but its very appropriate because it was taken at Reighley's house. Just one brother helping out another. Anyway thanks to all for your prayers and well wishes Scooter
