That's what my sales manager told me in a past life. "You'll never get the business if you don't ask."

in Bustup Not Bailout on A VC
Throw them under the bus and start over? Hmmm...that's a thought.

Actually, there are several ways to do that (start over) which don't involve throwing them completely under the bus. A pre-packaged bankruptcy (Ch. 11, not Ch. 7) would allow for necessary restructuring without destroying the company and its supply chain. Your suggestion to sell off the parts, if deemed appropriate, could easily be handled during the bankruptcy.

At any rate, any solution that in any way tries to preserve any semblance of the current status quo should be a non-starter (do you hear that Pelosi/Reid/Frank?). At a minimum, those aspects of the business that currently make the Big 3 uncompetitive must be addressed -- which means some lost jobs, lost benefits, and new management, etc.

Brian I agree. There is no reason to bail these companies out. Assets being sold off to smaller buyers is exactly what would happen in bankruptcy court.

With the Dems support of the UAW, I see the chances of a GM bankruptcy slim to none. The blame for this should be split fairly equally between labor and management.
kip yeah but consumers will not buy a car from a company that is perceived as failing because they will be worried about the long term parts and servicing. GM is leveraged to make it to the release of the Volt and they have bet the farm on it.

What's sad is that that kind of pandering plays so well to such a large crowd.

What? America's broken because a clerk opined that you were too young to be in charge of a start-up?

Sorry, but that is pretty weak. I suppose we should judge all of France by the rude waiter at a tourist trap cafe in Paris?

in Bailed-out Banker Compensation: A PR Disaster in the Making? on Information Arbitrage
In the spirit of the devil's advocate, some questions:

1. How do you define "equitable pay"?

2. Given your definition in #1, why can't I pay whatever I feel is equitable -- whether it agrees with what others feel is equitable or not? In other words, you may feel $X is equitable, but I may feel $5X is equitable. Assuming everything's on the up and up, and I have my choice of firms to do business with, why shouldn't I be able to pay someone $5X if I want to?

"Wachovia whose stock is down 83%. They should downgrade themselves too."

Got you covered. Some dude at Fox-Pitt Kelton Cochran Caronia Waller (FPKCCW?) did that on Monday. Good thing Wacker Drive's finest are on the job, huh?

in Cosmo Kramer had it right: STOP THE MAIL! on andyswan
On a lark, I checked around because, you know, I'd been told certain things by my parents when I was a child and, sure enough, it's against "federal" law to remove your mailbox and/or to provide no mail box at all.

1. Title 18, United States Code, Section 1705: "Whoever willfully or maliciously injures, tears down or destroys any letter box or other receptacle intended or used for the receipt or delivery of mail on any mail route, or breaks open the same or willfully or maliciously injures, defaces or destroys any mail deposited therein, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both."

2. Domestic Mail Manual, Section 508, 2.1.3: "Customer Maintenance of Receptacles - Customers must provide authorized mail receptacles or door slots, except for mail receptacles authorized by the USPS to be owned and maintained by the USPS. The purchase, installation, maintenance, and replacement of mail receptacles used by customers for mail delivery are not the responsibility of the USPS. However, the USPS may authorize neighborhood delivery and collection boxes and parcel lockers to be purchased, installed, maintained, or replaced by the USPS."

Can you believe that? You "own" the mailbox (and MUST provide one), but you basically have NO control over it.

Yikes! This is a can of worms that I suspect will only benefit the lawyers (and perhaps a few public officials with big(ger) aspirations -- then again, maybe not).

There's a term for this kind of "scheme:" fraudulent conveyance. It tends to be illegal.

in Michael Connick actually likes Vista! on Rodfather Mobile
"...then you have the choice of OS."

Unfortunately, my PC's manufacturer doesn't offer Win XP (or Win XP drivers) as a choice for new machines -- and I don't have time to experiment to see if Win XP drivers will work out of the box. That's pretty much the only reason I left Vista on my new laptop rather than "downgrading" it to Win XP when I got it.

in OneNote Daily Journal v1.0.1 on OneNote PowerToys
I initially got a .NET error, too. I don't remember whether or not I had created the sections in the notebook, first.

Now, I don't get the error, but all it does is open up Onenote to whatever page was last open -- even after I have created the sections as described in the other link you posted. It doesn't create a new daily journal page, nor does it take me to today's journal page (or any specified journal page, for that matter).

Any suggestions?

Nice post. You did a great job of putting into words (and pictures) what I had been thinking after having read your post of March 4th regarding the "sweet spot." This is a great example of that sort of analysis applied in the opposite direction.

in Microsoft M&A waking up to RSS? Onfolio acquired on Scobleizer
Don't take this wrong, because I'm a died-in-the-wool Windows user. I'm usually a "glass half full" kind of person, but I'm afraid on this one I'm in a "glass half empty" mood. I hope this doesn't mean "R.I.P." for Onfolio.

Bought by Microsoft and already integrated into Windows Live Toolbar...? That explains why I haven't heard squat from Onfolio in ages. At least, the version I currently have (2.02) seems to work well for me. Hopefully, they'll continue to support this standalone version for a while.
