I don't believe this is a "new" feature. I've always been able to set my profile to be visible to everyone — I had to set it with a custom setting of "Friends of Friends" or something like that.

I work with two volunteer organizations in town, both worthy of a mention.
The first, Hands on Birmingham is part of the national Hands On Network, matching volunteers with service projects in the community. They do a fantastic job of addressing needs with helpers, supplies and more in a timely fashion.
The second is Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Birmingham. Their mission pairs children with adult role models in the metro area, volunteers who make a lasting impact in young lives.
I love working with both organization, but I encourage anyone out there to jump in with a good cause now. It's fun, it's rewarding, and it's vital to give back to the community.

Wi-fi at City Stages is a joke, since the festival doesn't allow backpacks.

Then again, a lot of things about the festival are pretty funny, like charity auctions with no bids and events on an empty stage.

Let's be honest: There's little overlap between San Diego's superior lineup and Birmingham's pretty good lineup. That City Stages would compare the two is laughable, or merely sad.

I would pay more to see a stronger lineup. But it may not be a question of whether folks here can or would pay more for a killer schedule. Being realistic, it's unlikely we can draw the same acts based on population size and probable attendance. It's the same for touring acts and venues. That's OK.

"We currently do not feel the need to pay more in order to see more here in Birmingham, Alabama." That's simply too broad to defend. I've been to plenty of expensive concerts in town and out of town. Plenty of Birmingham residents will pay top dollar for acts they love, whether at the BJCC or in Atlanta or at Bonnaroo.

Maybe a more accurate statement is: We currently do not feel the need to improve City Stages in order to change its fate.

The question is whether or not people will show their approval by buying or downloading the CD.

Traditionally, Idol-related CDs haven't done too well across the board. The exceptions: Kelly Clarkson (esp. after she established her own style) and Clay Aiken.
